Aim: There remain limited therapies to treat thyroid eye disease (TED) orbital fibrosis, highlighting the urgency to develop novel targets. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)-induced myofibroblast transdifferentiation from orbital fibroblasts are important pathogenetic factor of TED. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress may play a role in TED pathogenesis since it has been linked to liver, kidney, heart and lung fibrotic remodelling.

Background: Adolescence represents a pivotal period for the initiation of smoking behaviours. While family, peer and social groups serve as significant reference groups influencing adolescents' decision-making process, there remains a paucity of research that examines how diversified reference groups influence their smoking decisions.

Objective: The objective is to compare normative and informative influences given by different reference groups on adolescents' smoking decision-making.

Biomedical Imaging and Radiological Sciences, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University - Yangming Campus, B306, Experimental Building, No. 155, Sec. 2, Linong St. Beitou Dist., Taipei, 112304, TAIWAN.

Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is widely used in dental imaging, small animal imaging, radiotherapy, and non-destructive industrial inspection. The quality of CBCT images depends on the precise knowledge of the CBCT system's alignment. We introduce a distinct procedure, "precision alignment loop (PAL)", to calibrate any CBCT system with a circular trajectory.

Background: Infarct growth on multimodal imaging is a common lead outcome in phase 2 proof-of-concept and dose-optimization neuroprotective agent stroke trials. However, the effect size in infarct growth reduction that correlates with clinically meaningful differences in clinical global disability outcomes has not been well delineated.

Methods: A systematic literature search identified all endovascular thrombectomy randomized trials reporting magnitude of treatment effect on both infarct growth reduction and increase in functional independence (modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 0-2).

Investigation of Trehalose Supplementation Impacting and from Broiler Farming.

Vet Sci

July 2023

Zoonoses Research Center and School of Veterinary Medicine, National Taiwan University, No. 1, Sec. 4, Roosevelt Rd., Taipei City 106, Taiwan.

Article Synopsis
  • The European Commission prohibited antibiotic promoters in animal feed in 2006, leading to a need for alternative feed additives to combat poultry diseases previously managed with antibiotics.
  • This study explored the effects of trehalose on broiler growth performance and pathogenic bacteria levels when added to their feed.
  • Results showed that trehalose up to 10% didn't negatively impact weight gain or feed efficiency but increased beneficial bacteria levels while not significantly decreasing harmful bacteria counts in the guts of broilers.

We found that GroEL in Porphyromonas gingivalis accelerated tumor growth and increased mortality in tumor-bearing mice; GroEL promoted proangiogenic function, which may be the reason for promoting tumor growth. To understand the regulatory mechanisms by which GroEL increases the proangiogenic function of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), we explored in this study. In EPCs, MTT assay, wound-healing assay, and tube formation assay were performed to analyze its activity.

The fomite transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has drawn attention because of its highly contagious nature. Therefore, surfaces that can prevent coronavirus contamination are an urgent and unmet need during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Conventional surfaces are usually based on superhydrophobic or antiviral coatings.

Introduction: This study aims to develop and validate an integrative intrinsic capacity (IC) scoring system, to investigate its associations with a wide spectrum of biomarkers and to explore the predictive value of the integrative IC score on 4-year mortality among community dwelling people aged 50 years and older.

Methods: We included 839 adults aged ≥50 years from the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study (SEBAS) and randomly divided them into derivation and validation cohorts to develop the IC scoring system. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to weight each subdomain (locomotion, sensory, vitality, psychological, and cognition) of IC according to its association with impairments in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and to construct the integrative IC score.

In this era of unprecedented longevity, healthy aging is an important public health priority. Avoiding or shortening the period of disability or dementia before death is critical to achieving the defining objectives of healthy aging, namely to develop and maintain functional capabilities that enable wellbeing in older age. The first step is to identify people who are at risk and then to implement effective primary interventions.

Aging is a dynamic complex process involving social vulnerability over time. The social vulnerability index (SVI) was developed that predicted adverse health outcomes. This study examined effects between SVI status and two genotypes, apolipoprotein E (ApoE) and Serotonin transporter genotyping (5-HTTLPR), on all-cause mortality.
