There are multiple spp. (Myxozoa: Myxobolidae) endemic to North American catfish aquaculture that affect the gills of channel catfish and their hybrids. These parasites are morphologically similar, and confusion exists regarding the predilection sites and pathologic changes associated with different species.

Aeromonas veronii is a gram-negative species abundant in aquatic environments that causes disease in humans as well as terrestrial and aquatic animals. In the current study, 41 publicly available A. veronii genomes were compared to investigate distribution of putative virulence genes, global dissemination of pathotypes, and potential mechanisms of virulence.

Henneguya ictaluri is the etiologic agent of proliferative gill disease (PGD) in farm-raised Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus and hybrid catfish in the southeastern United States, and significant annual losses are attributed to this disease. Research suggests that H. ictaluri infection dynamics in Blue Catfish I.

Henneguya adiposa is one of ten known, closely related myxozoan species that parasitize a variety of tissue sites in the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. Reported to specifically target the adipose fin, H. adiposa is not associated with morbidity or mortality, although detailed descriptions of its associated histologic pathology are lacking.

are Gram-negative, non-spore forming rods belonging to the family within the class . These facultative anaerobic bacteria are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and have a broad host range. We present here the complete genome sequence of multidrug-resistant strain MS-18-37 isolated from diseased catfish.

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone which is an endocrine signaling molecule in all vertebrates and acts through intracellular glucocorticoid receptors (GRs). Cortisol affects many biological functions including immunity, stress, growth, and reproduction. The objective of this study was to investigate the ontogeny of the cortisol and GR stress response in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) at several early life stages.

A novel third channel catfish growth hormone secretagogue (ghrelin) receptor, GHS-R3a, gene was characterized. Identification and analysis of the genomic organization of channel catfish GHS-R3a revealed differences in exon/intron structure relative to the previously published GHS-R1a and GHS-R2a sequences. Amino acid sequence alignment of catfish GHS-R3a with -R1a and -R2a revealed 48 and 52% sequence identity, respectively.

Columnaris disease, caused by the Gram-negative bacterium , is one of the most prevalent fish diseases worldwide. An exceptionally high level of genetic diversity among isolates of has long been recognized, whereby six established genomovars have been described to date. However, little has been done to quantify or characterize this diversity further in a systematic fashion.

Two channel catfish glucocorticoid receptor genes, ipGR1 (NR3C1_1) and ipGR2 (NR3C1_2) were partially characterized. Identification and analysis of the genomic organization of two channel catfish glucocorticoid (GC) receptors (GRs) revealed differences in the lengths of exons 1 and 2 and the addition of an extra 27-bp exon inserted after exon 2 in the GR1 gene, yielding a 9-aa insert in the receptor protein. Sequence of the 9-aa insert in ipGR1 (WRARQNTHG) is unique compared to other teleost fish GRs.

Lineages of hypervirulent (vAh) are the cause of persistent outbreaks of motile septicemia in warm-water fishes worldwide. Over the last decade, this virulent lineage of has resulted in annual losses of millions of tons of farmed carp and catfish in the People's Republic of China and the United States (US). Multiple lines of evidence indicate US catfish and Asian carp isolates of affiliated with sequence type 251 (ST251) share a recent common ancestor.

In the southeastern USA, catfish aquaculture is burdened by predation from piscivorous birds and the digenetic trematodes they carry. In addition to cultured ictalurid fish, other forage or incidental fish species inhabit catfish production ponds. Of these, the inland silverside Menidia beryllina was recently found to harbor larval metacercariae of several trematode species.

Mycotoxin contamination of agricultural commodities poses a serious risk to animal health, including aquaculture species. Ochratoxin A (OA) is the most immunotoxic ochratoxin, yet little is known about its effect on immune function in fish. Antimicrobial polypeptides (AMPPs) are one of the most potent, innate, host defense factors, yet very little is known about what types of chronic stressors affect their expression.
