The release in aquatic environments of emergent contaminants such as copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) has generated concerns on their short- and long-term toxicity and the potential risk for more vulnerable animal groups, such as amphibians. In this sense, the aim of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of CuO-NPs in comparison with its respective salt (CuCl) in embryos and larvae of a native amphibian, Rhinella arenarum, by acute (96 h) and chronic (504 h) standardized bioassays. Lethality and sublethal effects such as developmental, morphological, and ethological alterations were assessed in a wide range of concentrations (0.

Disease-specific changes in tumors and other diseased tissues are an important target of research because they provide clues on the pathophysiology of the disease as well as uncovering potentially useful markers for diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report a new cyclic peptide, CESPLLSEC (CES), that specifically accumulated (homed) in intracranial U87MG and the WT-GBM model of glioblastoma from intravenous (IV) injection, associating with the vasculature. Affinity chromatography of U87MG tumor extracts on insolubilized CES peptide identified Synaptosomal Associated Protein 25 (SNAP25) as a candidate target molecule (receptor) for CES.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects over 6 million people, mainly in Latin America. Two different clinical phases, acute and chronic, are recognised. Currently, 2 anti-parasitic drugs are available to treat the disease (nifurtimox and benznidazole), but diagnostic methods require of a relatively complex infrastructure and trained personnel, limiting its widespread use in endemic areas, and the access of patients to treatment.

The current pandemic produced by SARS-CoV-2 and its variants represent an example of the one health concept in which humans and animals are components of the same epidemiologic chain. Animal reservoirs of these viruses are thus the focus of surveillance programs, to monitor their circulation and evolution in potentially new hosts and reservoirs. In this work, we report the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 Gamma variant infection in four specimens of Chaetophractus villosus (big hairy armadillo/armadillo peludo) in Argentina.

Background: One of the characteristics of parkinsonian tremor is that its amplitude decreases with movement. Current models suggest an interaction between basal ganglia (BG) and cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuits in parkinsonian tremor pathophysiology.
Objective: We aimed to correlate central oscillation in the BG with electromyographic activity during re-emergent tremor in order to detect changes in BG oscillatory activity when tremor is attenuated by movement.

The water oxidation reaction is a rate-determining step in solar water splitting. The number of surviving photoexcited holes is one of the most influencing factors affecting the photoelectrochemical water oxidation efficiency of photocatalysts. The solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of BaTaON is still far below the benchmark efficiency set for practical applications, notwithstanding its potential as a 600 nm-class photocatalyst in solar water splitting.

In the mammalian cortex, even simple sensory inputs or movements activate many neurons, with each neuron responding variably to repeated stimuli-a phenomenon known as trial-by-trial variability. Understanding the spatial patterns and dynamics of this variability is challenging. Using cellular 2-photon imaging, we study visual and auditory responses in the primary cortices of awake mice.

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array.

Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections can cause from bloody diarrhea to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. The STEC intestinal infection triggers an inflammatory response that can facilitate the development of a systemic disease. We report here that neutrophils might contribute to this inflammatory response by secreting Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β).

The TGF signaling pathway is a key regulator of cancer progression. In this work, we report for the first time the antitumor activity of TβRII-SE/Fc, a novel peptibody whose targeting domain is comprised of the soluble endogenous isoform of the human TGF-β type II receptor (TβRII-SE). Overexpression of TβRIISE/Fc reduces in vitro cell proliferation and migration while inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human colorectal cancer-derived cell lines.

Barium tantalum oxynitride (BaTaO N), as a member of an emerging class of perovskite oxynitrides, is regarded as a promising inorganic material for solar water splitting because of its small band gap, visible light absorption, and suitable band edge potentials for overall water splitting in the absence of an external bias. However, BaTaO N still exhibits poor water-splitting performance that is susceptible to its synthetic history, surface states, recombination process, and instability. This review provides a comprehensive summary of previous progress, current advances, existing challenges, and future perspectives of BaTaO N for solar water splitting.

Introduction: The search for the "neural code" has been a fundamental quest in neuroscience, concerned with the way neurons and neuronal systems process and transmit information. However, the term "code" has been mostly used as a metaphor, seldom acknowledging the formal definitions introduced by information theory, and the contributions of linguistics and semiotics not at all. The heuristic potential of the latter was suggested by structuralism, which turned the methods and findings of linguistics to other fields of knowledge.

Localized surface plasmons are lossy and generate heat. However, accurate measurement of the temperature of metallic nanoparticles under illumination remains an open challenge, creating difficulties in the interpretation of results across plasmonic applications. Particularly, there is a quest for understanding the role of temperature in plasmon-assisted catalysis.

Neurons in the cerebral cortex fire coincident action potentials during ongoing activity and in response to sensory inputs. These synchronized cell assemblies are fundamental to cortex function, yet basic dynamical aspects of their size and duration are largely unknown. Using 2-photon imaging of neurons in the superficial cortex of awake mice, we show that synchronized cell assemblies organize as scale-invariant avalanches that quadratically grow with duration.

Unlabelled: Although many studies have explored the depletion of tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) as a therapeutic strategy for solid tumors, currently available compounds suffer from poor efficacy and dose-limiting side effects. Here, we developed a novel TAM-depleting agent ("OximUNO") that specifically targets CD206 TAMs and demonstrated efficacy in a triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) mouse model. OximUNO comprises a star-shaped polyglutamate (St-PGA) decorated with the CD206-targeting peptide mUNO that carries the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX).

Instantons, which are nonperturbative solutions to Yang-Mills equations, provide a signal for the occurrence of quantum tunneling between distinct classes of vacua. They can give rise to decays of particles otherwise forbidden. Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, we search for signatures of such instanton-induced processes that would be suggestive of super-heavy particles decaying in the Galactic halo.
