Microplastics (MPs) are in some ways the expected product of man-made plastics that are considered as a pollutant ubiquitous in the environment. This is particularly notorious in continental waters, along coastlines, and especially in the North Pacific Gyre, sometimes called the Pacific Garbage Patch. Even now, there is growing concern that MPs can harm wildlife, enter the food chain, and end up in the human body.

The study of diffusion in biological materials is crucial for fields like food science, engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Research that combines numerical and analytical methods is needed to better understand diffusive phenomena across various dimensions and under variable boundary conditions within food matrices. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the diffusion of substances through biological materials analytically and numerically, calculating diffusivity and conducting surface analysis.

Purpose: To use computational modeling to provide a complete and logical description of the electrical and thermal behavior during stereoelectroencephalography-guided (SEEG) radiofrequency thermo-coagulation (RF-TC).
Methods: A coupled electrical-thermal model was used to obtain the temperature distributions in the tissue during RF-TC. The computer model was first validated by an model based on liver fragments and later used to study the impact of three different factors on the coagulation zone size: 1) the difference in the tissue surrounding the electrode (gray/white matter), 2) the presence of a peri-electrode gap occupied by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and 3) the energy setting used (power-duration).

Microfluidic models have become essential instruments for studying enhanced oil recovery techniques through fluid and chemical injection into micromodels to observe interactions with pore structures and resident fluids. The widespread use of cost-effective lab-on-a-chip devices, known for efficient data extraction and minimal reagent usage, has driven demand for efficient data management methods crucial for high-performance data and image analyses. This article introduces a semiautomatic method for calculating oil recovery in polymeric nanofluid flooding experiments based on the background subtraction (BSEO).

Objectives: To determine the agreement between HNNE and TIMP at TCA for preterm infants born <32 weeks' gestation, and to evaluate their correlation to PDMS-2 at 12-month corrected age (CA).
Methods: Infants born between November 2013 to June 2022 who had both HNNE and TIMP performed at TCA of 37-41 weeks gestation, and motor outcome assessed using the PDMS-2 at 12-month old were enrolled. The HNNE and 12-month PDMS-2 findings were categorized as optimal vs sub-optimal.

This study is based on an investigation of the transport phenomenon, specifically the quantification of arsenic diffusion in carrots within a temperature range of 89 °C-99 °C using a thin plate model. Studying the diffusion of arsenic in carrots is important due to its toxicity, as it can concentrate during cooking. The World Health Organization considers arsenic as one of the ten chemical substances of public health concern.

Introduction: The heterogeneity of depressive and anxiety disorders complicates clinical management as it may account for differences in trajectory and treatment response. Self-schemas, which can be determined by Self-Referential Judgements (SRJs), are heterogeneous yet stable. SRJs have been used to characterize personality in the general population and shown to be prognostic in depressive and anxiety disorders.

Inflammation is a vital defense mechanism, creating hostile conditions for pathogens, preventing the spread of tissue infection and repairing damaged tissues in humans and animals. However, when inflammation resolution is delayed or compromised as a result of its misregulation, the process proceeds from the acute phase to chronic inflammation, leading to the development of various chronic illnesses. It is proven that redox balance disturbances and oxidative stress are among major factors inducing NF-κB and leading to over-inflammation.

Accounting and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are mandatory for Parties under the Paris Agreement. Emissions reporting is important for understanding the global carbon cycle and for addressing global climate change. However, in a period of open conflict or war, military emissions increase significantly and the accounting system is not currently designed to account adequately for this source.

Spaceflight-induced changes in astronaut telomeres have garnered significant attention in recent years. While plants represent an essential component of future long-duration space travel, the impacts of spaceflight on plant telomeres and telomerase have not been examined. Here we report on the telomere dynamics of Arabidopsis thaliana grown aboard the International Space Station.

To study the anti-inflammatory potential of the two synthetic cannabinoids 4'-F-CBD and HU-910, we used post-natal brain cultures of mouse microglial cells and astrocytes activated by reference inflammogens. We found that 4'-F-CBD and HU-910 efficiently curtailed the release of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β in microglia and astrocytes activated by the bacterial Toll-Like Receptor (TLR)4 ligand LPS. Upon LPS challenge, 4'-F-CBD and HU-910 also prevented the activation of phenotypic activation markers specific to microglia and astrocytes, that is, Iba-1 and GFAP, respectively.

Microplastics are a major modern challenge that must be addressed to protect the environment, particularly the marine environment. Microplastics, defined as particles ≤5 mm, are ubiquitous in the environment. Their small size for a relatively large surface area, high persistence and easy distribution in water, soil and air require the development of new analytical methods to monitor their presence.

CHase catalyzes chlorogenic acid (CGA) hydrolysis to yield equimolar quinic (QA) and caffeic (CA) acids, products of high value and keen industrial interest. We proposed the preparation and characterization of the nonviable mycelium of Aspergillus niger AKU 3302 containing a cell-associated CHase (CHase biocatalyst) for application in hydrolyzing the CGA from yerba mate residues to produce QA and CA. When the vegetative mycelium was heated at 55 °C for 30 min, no loss of CHase activity occurred, but vegetative mycelial growth and spore germination ended.

Understanding the methane (CH) emissions that are produced by enteric fermentation is one of the main problems to be solved for livestock, due to their GHG effects. These emissions are affected by the quantity and quality of their diets, thus, it is key to accurately define the intake and fiber content (NDF) of these forage diets. On the other hand, different emission prediction equations have been developed; however, there are scarce and uncertain results regarding their evaluation of the emissions that have been observed in forage diets.

The impact of aviation on climate change is reflected in increasing emissions of CO2 and other pollutants from fuel burning emitted at high altitudes, representing 2.9 % of total Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in 2019. However, mitigations options for decarbonization of aviation are difficult to implement given operational safety, technology maturity, energy density and other constraints.
