The increase in hydro dams in the Mekong River amidst the prevalence of multidrug-resistant malaria in Cambodia has raised concerns about global public health. Political conflicts during Covid-19 pandemic led cross-border movements of malaria cases from Myanmar and caused health care burden in Thailand. While previous publications used climatic indicators for predicting mosquito-borne diseases, this research used globally recognizable World Bank indicators to find the most impactful indicators related with malaria and shed light on the predictability of mosquito-borne diseases.

Microplastics merit attention as they can be ingested by lower trophic organisms, transferred to the food web, and pose potential risks to higher trophic levels. This study investigated the accumulation and effects of polyethylene microbeads (PEMBs, 63-75 μm) on adult water flea Moina macrocopa (600-800 μm), an order-magnitude difference in size, as a result of acute exposure. The organisms were exposed to PEMBs in four treatments of 0 (the Control), 5, 50, and 500 mg PEMB/L for examining PEMB accumulation, survival and reproduction of the organisms after the 24- and 48-h exposures.

This study applied an electro-Fenton process using chemically modified activated carbon derived from rubber seed shells loaded with α-FeOOH (RSCF) as catalyst to remove tetracycline residues from aquatic environment. Catalyst characteristics were evaluated using SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS, showing successful insertion of iron onto the activated carbon. The effects of the parameters were investigated, and the highest treatment efficiency was achieved at pH of 3, Fe: HO ratio (w/w) of 500:1, catalyst dose of 1 g/L, initial TCH concentration of 100 mg/L, and electric current of 150 mA, with more than 90% of TCH being eliminated within 30 min.

In this study, we investigated the possibility of a photocatalytic system that uses graphene-quantum-dot (GQD)-deposited graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to treat tetracycline (TC) and other organic compounds generated from an in-situ-recirculatory-aquaculture-system (RAS)-like shrimp farming pond. GQDs were successfully deposited on the exfoliated g-C3N4 base through a hydrothermal treatment. The results showed that the incorporation of GQDs into the g-C3N4 enhanced its porosity without aggregating its mesoporous structure.

Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is difficult to diagnose. We investigated whether a 3-gene host response signature in blood can distinguish TBM from other brain infections.
Methods: The expression of 3 genes (dual specificity phosphatase 3 [DUSP3], guanylate-binding protein [GBP5], krupple-like factor 2 [KLF2]) was analyzed by RNA sequencing of archived whole blood from 4 cohorts of Vietnamese adults: 281 with TBM, 279 with pulmonary tuberculosis, 50 with other brain infections, and 30 healthy controls.

Artificial intelligence (AI) radar technology offers several advantages over other technologies, including low cost, privacy assurance, high accuracy, and environmental resilience. One challenge faced by AI radar technology is the high cost of equipment and the lack of radar datasets for deep-learning model training. Moreover, conventional radar signal processing methods have the obstacles of poor resolution or complex computation.

In this study, we establish an efficient enzymatic approach for producing novel inotodiyl-oleates (IOs) from pure inotodiol and oleic acid to improve the properties of inotodiol. For the esterification between inotodiol and oleic acid, CALA and n-hexane were the optimal biocatalyst and solvents for forming IOs with 80.17% conversion yield.

Background: Adjunctive glucocorticoids are widely used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated tuberculous meningitis despite limited data supporting their safety and efficacy.
Methods: We conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving HIV-positive adults (≥18 years of age) with tuberculous meningitis in Vietnam and Indonesia. Participants were randomly assigned to receive a 6-to-8-week tapering course of either dexamethasone or placebo in addition to 12 months of antituberculosis chemotherapy.

Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) causes high mortality and morbidity, in part due to raised intracranial pressure (ICP). Automated pupillometry (NPi) and optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) are both low-cost, easy-to-use and non-invasive techniques that correlate with ICP and neurological status. However, it is uncertain how to apply these techniques in the management of TBM.

Introduction: Infection with is a recognized cause of severe malaria including deaths. The exact burden and patterns of severe monoinfections is however still not well quantified, especially in endemic regions. We examined the magnitude and patterns of severe malaria caused by monoinfections of and associated predictors among patients admitted to a tertiary care center for malaria in Vietnam.

Day-old male chick culling is one of the world's most inhumane problems in the poultry industry. Every year, seven billion male chicks are slaughtered in laying-hen hatcheries due to their higher feed exchange rate, lower management than female chicks, and higher production costs. This study describes a novel non-invasive method for determining the gender of chicken eggs.

In this work, we study the charge transfer improvement by the combination of two semiconductors of SERS. The energy levels of the semiconductor, when combined, become intermediate energy levels that support the charge transfer from the HOMO to the LUMO level, amplifying the Raman signal of the organic molecules. The SERS substrates of Ag/a-AlO-Al/ZnO nanorods with high sensitivity are prepared for detecting dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) and metronidazole (MNZ) standard.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a significant public health issue with an estimated increasing burden over the next 10 years. Early prediction of patients with a high risk of ESRD progression is crucial to monitor and initiate appropriate interventions, of which HLA alleles have been proposed as promising biomarkers. This cross-sectional study described HLA profiles of a Vietnamese cohort and investigated the association between HLA alleles and ESRD.

Analysis of temporal patterns of high-dimensional time-series water quality data is essential for pollution management worldwide. This study has applied dynamic factor analysis (DFA) and cluster analysis (CA) to analyze time-series water quality data monitored at the five stations installed along the La Buong river in Southern Vietnam. Application of the DFA identified two types of temporal patterns, one of the run-off driven parameters (total suspended solid (TSS), turbidity, and iron) and the other of diffuse source pollution.

Although in a critical position in the economy, the paper industry releases a lot of wastewater that requires adequate treatment for sustainable development. This study presents an application of Life cycle assessment (LCA) with the ReCiPe tool on the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a paper factory in Vietnam to evaluate the environmental effect of the individual techniques in WWTP, especially the internal circulation (IC) reactor, a pioneer and practical anaerobic technology. Both Midpoint and Endpoint categories results demonstrated that chemical use and electricity consumption mainly contributed to the environmental impact in the WWTP.

The cause of the Jones-Ray effect has been controversially debated for years. Ultrafine gas bubbles were employed to lessen the surface excess of the surface-active impurities adsorbing to the air/water interface of the salt solutions, which would lead to a direct shift in surface tension observable by the Wilhelmy plate method. It was concluded in this study that once the surface excess of the inevitable impurities in the salts is lessened by the introduction of ultrafine gas bubbles, which possess great air/water interfacial area, the Jones-Ray effect becomes nonobservable.
