Atopic diseases such as Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) often progress into fibrosis (FS-EoE), compromising organ function with limited targeted treatment options. Mechanistic understanding of FS-EoE progression is confounded by the lack of preclinical models and the heavy focus of research on eosinophils themselves. We found that macrophage accumulation precedes esophageal fibrosis in FS-EoE patients.

Ruthenium(ii) complexes are attracting significant research attention as a promising class of photosensitizers (PSs) in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Having previously reported the synthesis of two novel Ru(ii)-polypyridyl-1,8-naphthalimide Tröger's base compounds 1 and 2 with interesting photophysical properties, where the emission from either the Ru(ii) polypyridyl centres or the naphthalimide moieties could be used to monitor binding to nucleic acids, we sought to use these compounds to investigate further and in more detail their biological profiling, which included unravelling their mechanism of cellular uptake, cellular trafficking and cellular responses to photoexcitation. Here we demonstrate that these compounds undergo rapid time dependent uptake in HeLa cells that involved energy dependent, caveolae and lipid raft-dependent mediated endocytosis, as demonstrated by confocal imaging, and transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

We have performed coincidence mass spectrometry of fragmentation of pyrene molecules by 70 eV electron impact. Ionized fragments have been mass selected using a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and a field programmable gate array has been used for the timing of the electron and ion extraction pulses and for the event-by-event detection of the ions. Double ionization results in a number of prominent fragmentations producing two singly-ionized fragments with kinetic energies of up to a few eV.

Epigenetic modification of chromosome structure has increasingly been associated with alterations in secondary metabolism and sporulation defects in filamentous fungal pathogens. Recently, the epigenetic reader protein SntB was shown to govern virulence, spore production and mycotoxin synthesis in the fruit pathogen Penicillium expansum. Through immunoprecipitation-coupled mass spectrometry, we found that SntB is a member of a protein complex with KdmB, a histone demethylase and the essential protein RpdA, a histone deacetylase.

Research producing evidence-based information on the health benefits of green and blue spaces often has within its design, the potential for inherent or implicit bias which can unconsciously orient the outcomes of such studies towards preconceived hypothesis. Many studies are situated in proximity to specific or generic green and blue spaces (hence, constituting a green or blue space led approach), others are conducted due to availability of green and blue space data (hence, applying a green or blue space data led approach), while other studies are shaped by particular interests in the association of particular health conditions with presence of, or engagements with green or blue spaces (hence, adopting a health or health status led approach). In order to tackle this bias and develop a more objective research design for studying associations between human health outcomes and green and blue spaces, this paper discussed the features of a methodological framework suitable for that purpose after an initial, year-long, exploratory Irish study.

Background: Integrated pest management (IPM) has a long history in fruit production and has become even more important with the implementation of the EU directive 2009/128/EC making IPM mandatory. In this study, we surveyed 30 apple orchards in Norway for 3 years (2016-2018) monitoring pest- and beneficial arthropods as well as evaluating fruit damage. We obtained growers' diaries of pest management and used these data to study positive and negative correlations of pesticides with the different arthropod groups and damage due to pests.

Recent research has shown that organizational leaders' tweets can influence employee anxiety. In this study, we turn the table and examine whether the same can be said about followers' tweets. Based on emotional contagion and a dataset of 108 leaders and 178 followers across 50 organizations, we infer and track state- and trait-anxiety scores of participants over 316 days, including pre- and post the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and crisis.

Two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) is a high-resolution protein separation technique, with the excellent dynamic range obtained by fluorescent tag labeling of protein samples. Scanned images of 2D-DIGE gels show thousands of protein spots, each spot representing a single or a group of protein isoforms. By using commercially available software, each protein spot is defined by an outline, which is digitized and correlated with the quantity of proteins present in each spot.

In this paper, we explore the role of perceived emotions and crisis communication strategies via organizational computer-mediated communication in predicting public anxiety, the default crisis emotion. We use a machine-learning approach to detect and predict anxiety scores in organizational crisis announcements on social media and the public's responses to these posts. We also control for emotional and language tones in organizational crisis responses using a separate machine learning algorithm.

Stimuli responsive anion transport is becoming an important aspect of supramolecular anion recognition chemistry. Herein, we report the synthesis of a family of anion receptors that incorporate a new anion binding motif, amidosquaramides. We show using experimental and computational methods that these receptors have p values close to physiological pH but also display intramolecular H-bonding interactions that affect anion recognition.

Do organizational leaders' tweets influence their employees' anxiety? And if so, have employees become more susceptible to their leader's social media communications during the COVID-19 pandemic? Based on emotional contagion and using machine learning algorithms to track anxiety and personality traits of 197 leaders and 958 followers across 79 organizations over 316 days, we find that during the pandemic leaders' tweets do influence follower state anxiety. In addition, followers of trait anxious leaders seem somewhat protected by sudden spikes in leader state anxiety, while followers of less trait anxious leaders are most affected by increased leader state anxiety. Multi-day lagged regressions showcase that this effect is stronger post-onset of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic crisis context.

Sleep is increasingly recognised as an important risk factor for metabolic disease, and as an important influence on severity in established metabolic disease. Recent evidence suggests that sleep timing variability (the day-to-day fluctuations of sleep timing) may be an important factor in metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the current study, we explore the associations between measures of sleep timing variability and cardiometabolic measures in a group of healthy middle-aged adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus.
