Does cognitive inhibition contribute to working memory and reasoning during childhood?

Psychol Res

December 2024

Institute of Basic and Applied Psychology, and Technology (IPSIBAT), National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP), Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Theoretical frameworks suggest that cognitive inhibition suppresses irrelevant information in working memory, preventing overload and promoting the processing of task-relevant information. Consequently, it may also contribute to more complex skills, such as abstract reasoning, by facilitating the retention and processing of patterns and relationships. However, empirical evidence does not consistently show these relationships in early elementary school years.

Multiresponsive Nanogels for the Selective Delivery of Antimicrobial Drugs to Mucosal Tissues.

Biomacromolecules

September 2024

POLYMAT, Applied Chemistry Department, Faculty of Chemistry, University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Paseo Manuel de Lardizabal 3, Donostia-San Sebastián 20018, Spain.

Effective drug delivery to bacterially infected mucosa remains a challenge due to the combined obstacles of the mucosal barrier, pH variations, and high concentrations of glutathione. However, polysaccharide-based responsive nanogels (NGs) can take advantage of these conditions to deliver specific antimicrobials. We explored the critical features of pH- and redox-responsive NGs to increase drug penetration, residence time, and efficacy in the infected mucosa.

Laboratory of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Contamination, Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FCEyN), National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP), Institute of Marine and Coastal Research (IIMyC), National Scientific and Technological Research Council (CONICET), Funes 3350, 7600, Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Argentina is a leading honey producer and honey bees are also critical for pollination services and wild plants. At the same time, it is a major crop producer with significant use of insecticides, posing risks to bees. Therefore, the presence of the highly toxic insecticide chlorpyrifos, and forbidden contaminants (organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) was investigated in honey bee, beebread, wax and honey samples in apiaries from three contrasting regions of Argentina.

Analytical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Sciences-IVAGRO, University of Cadiz, Agrifood Campus of International Excellence (CeiA3), Polígono Río San Pedro, s/n, Puerto Real 11510, Cadiz, Spain. Electronic address:

In this work, for the first time, a stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) coupled with thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) was developed and validated for the determination of seven phthalates in Peruvian pisco. The phthalate compounds considered were dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) hexahydrophthalate (BEHP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP). The best overall analytical conditions obtained from the optimization were as follow: extraction time of 120 min, size of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) twister (20 mm length x 1 mm thickness), NaCl content (20 %) and sample volume (40 mL).

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) developed by microorganisms is considered one of the most critical public health issues worldwide. This problem is affecting the lives of millions of people and needs to be addressed promptly. Mainly, antibiotics are the substances that contribute to AMR in various strains of bacteria and other microorganisms, leading to infectious diseases that cannot be effectively treated.

Electronic address:

Neosporosis, caused by the protozoan Neospora caninum, was first diagnosed in Argentinean cattle in the 90's. With a national bovine stock of approximately 53 million head, the cattle industry is socially and economically relevant. Severe economic losses have been estimated at US$ 33 and 12 million annually in dairy and beef cattle, respectively.

Organic chemical reactions have been used to functionalize preformed conducting polymers (CPs). The extensive work performed on polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), and polythiophene (PT) is described together with the more limited work on other CPs. Two approaches have been taken for the functionalization: (i) direct reactions on the CP chains and (ii) reaction with substituted CPs bearing reactive groups (e.

This study reports the synthesis of hybrid nanostructures composed of cerium dioxide and microcrystalline cellulose prepared by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal route under distinct temperature and pH values. Their structural, morphological and spectroscopic behaviors were investigated by X-Rays Diffraction, Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopy, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Fourier-Transform Infrared, Ultraviolet-Visible, Raman and Positron Annihilation Lifetime spectroscopies to evaluate the presence of structural defects and their correlation with the underlying mechanism regarding the biocide activity of the studied material. The samples showed mean crystallite sizes around 10 nm, characterizing the formation of quantum dots unevenly distributed along the cellulose surface with a certain agglomeration degree.

The Association Between Early Drinking and Dependence Varies by Drinking Context.

Front Behav Neurosci

March 2020

Institute of Basic, Applied Psychology and Technology (IPSIBAT), National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP), Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Evidence regarding the association between early drinking (ED) and later dependence is controversial. It has been alternately hypothesized that ED either plays a causal role in the development of dependence or that it is an early marker of increased psychosocial vulnerabilities. Despite a clear rationale for delaying youth consumption, it is important to discern this relationship.

A method for the synthesis of a linear block copolymer (PNIPAM--PANI), containing a thermoresponsive block (poly(-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM) and a Near Infrared (NIR) light-absorbing block (polyaniline, PANI), is reported. The synthetic approach involves a two-step successive polymerization reaction. First, the radical polymerization of NIPAM is done using 4-aminothiophenol as a chain transfer agent for the obtention of thermosensitive block terminated with an aniline (ANI) moiety.

Cognitive functioning: is it all or none?

Psychol Res

September 2019

National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), Institute of Applied and Basic Psychology and Technology (IPSIBAT), National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP), Viamonte 3845, 7600, Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Under various circumstances, the cognitive system operates in a global manner that is not very precise and barely discriminatory. This form of operating has been described via a general principal that Diamond (Developmental Psychology 45:130-138, 2009) has denominated the All or None Hypothesis. This author has described a set of corollaries derived from this hypothesis that make it possible to verify it in each one of these domains.

Depth-profiling by confocal Raman microscopy (CRM): data correction by numerical techniques.

Appl Spectrosc

March 2011

Institute of Materials Science and Technology (INTEMA), National Research Council (CONICET), National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP), Juan B. Justo 4302, (7600) Mar del Plata, Argentina.

The data obtained in confocal Raman microscopy (CRM) depth profiling experiments with dry optics are subjected to significant distortions, including an artificial compression of the depth scale, due to the combined influence of diffraction, refraction, and instrumental effects that operate on the measurement. This work explores the use of (1) regularized deconvolution and (2) the application of simple rescaling of the depth scale as methodologies to obtain an improved, more precise, confocal response. The deconvolution scheme is based on a simple predictive model for depth resolution and the use of regularization techniques to minimize the dramatic oscillations in the recovered response typical of problem inversion.
