Stress, a Brief Update.

Int J Psychol Res (Medellin)

October 2023

Neuropsychopharmacology Lab. Psychobiology and Neurosciences Department. Sistema de Universidad Abierta y a Distancia (SUAyD), Psychology School, National University of Mexico (UNAM) , México. Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México National University of Mexico Mexico.

Stress is fundamental for health and adaptation; it is an evolutionarily conserved response that involves several systems in the organism. The study of the stress response could be traced back to the end of the nineteenth century with George Beard's or Claude Bernard's work and, from that moment on, several studies that have allowed the elucidation of its neurobiology and the consequences of suffering from it were consolidated. In this theoretical review, we discuss the most relevant researches to our knowledge on the study of stress response, from the concept of stress, its neurobiology, the hormonal response during stress, as well as its regulation, the effects of acute and chronic stress, stress from cognition, the different stress responses during life, as well as its relationship with different psychiatric disorders.

The contribution of small farms to the global food supply is in debate due to lack of empirical evidence. In Mexico, small farms have been relatively important for national food supply due to an agrarian reform in the first half of the 20th century, but their role has been decreasing in the last decades. The aim of this study is to quantify how much small farms produce of the Mexican agricultural supply, and with which farming practices, using the 2019 National Agricultural Survey.

Cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) is a ubiquitous enzymatic complex that is involved in a broad spectrum of intracellular receptor signaling. The activity of PKA depends on A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) that attach to PKAs close to their substrates to control signaling. Although the relevance of PKA-AKAP signaling in the immune system is evident in T cells, its relevance in B and other immune cells remains relatively unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • The non-ciliated bronchiolar cell (NCBC) in the lungs defends against harmful substances and increases mucin and CC16 protein production in response to exposure to toxins.
  • A study explored how male and female CD-1 mice reacted differently to inhaling vanadium (V) over four weeks, finding that both sexes experienced hyperplasia and NCBC sloughing but had varying levels of mucosecretory metaplasia.
  • Results showed increased expression of CC16 in both genders, but male mice exhibited more severe changes, indicating significant differences in susceptibility to toxic inhalants based on sex.
