Glioblastoma (GBM) has a fatal prognosis because of its aggressive and invasive characteristics. Understanding the mechanism of invasion necessitates an elucidation of the relationship between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment. However, there has been a scarcity of suitable models to investigate this.

Background: The Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) method is a widely used tool for assessing patient severity and predicting survival probability in trauma care. However, its accuracy and applicability in the Korean context, particularly for neurotrauma patients, have not been thoroughly validated yet. Previous studies at a single institution have identified significant discrepancies between TRISS predictions and actual outcomes, particularly in severe neurotrauma cases.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared open versus closed healing methods after alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in dogs with damaged extraction sockets, using specific materials for the procedure.
  • - Results showed that the open group had quicker wound healing and maintained more keratinized tissue compared to the closed group, although the overall ridge dimensions and new bone formation were similar between both methods.
  • - In conclusion, while both healing approaches produced comparable outcomes in ridge dimensions and bone growth, open healing minimized buccal bone loss and enhanced keratinized tissue.

  • Achieving C-reactive protein (CRP) normalization is key in predicting treatment response for Crohn's disease (CD) patients starting biological therapy, but data on success rates and timelines were previously limited.
  • In a study involving 183 patients from multiple centers, 67.2% reached CRP normalization within a median of 3.8 months.
  • Factors such as use of 5-aminosalicylic acid and high albumin levels were linked to early CRP normalization, while certain behavioral patterns were associated with lower likelihood of reaching this goal.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effectiveness of patient-performed rapid antigen tests (RATs) in detecting COVID-19 variants Delta and Omicron during the pandemic, particularly in self-testing scenarios in Korea.
  • Researchers conducted a multicenter clinical study involving participants without prior diagnostic experience and compared RAT results with the more accurate reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing.
  • Results showed that RATs were better at detecting the Omicron variant, while their performance for Delta was lower, especially among those who were only partially vaccinated, highlighting the need for careful use of these tests in different vaccination contexts.

  • - Angiomyofibroblastoma (AMFB) is a very rare benign tumor found in the lower genital tract, mainly affecting premenopausal women and usually requires surgical removal.
  • - A unique case involved a 51-year-old woman with breast cancer who had a large pelvic mass, which turned out to be AMFB in the uterus, confirmed through histopathology and immunohistochemical analysis.
  • - This case emphasizes the need for accurate diagnosis of AMFB, as it can mimic other tumors like aggressive angiomyxoma, and suggests potential connections with uterine myomas that need further research.

Department of Family Medicine and Research Institute for Convergence of Biomedical Science and Technology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Yangsan 50612, Republic of Korea.

: This study aimed to investigate the association between insulin resistance, as measured by the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), and hearing impairment in middle-aged women in Korea. : This cross-sectional survey utilized data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) IV (2007-2009), specifically from the period after July 21, 2009, when hearing test results became available, and from the KNHANES V (2010-2012). This study was conducted on 5416 women aged 40 to 69 who had completed both the health examination survey and audiometric tests, excluding those with missing data on menopausal status and the use of hormone replacement therapy.

Background And Purpose: Nutritional status can influence the outcomes and mortality of various diseases. The association between initial nutritional status and ischemic stroke outcomes, however, remains poorly understood. This study investigated whether the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score at admission could predict functional recovery, complications, and survival following an ischemic stroke.

Background: Although there is consensus to use immunoglobulins and corticosteroids as first-line treatments for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), the effectiveness of biological immunomodulators in patients refractory to standard therapy remains unclear. We aimed to outline real-world data on biological immunomodulators.

Method: A literature search using Ovid-Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane CDSR, and KMBASE was conducted from September 2021 to August 2022; certainty of evidence was assessed via GRADE.

Background/objectives: This study evaluated the impact of fluorescence lymph node mapping (FLNM) using indocyanine green (ICG) on the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative computed tomography (CT) in right-sided colon cancer.

Methods: A total of 218 patients who underwent laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with D3 lymph node dissection (LND) were analyzed: 86 patients in the FLNM group and 132 in the conventional surgery group. The FLNM technique allowed for enhanced intraoperative visualization of lymph node (LN) and more precise dissection, improving the identification of metastatic LNs.

Department of Biotechnology, College of Life Science and Biotechnology, Yonsei University, 50 Yonsei-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul 03722, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • - Scrub typhus is a tick-borne disease caused by an intracellular bacterium, presenting with symptoms like rash, headache, and fever, making it hard to distinguish from other illnesses.
  • - Diagnosis can be tricky due to non-characteristic symptoms and the low effectiveness of current tests, leading to the need for better detection methods.
  • - This study introduces a nucleic acid extraction method that improves sensitivity by analyzing two target genes, achieving 100% specificity and 95.24% sensitivity from 38 patient samples, which helps differentiate scrub typhus from similar diseases.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, with aldose reductase playing a critical role in the pathophysiology of diabetic complications. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of flavonoid compounds as potential aldose reductase inhibitors using a combination of molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The three-dimensional structures of representative flavonoid compounds were obtained from PubChem, minimized, and docked against aldose reductase using Discovery Studio's CDocker module.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that can cause vision loss leading to blindness in people with diabetes. Improved methods to treat and prevent vision loss in diabetic patients are in high demand owing to limited current treatment procedures. Herein, we report a new class of transglutaminase 2 (TGase2) inhibitors for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy based on 7-aminoquinoline-5,8-dione derivatives.

  • This study analyzed organ donors who died after life support was turned off, focusing on their suitability for donation after circulatory death.
  • Out of 177 patients, 27.7% were potential organ donors, but only 11.3% met the medical criteria for donation, with a significant number showing a flat ECG shortly after death.
  • A majority of surveyed critical care physicians (59.2%) supported a 5-minute no-touch period before declaring circulatory death, which is relevant for organ donation decisions.
