Article Synopsis
  • A new method was created to trap certain chemical intermediates (benzopyrone-based ortho-quinone methides) using 3- and 5-amino pyrazoles or isoxazoles.
  • Various hybrid compounds were synthesized from natural phenolic Mannich bases and flavonoids, such as coumarin and isoflavone, with moderate to good yields depending on the position of the amino group.
  • Some of the resulting compounds, especially those with 5-aminoisoxazole, showed the ability to inhibit α-glucosidase, demonstrating potential biological activity with micromolar IC values.

An efficient green approach for the trapping of generated -and -quinone methide intermediates by imidazoles and pyrazoles has been developed. A wide range of quinone methide precursors based on simple phenols are compatible with the experimental protocol under mild thermal conditions. This methodology was demonstrated to be suitable for the synthesis of methylene-linked benzopyrone-azole hybrids using naturally occurring coumarin and chromone Mannich bases.

March 2024

Department of Biotechnology and Biochemistry, the National Polytechnic Institute, Guanajuato, 36824, Mexico.

Cultivated fruits and berries, such as raspberries, strawberries, black currants, cherries, blueberries, are generally recognized sources of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other substances beneficial to human health and well-being. However, there are also wild berries and fruits that are of undoubted interest as food products having valuable medicinal properties due to the presence of phenolic compounds, antioxidants, and vitamins. These fruits have a great potential to be used in functional food making.

Scientists without borders: lessons from Ukraine.

Gigascience

December 2022

Department of Biological Sciences, Oakland University, Rochester, MI 48309-4479, USA.

Conflicts and natural disasters affect entire populations of the countries involved and, in addition to the thousands of lives destroyed, have a substantial negative impact on the scientific advances these countries provide. The unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are just a few examples. Millions of people have been killed or displaced, their futures uncertain.

QSAR analysis of previously synthesized and nature-inspired virtual isoflavone-cytisine hybrids against the HEp-2 laryngeal carcinoma cell lines was performed using the OCHEM web platform. The validation of the models using an external test set proved that the models can be used to predict the activity of newly designed compounds such as 8-cytisinylmethyl derivatives of 5,7- and 6,7-dihydroxyisoflavones. The synthetic procedure for selective aminomethylation of 5,7-dihydroxyisoflavones with cytisine was developed.

Enzymatic Pretreatment of Plant Cells for Oil Extraction.

Food Technol Biotechnol

June 2023

Educational and Scientific Institute of Food Technology, Department of Fats, Perfumery and Cosmetic Products Technology, National University of Food Technologies, Kyiv, Volodymyrska street 68, 01601 Kyiv, Ukraine.

Oil from oilseeds can be extracted by mechanical extraction (pressing), aqueous extraction, or by extraction with organic solvents. Although solvent extraction is the most efficient method, organic solvents are a potential hazard to the life and health for workers as well as to the environment, when solvent vapours are released and act as air pollutant with a high ozone-forming potential. Pressing is safer, environmentally friendly, and it preserves valuable natural components in the resulting oils.

Lactic acid bacteria, being generally recognized as safe, are the preferred choice among other microbial producers of selenium nanoparticles. For successful production of SeNPs, it is necessary to take into account the physiological properties of the bacterium used as a biotransformer of inorganic forms of selenium in Se. The antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of SeNPs allows to use them in the form of pure nanoparticles or biomass of lactic acid bacteria enriched with selenium in preparation of food, in agriculture, aquaculture, medicine, veterinary, and manufacturing of packing materials for food products.

Microplastics are one of the major contaminants of aquatic nature where they can interact with organic and inorganic pollutants, including trace metals, and adsorb them. At the same time, after the microplastics have entered the aquatic environments, they are quickly covered with a biofilm - microorganisms which are able to produce extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that can facilitate sorption of trace metals from surrounding water. The microbial community of biofilm contains bacteria which synthesizes EPS with antimicrobial activity making them more competitive than other microbial inhabitants.

Practically almost all technological processes that affect the milk influence the content of ionic calcium present in it. The most popular method to determine ionic calcium is direct potentiometry using ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). This study proposes an approach to evaluate the measurement uncertainty for the determination of ionic calcium by the ISE method based on JCGM 100 - evaluation of measurement data - guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM) with the simulation of the total uncertainty by the Monte Carlo method.

A new water-soluble thermosensitive star-like copolymer, dextran-graft-poly-N-iso-propilacrylamide (D-g-PNIPAM), was created and characterized by various techniques (size-exclusion chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) spectroscopy). The viability of cancer cell lines (human transformed cervix epithelial cells, HeLa) as a model for cancer cells was studied using MTT and Live/Dead assays after incubation with a D-g-PNIPAM copolymer as a carrier for the drug doxorubicin (Dox) as well as a D-g-PNIPAM + Dox mixture as a function of the concentration. FTIR spectroscopy clearly indicated the complex formation of Dox with the D-g-PNIPAM copolymer.
