Background: New-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of stroke in hospitalized patients with severe sepsis. Post-cardiac arrest patients experience conditions similar to sepsis. This study investigated whether pre-arrest AF is associated with poor neurological recovery following in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA).

Purpose: We compared adults with mitral stenosis (MS) to 8 controls (CONT) to see how pulmonary impedance and wave reflections differ at baseline and after balloon valvuloplasty.
Methods: We separated the MS patients into groups according to mean pulmonary artery pressure: moderate (MOD; ≤ 26 mmHg, n = 21) and high (HIGH; > 26 mmHg, n = 33). We made baseline high-fidelity measurements in all patients, in the MS groups after vasodilation with nitroprusside, immediately and 4 months after balloon valvuloplasty.

Aims/introduction: The relationship between economic disadvantages and the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), as well as its impact on birth outcomes, remains uncertain.
Materials And Methods: From the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database, we identified 984,712 pregnant women between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2018. Using propensity score matching, we selected 5,068 pairs of women across four income levels: very low, low, middle and high.

Background: Advanced maternal age is associated with decreased oocyte quantity and quality and in vitro fertilization (IVF) success rates. This study aimed to investigate whether melatonin supplementation can improve IVF outcomes in women of advanced maternal age by modulating cuproptosis and ferroptosis.
Methods: This prospective cohort study included 161 women aged 35-45 years undergoing IVF-frozen embryo transfer cycles.

Background: Several epidemiologic studies have revealed a higher risk of cancer in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) relative to the general population. To investigate whether the use of acarbose was associated with higher/lower risk of new-onset cancers.
Method: We conducted a retrospective cohort study, using a population-based National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan.

: In this investigation, we aimed to understand the influence of oral probiotic supplementation on the vaginal microbiota of women preparing for assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures. Given the importance of a healthy microbiome for reproductive success, this study sought to explore how probiotics might alter the bacterial composition in the vaginal environment. : We recruited a cohort of 30 women, averaging 37 years of age (ranging from 31 to 43 years), who were scheduled to undergo ART.

Background: Ovarian aging is characterized by the accumulation of free radicals, leading to tissue damage and affecting reproductive health. Intravascular laser irradiation of blood (ILIB, using a low-energy He-Ne laser) is known for its efficacy in treating vascular-related diseases by reducing free radicals and inflammation. However, its impact on ovarian aging remains unexplored.

As women age, oocytes are susceptible to a myriad of dysfunctions, including mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired DNA repair mechanisms, epigenetic alterations, and metabolic disturbances, culminating in reduced fertility rates among older individuals. Ferredoxin (FDX) represents a highly conserved iron-sulfur (Fe-S) protein essential for electron transport across multiple metabolic pathways. Mammalian mitochondria house two distinct ferredoxins, FDX1 and FDX2, which share structural similarities and yet perform unique functions.

Background: The 2022 AHA/ACC/HFSA guidelines for the management of heart failure (HF) makes therapeutic recommendations based on HF status. We investigated whether the prognosis of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) could be stratified by HF stage and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
Methods: This single-center retrospective study analyzed the data of patients who experienced IHCA between 2005 and 2020.

Secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1), also known as osteopontin (OPN), is located on chromosome 4q22.1. This multifunctional secreted acidic glycoprotein is expressed intracellularly and extracellularly in various tissues, where it interacts with regulatory proteins and pro-inflammatory immune chemokines, contributing to the pathogenesis of multiple diseases.

Copper (Cu) plays a crucial and diverse function in biological systems, acting as a cofactor at numerous sites of enzymatic activity and participating in various physiological processes, including oxidative stress regulation, lipid metabolism, and energy metabolism. Similar to other micronutrients, the body regulates Cu levels to ensure homeostasis; any disruption in Cu homeostasis may result in various illnesses. Cuproptosis causes proteotoxic stress and ultimately results in cell death by the binding of Cu ions to lipid-acylated proteins during the tricarboxylic acid cycle of mitochondrial respiration.

Ferroptosis, a recently discovered form of cell death, has been implicated in various diseases. However, the genetic relationship between ferroptosis and ovarian aging has not been thoroughly investigated through informatics analysis. In this study, we conducted bioinformatics analysis using ovarian aging and ferroptosis datasets to identify potential ferroptosis-related genes using R software.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the 'jailed semi-inflated balloon technique' (JSIBT) for side branch (SB) protection in STEMI patients with a culprit lesion involving a coronary artery bifurcation while undergoing emergent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods: We treated between Jan, 2011 and Jun, 2020, a total of 264 STEMI patients with a culprit lesion that involved a coronary artery bifurcation using primary PCI. In 30 patients, SB was protected by JSIBT (the JSIBT group).

With advancing age, women experience irreversible deterioration in the quality of their oocytes, resulting in reduced fertility. To gain a deeper understanding of the influence of ferroptosis-related genes on ovarian aging, we employed a comprehensive approach encompassing spatial transcriptomics, single-cell RNA sequencing, human ovarian pathology, and clinical biopsy. This investigation revealed the intricate interactions between ferroptosis and cellular energy metabolism in aging germ cells, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms.

The decline in oocyte quality with age is an irreversible process that results in low fertility. Reproductive aging causes an increase in oocyte aneuploidy leading to a decrease in embryo quality and an increase in the incidence of miscarriage and congenital defects. Here, we show that the dysfunction associated with aging is not limited to the oocyte, as oocyte granulosa cells also show a range of defects related to mitochondrial activity.

Objective: Hereditary amyloid transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis with polyneuropathy, a rare autosomal-dominant disease, has gained attention in recent years owing to treatment improvements. However, epidemiological real-world mega database of nationwide natural history and survival rates, especially with the specific mutation of Ala97Ser, are limited.
Methods: Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database contains data from over 23 million individuals; Among them, 175 ATTRv amyloidosis patients validated by rare disease registry were enrolled.

Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have linked RRBP1 (ribosomal-binding protein 1) genetic variants to atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and serum lipoprotein levels. However, how RRBP1 regulates blood pressure is unknown.
Methods: To identify genetic variants associated with blood pressure, we performed a genome-wide linkage analysis with regional fine mapping in the Stanford Asia-Pacific Program for Hypertension and Insulin Resistance (SAPPHIRe) cohort.

Darolutamide, a second-generation androgen receptor inhibitor (SGARI), has been shown to increase metastasis-free survival and overall survival among men with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC). Its unique chemical structure potentially provides efficacy and safety advantages over the SGARIs apalutamide and enzalutamide, which are also indicated for nmCRPC. Despite a lack of direct comparisons, the SGARIs appear to have similar efficacy, safety, and quality of life (QoL) results.
