Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease, primarily associated with aging, that results from decreased bone density and bone volume. This reduction significantly increases the risk of fractures in osteoporosis patients compared to individuals with normal bone density. Additionally, the bone regeneration process in these patients is slow, making complete healing difficult.

Background And Purpose: Dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, is a significant global health concern, with early diagnosis and treatment development being critical goals. While numerous cohorts have advanced dementia research, there is a lack of comprehensive data on ethnic differences, particularly for the Korean population. The Korea-Registries to Overcome Dementia and Accelerate Dementia Research (K-ROAD) aims to establish a large-scale, hospital-based dementia cohort to address this gap, with a focus on understanding disease progression, developing early diagnostics, and supporting treatment advancements specific to the Korean population.

Background And Purpose: We aimed to develop the diagnostic matrix of the Seoul Cognitive Status Test (SCST) and compare its performance with traditional paper-and-pencil neuropsychological tests, including the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery-II (SNSB-II) and the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-K).
Methods: We recruited 197 participants from the head-to-head SCST-SNSB cohort, and 204 participants from the head-to-head SCST-CERAD cohort. They underwent either SNSB-II or CERAD-K, in addition to SCST.

Endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) has emerged as a transformative approach for managing gastrointestinal (GI) transmural defects, offering a less invasive and more promising alternative to surgery. Initially developed to address anastomotic leaks after rectal surgery, the application of EVT has expanded to include other locations within the GI tract. This review investigated the principles, indications, procedures, outcomes, challenges, and future perspectives of EVT for the management of GI transmural defects.

Background And Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted people's lifestyles, changing sleep patterns. This study investigated changes in sleep patterns and disturbances in South Koreans over the past decade, including during the pandemic.
Methods: We compared data from the Korean Sleep Headache Society Phase I survey (n = 2484; conducted in 2010) and the National Sleep Survey of South Korea 2022 (n = 3729; conducted in 2022), involving participants aged 20-69 years.

Background/aims: We previously reported that patients with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis (UC) often experience common mental disorders (CMDs) such as anxiety and depression, necessitating immediate psychological interventions within the first 4 weeks of diagnosis. In this 3-year follow-up study of the MOSAIK cohort in Korea, we examined the effects of CMDs at initial diagnosis on clinical outcomes and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
Methods: We examined differences in clinical outcomes (evaluated based on clinical response, relapse, hospitalization, and medication use) and HRQoL (assessed using the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire [IBDQ] and Short Form 12 [SF-12]) according to Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores at diagnosis.

Background: The age at onset (AAO) of Parkinson's disease (PD) varies widely among individuals and significantly influences disease progression and prognosis. However, few genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have investigated genetic variants determining AAO, particularly in East Asian populations.
Objectives: To identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affecting AAO of PD in Korean patients.

Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) frequently experience anemia, and maintaining hemoglobin (Hb) levels within a targeted range using erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) is challenging. This study introduces a gated recurrent unit-attention-based module (GAM) for efficient anemia management among patients undergoing chronic dialysis and proposes a novel alert system for anticipating the need for red blood cell transfusions. Data on demographic characteristics, dialysis metrics, drug administration, laboratory tests, and transfusion history were retrospectively collected from patients undergoing hemodialysis at Kangwon National University Hospital between 2017 and 2022.

Backgruound: Liver fibrosis is a common outcome of chronic liver disease and is primarily driven by hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation. Irisin, a myokine released during physical exercise, is beneficial for metabolic disorders and mitochondrial dysfunction. This study aimed to explore the effects of irisin on liver fibrosis in HSCs, a bile duct ligation (BDL) mouse model, and the associated mitochondrial dysfunction.

Background: mutations are associated with poor prognosis in myelodysplastic neoplasm (MDS) and AML. The updated 5th WHO classification and International Consensus Classification (ICC) categorize -mutated MDS and AML as unique entities. We conducted a multicenter study in Korea to investigate the characteristics of -mutated MDS and AML, focusing on diagnostic aspects based on updated classifications.

Background: Neck pain and primary headache disorders are highly prevalent in populations and clinical cohorts. Medication-overuse headache (MOH) is a treatable secondary headache, mainly developing in migraine sufferers, that accounts for the majority of patients presenting to headache clinics. Nevertheless, the association between neck pain and MOH has not been reported.

Objective: To evaluate whether breast parenchymal features of the contralateral breast on preoperative MRI are associated with primary breast cancer characteristics and disease-free survival (DFS) in women with invasive breast cancer.
Materials And Methods: Women with newly diagnosed invasive breast cancer who underwent preoperative breast MRI followed by surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) on dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and background diffusion signal (BDS) on diffusion-weighted MRI of the contralateral breast were qualitatively assessed using a four-category scale: minimal, mild, moderate, or marked.

Unhealthy diet-related behaviors and poor diet quality during childhood and adolescence are the main factors contributing to noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiometabolic syndrome. Unhealthy diet-related behaviors can become lifelong habits associated with mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and substance abuse issues such as smoking, drinking, and other chemical compounds. Children and adolescents are in the developmental stages of brain structure, function, and neurotransmission systems, which can make them more susceptible to substance abuse (tobacco, alcohol, and drugs).

Despite the high incidence of dry mouth in postmenopausal women, its underlying mechanisms and therapeutic interventions remain underexplored. Using ovariectomized (OVX) mouse models, here this study identifies ferroptosis, an iron-dependent regulated cell death, as a central mechanism driving postmenopausal salivary gland (SG) dysfunction. In the OVX-SGs, TGFβ signaling pathway is enhanced with the aberrant TGFβ2 expression in SG mesenchymal cells.

Introduction: Physical activity is widely accepted as a therapeutic approach to age-related muscle mass loss. However, it is unclear whether all physical activity domains benefit muscle mass maintenance. This study investigated the association between low muscle mass and domain-specific physical activity, including leisure-time and occupational moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).
