Fish and marine fatty acids intakes, the genotypes and long-term weight gain: a prospective cohort study.

BMJ Open

July 2019

Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Objective: We tested whether genetic variants near fatty acid desaturases gene () cluster, which were recently identified to be signatures of adaptation to fish-rich and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)-rich diet, interacted with these dietary factors on change in body mass index (BMI).

Design: Three variants were examined for gene-diet interactions on long-term (~10 years) changes in BMI and body weight in four prospective cohort studies.

Setting: Population based study.

Objective: To evaluate the impact on healthcare utilisation frequencies and charges, and mortality of a programme for frequent hospital utilisers and a programme for patients requiring high acuity post-discharge care as part of an integrated healthcare model.

Design: A retrospective quasi-experimental study without randomisation where patients who received post-discharge care interventions were matched 1:1 with unenrolled patients as controls.

Setting: The National University Health System (NUHS) Regional Health System (RHS), which was one of six RHS in Singapore, implemented the NUHS RHS Integrated Interventions and Care Extension (NICE) programme for frequent hospital utilisers and the NUHS Transitional Care Programme (NUHS TCP) for high acuity post-discharge care.

Objectives: To study the correlation between knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of antibiotic consumption with epidemiology and molecular characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) carriage, in order to identify modifiable factors and public health interventions to reduce prevalence of multidrug-resistant organism colonisation in the community.

Design: Cross-sectional questionnaire of KAP towards antibiotic use and collection of stool samples or rectal swabs. ESBL-PE isolates obtained underwent whole genome sequencing to identify resistance genes.

Whether injured terrorists should receive equal consideration in medical triage as their victims is a morally and emotionally challenging issue for healthcare providers. Against the conventional approach, some commentators have argued for a principle in which severely injured victims should always be prioritised over an injured terrorist even if the terrorist is worse off based on justice ideas. This paper argues that supporters of fail to sufficiently justify the subversion of the equal rights of terrorists to treatment and the role and professional ethics of healthcare providers in the allocation of scarce medical resources.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a generalised connective tissue disorder associated with low bone mass, bone fragility and increased susceptibility to fractures. First-line treatment to improve bone mineral density (BMD) is usually with bisphosphonates but long-term usage has been associated with uncommon complications such as atypical femoral fractures (AFF). Treatment with teriparatide in this situation has been reported with positive outcomes.

Objectives: Self-efficacy and self-care measures are key attributes to optimal control of essential hypertension. Self-efficacy can be measured by the Hypertension Self-Care Profile (HTN-SCP) tool but its utility is dependent on the literacy and understanding of the subjects. A Malay version of the HTN-SCP Tool was developed to assess self-efficacy of Malay-literate patients with hypertension in the multi-ethnic Asian population in Singapore.
