Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is characterized by an autoimmune inflammatory response to hair follicles. Several studies have suggested that infection and vaccination can trigger an autoimmune process around hair follicles. Moreover, reports of AA and various other autoimmune diseases have increased since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic became established.

Background: For patients who achieve pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy with trastuzumab (T) and pertuzumab (P), the benefit of adding P to T remains uncertain. We compared survival outcomes according to the type of adjuvant anti-HER2 therapy in patients with pCR after chemotherapy with TP.

Method: Patients who achieved pCR in both the breast and axilla after neoadjuvant chemotherapy with TP were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of one-hour post-load plasma glucose (1 h-PG) levels as an early marker for Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) risk by analyzing a longitudinal cohort over ten years.
  • It categorizes participants into three groups based on their initial 1 h-PG levels and measures insulin sensitivity and β-cell function at different stages.
  • Results indicate that individuals with higher 1 h-PG levels have a greater risk of developing T2D and experiencing decreased insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, highlighting the potential for early interventions in those with high 1 h-PG but normal glucose tolerance.

Purpose: In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical feasibility of deep learning (DL)-based reconstruction applied to conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (cDWI) and synthetic diffusion-weighted imaging (sDWI) by comparing the DL reconstructions to cDWIs and sDWIs in patients with various breast malignancies.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 115 patients with biopsy-proven breast malignancies who underwent breast magnetic resonance imaging from July 2022 to June 2023, including cDWI with b-value of 800 s/mm (cDWI) sDWI with b-value of 1500 s/mm (sDWI), DWI using DL-based reconstruction (DL-DWI) with b-value of 800 s/mm, and synthetic DL-DWI with b-value of 1500 s/mm (DL-DWI and sDL-DWI). Two radiologists independently performed the qualitative analyses using a 5-point Likert scale for all DWI sets.

Background: Bone defects are commonly encountered due to accidents, diseases, or aging, and the demand for effective bone regeneration, particularly for dental implants, is increasing in our aging society. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are promising candidates for regenerative therapies; however, obtaining sufficient quantities of these cells for clinical applications remains challenging. DW-MSCs, derived from embryonic stem cells and developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical, exhibit a robust proliferative capacity even after extensive culture.

Chemoresistance-motility signature of molecular evolution to chemotherapy in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and its clinical implications.

Cancer Lett

February 2025

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Dong-A University, Busan, 49315, South Korea; Department of Health Sciences, The Graduated of Dong-A University, Busan, 49315, South Korea. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * The researchers created a 63-gene signature called Chemoresistance-Motility (CrM) to study how NMIBC evolves over time and used it to analyze 1,846 samples, revealing that early resistance stages are linked to increased cell movement and metastasis.
  • * The study suggests that patients with high CrM scores have worse outcomes, ineffective responses to BCG and immune therapies, and identifies five alternative drugs to gemcitabine that may be effective, proposing a need for further validation of these findings.

Department of Internal Medicine, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Research Institute for Convergence of Biomedical Science and Technology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Yangsan, Republic of Korea; Transplantation Research Center, Research Institute for Convergence of Biomedical Science and Technology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Yangsan, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the "obesity paradox," revealing that obese patients with sepsis have better one-year survival rates compared to non-obese patients.
  • Obese patients showed a lower mortality rate (52%) than their non-obese counterparts (64.8%) after sepsis, and body mass index (BMI) was found to significantly affect these outcomes.
  • Additionally, the research highlights the importance of muscle mass over fat mass in improving survival rates after sepsis, suggesting the need for targeted nutritional and conditioning programs for these patients.

Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assessment of Primary Tumors for Predicting Axillary Tumor Burden in Women with Invasive Breast Cancer.

Br J Radiol

November 2024

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Biomedical Research Institute, Pusan National University Hospital, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Busan, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how features seen in multiparametric MRI of breast tumors relate to the amount of tumor found in axillary lymph nodes for women with invasive breast cancer.
  • Key findings indicate that factors like peritumoral edema, lower ADC values, larger tumor size, and certain histological types are linked to a higher number of affected lymph nodes.
  • The research concludes that MRI characteristics, specifically peritumoral edema and ADCmax values, can help predict how much cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

The lack of early assessment tools for swallowing function in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) may lead to delays in oral intake. This study assessed the effectiveness of a new bedside swallowing screening tool in detecting dysphagia in patients in the ICU or isolation settings, where isolation settings refer to conditions such as COVID-19, where patient mobility is limited. We assessed swallowing function in 13 patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 as a Prognostic Marker in Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Life (Basel)

November 2024

Family Medicine Clinic and Research Institute for Convergence of Biomedical Science and Technology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Yangsan 50612, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a severe kidney cancer with a poor prognosis, and the role of Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) in its progression is not well understood.
  • In this study, researchers compared NPC1L1 expression in normal versus RCC tissues and found that lower levels in RCC, especially in certain subtypes, were linked to worse patient survival.
  • The findings indicate that higher NPC1L1 levels could be a potential independent prognostic marker for bad outcomes in RCC, necessitating further research on its mechanisms in cancer progression.

  • This study analyzed the clinical outcomes of patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) based on their left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) across three categories: heart failure with reduced EF (HFrEF), mildly reduced EF (HFmrEF), and preserved EF (HFpEF).
  • The research found that in-hospital mortality rates were similar for NSTEMI and STEMI patients with HFrEF and HFmrEF, but NSTEMI patients had higher 3-year mortality rates. In the HFpEF group, STEMI patients experienced worse in-hospital outcomes compared to NSTEMI patients.
