Background: Inguinal hernia repair (IHR) is a common surgical procedure worldwide. Although IHR can be performed by the minimally invasive method, which accelerates recovery, postoperative urinary retention (POUR) remains a common complication that significantly impacts patients. Thus, it is essential to identify the risk factors associated with POUR to diminish its negative impact.

Anemia is a significant global health issue, affecting over a billion people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Generally, the gold standard for diagnosing anemia relies on laboratory measurements of hemoglobin. To meet the need in clinical practice, physicians often rely on visual examination of specific areas, such as conjunctiva, to assess pallor.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a crucial prognostic factor in oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). p16 is a surrogate marker for diagnosing HPV+ OPC, however it is not direct evidence of HPV existence.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to evaluate an HPV DNA test-Cobas HPV assay-in diagnosing HPV+ OPC through neck lymph node aspiration.

CDK4/6 inhibitors combined with endocrine therapy prolonged survival in hormone receptor (HR)-positive and HER2-negative advanced breast cancer. We investigated whether CDK4/6 inhibitors enhance radiosensitivity and their underlying mechanisms of this subtype of breast cancer. In vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted using two HR-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and T-47D), CDK4/6 inhibitors (ribociclib and palbociclib) and radiotherapy (RT) to assess the biological functions and mechanisms.

Introduction: EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are the standard therapy for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with EGFR-activating mutations in the first-line setting. Despite initial efficacy, resistance to EGFR-TKIs often develops, and platinum-based chemotherapy is the predominant subsequent treatment. For this study, we aimed to identify prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) among advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients receiving platinum-pemetrexed after progression on EGFR-TKIs.

Background/purpose: Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is a common functional deficit after stroke. Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) had been proven to be an independent factor for PSD. However, the relationship between TMT and PSD based on quantitative swallowing kinematic analysis remains unexplored.

Importance: Despite its demonstrated benefits in improving cardiovascular risk profiles, the association of tirzepatide with mortality and cardiovascular and kidney outcomes compared with glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) remains unknown.

Objective: To investigate the association of tirzepatide with mortality and adverse cardiovascular and kidney outcomes compared with GLP-1 RAs in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study used US Collaborative Network of TriNetX data collected on individuals with type 2 diabetes aged 18 years or older initiating tirzepatide or GLP-1 RA between June 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023; without stage 5 chronic kidney disease or kidney failure at baseline; and without myocardial infarction or ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke within 60 days of drug initiation.

Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid hormone involved in controlling electrolyte balance, blood pressure, and cellular signaling. It plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular and metabolic physiology. Excess aldosterone activates mineralocorticoid receptors, leading to subsequent inflammatory responses, increased oxidative stress, and tissue remodeling.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is linked to heart issues, particularly in patients with complete left bundle branch block (cLBBB), potentially worsening heart failure outcomes.
  • A study of 416 patients with cLBBB found that factors such as older age, congestive heart failure, and advanced CKD significantly increase total and cardiovascular mortality risk.
  • The presence of CKD in patients with cLBBB notably raised mortality risks compared to those without CKD, highlighting the severe impact of these conditions when they coexist.

  • Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a serious heart condition primarily caused by mutations in the RYR2 gene, which accounts for about 60% of cases and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.!* -
  • This study, which used data from the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome Registry in Taiwan, analyzed 40 Taiwanese CPVT patients and found 55% had RYR2 mutations, similar to global rates, with some novel variants identified.!* -
  • Exercise-induced symptoms like fainting and cardiac arrest were reported more frequently in East Asian cohorts compared to Caucasians, highlighting the need for genetic testing tailored to different ethnic groups.!*

The clinical manifestations of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) vary widely. However, the current classification of ALS is based mainly on clinical presentations, and the roles of electrophysiological and biomedical biomarkers remain limited. Herein, we investigated a group of patients with sporadic ALS and an ALS mouse model with superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1)/G93A transgenes using nerve excitability tests (NETs) to investigate axonal membrane properties and chemical precipitation, followed by ELISA analysis to measure plasma misfolded protein levels.

Background: The ongoing, observational BICSTaR (BICtegravir Single Tablet Regimen) cohort study is evaluating real-world effectiveness and safety of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (B/F/TAF) in people with HIV across 14 countries over 24 months. We present 12-month data from the BICSTaR Asia cohort.

Methods: Data were pooled from retrospective and prospective cohorts of antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve (hereafter, TN) and ART-experienced (hereafter, TE) people with HIV (aged ≥21 years) receiving B/F/TAF in routine clinical care in the Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how long psoriasis patients remain in drug-free remission after stopping biologics, as relapses often necessitate restarting systemic treatments.
  • - Researchers followed 42 patients treated with various trial biologics, finding that 90.5% experienced relapses within a follow-up period of 96 to 227 weeks, with a median drug-free remission of 104 days.
  • - Significant factors influencing relapse included age and disease duration, leading to the development of a risk model to predict relapse based on these variables and the type of biologic used.

Mitigation measures aimed at curbing the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 effectively suppressed the occurrence of many respiratory infections other than coronavirus disease 2019. Several infections experienced a resurgence following the relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions, surpassing pre-pandemic levels in Taiwan. This phenomenon, known as immune debt, primarily affected respiratory infections in young children, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection.
