Background: The popularity of e-cigarettes has increased rapidly in the last decade, particularly among teens and young adults, being advertised as a less harmful alternative to conventional tobacco products. However, in vitro and in vivo studies have evidenced a variable quantity of potentially harmful components and some recognized carcinogens which may cause DNA damage in oral cells. Additionally, evidence suggests that e-cigarettes may play active roles in the pathogenesis of other malignancies, such as lung and bladder cancers.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) control in small ruminants has relied on the systematic use of synthetic anthelmintics (AH), their effectiveness has been progressively decreasing due to the rise and diffusion of anthelmintic resistances. The most prevalent genera affecting small ruminants were Haemonchus spp., and Trichostrongylus spp.

The input of external energy and matter in recipient ecosystems can act as a bottom-up force that subsidizes consumers, with subsequent cascading effects throughout the food web. Depending on the amount of input, dietary preference, and the strength of trophic links, allochthonous resources generally play a stabilizing role on food webs. In this study, we investigated the stabilizing role of allochthonous aquatic resources on intraguild predation (IGP) and their consequences on shared prey in a terrestrial ecosystem.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer incidence is notably high in Paraguay, particularly among indigenous women, with HPV being a key factor; this study focused on analyzing HPV prevalence among these women.
  • A total of 181 sexually active indigenous women from various ethnic groups were tested for HPV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) using multiple detection methods, finding a high prevalence of STIs, notably HPV.
  • Results showed that 41.4% of participants tested positive for at least one STI, with a significant correlation between HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis, highlighting the need for enhanced control measures and improved diagnosis of STIs in these communities.
