Nowadays, image analysis has a relevant role in most scientific and research areas. This process is used to extract and understand information from images to obtain a model, knowledge, and rules in the decision process. In the case of biological areas, images are acquired to describe the behavior of a biological agent in time such as cells using a mathematical and computational approach to generate a system with automatic control.

Microcontact printing using PDMS embossing tools and its variations have aroused the interest of a wide spectrum of research fields, hence the feasibility of defining micro and nanoscale patterns. In this work, we have proposed and demonstrated a novel lithography method based on grayscale patterns printed in a flexographic photopolymer mold and transferred to epoxy resin and a single PDMS stamp to obtain different microprint pattern structures. The geometry of the patterns can be modified by adjusting the layout and grayscale of the stamp patterns.

On-farm methane (CH) emissions need to be estimated accurately so that the mitigation effect of recommended practices can be accounted for. In the present study prediction equations for enteric CH have been developed in lieu of expensive animal measurement approaches. Our objectives were to: (1) compile a dataset from individual beef cattle data for the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region; (2) determine main predictors of CH emission variables; (3) develop and cross-validate prediction models according to dietary forage content (DFC); and (4) compare the predictive ability of these newly-developed models with extant equations reported in literature, including those currently used for CH inventories in LAC countries.

Machine learning methods have increasingly been used to map out brain-behavior associations (BBA), and to predict out-of-scanner behavior of unseen subjects. Given the brain changes that occur in the context of aging, the accuracy of these predictions is likely to depend on how similar the training and testing data sets are in terms of age. To this end, we examined how well BBAs derived from an age-group generalize to other age-groups.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) contributes to lipolysis of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TGRL) by lipoprotein lipase (LPL) via acquirement of surface lipids, including free cholesterol (FC), released upon lipolysis. According to the reverse remnant-cholesterol transport (RRT) hypothesis recently developed by us, acquirement of FC by HDL is reduced at both low and extremely high HDL concentrations, potentially underlying the U-shaped relationship between HDL-cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. Mechanisms underlying impaired FC transfer however remain indeterminate.

Conventional manufacturing methods for polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based microdevices require multiple steps and elements that increase cost and production time. Also, these PDMS microdevices are mostly limited to single use, and it is difficult to recover the contents inside the microchannels or perform advanced microscopy visualization due to their irreversible sealing method. Herein, we developed a novel manufacturing method based on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) plates adjusted using a mechanical pressure-based system.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants of critical environmental and public health concern and their elimination from contaminated sites is significant for the environment. Biodegradation studies have demonstrated the ability of bacteria in biofilm conformation to enhance the biodegradation of pollutants. In this study, we used our newly developed microfluidic platform to explore biofilm development, properties, and applications of fluid flow, as a new technique for screening PAHs-degrading biofilms.

Microbial biofilms are composed of surface-adhered microorganisms enclosed in extracellular polymeric substances. The biofilm lifestyle is the intrinsic drug resistance imparted to bacterial cells protected by the matrix. So far, conventional drug susceptibility tests for biofilm are reagent and time-consuming, and most of them are in static conditions.

Behavior-associated structural connectivity (SC) and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) networks undergo various changes in aging. To study these changes, we proposed a continuous dimension where at one end networks generalize well across age groups in terms of behavioral predictions (age-general) and at the other end, they predict behaviors well in a specific age group but fare poorly in another age group (age-specific). We examined how age generalizability/specificity of multimodal behavioral associated brain networks varies across behavioral domains and imaging modalities.

Successful mitigation efforts entail accurate estimation of on-farm emission and prediction models can be an alternative to current laborious and costly in vivo CH measurement techniques. This study aimed to: (1) collate a database of individual dairy cattle CH emission data from studies conducted in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region; (2) identify key variables for predicting CH production (g d) and yield [g kg of dry matter intake (DMI)]; (3) develop and cross-validate these newly-developed models; and (4) compare models' predictive ability with equations currently used to support national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories. A total of 42 studies including 1327 individual dairy cattle records were collated.

Background: Cord blood leptin and adiponectin are adipokines known to be associated with birth weight and overall infant adiposity. However, few studies have investigated their associations with abdominal adiposity in neonates. We examined maternal factors associated with cord blood leptin and adiponectin, and the association of these adipokines with neonatal adiposity and abdominal fat distribution measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in an Asian mother-offspring cohort.

It is known that nitrate inhibits ruminal methanogenesis, mainly through competition with hydrogenotrophic methanogens for available hydrogen (H) and also through toxic effects on the methanogens. However, there is limited knowledge about its effects on the others members of ruminal microbiota and their metabolites. In this study, we investigated the effects of dietary nitrate inclusion on enteric methane (CH) emission, temporal changes in ruminal microbiota, and fermentation in Holstein calves.
