Article Synopsis
  • Malnutrition is a frequent issue in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) undergoing targeted therapy and chemotherapy, leading to increased toxicity and lower survival rates.
  • This study analyzed data from 758 patients treated with cetuximab and chemotherapy, separating them into groups that did or did not receive supplemental home parenteral nutrition (HPN).
  • Results showed that the HPN group had higher rates of successful surgeries, longer treatment durations, and improved overall and progression-free survival compared to the non-HPN group, suggesting HPN may enhance treatment outcomes for certain mCRC patients.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is one of the most severe neurological disorders, with a high mortality rate and severe disabling functional sequelae. Systemic inflammation following hemorrhagic stroke may play an important role in mediating intracranial and extracranial tissue damage. Previous studies showed that various systemic inflammatory biomarkers might be useful in predicting clinical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed 242 advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with EGFR mutations who progressed after initial treatment with EGFR-TKIs to identify factors influencing overall survival and progression-free survival during second-line therapy.
  • - Results indicated that specific factors, such as being male, having more severe symptoms (ECOG ≥ 2), and certain treatment choices, negatively affected patient outcomes, while second-line treatment with osimertinib significantly improved overall survival compared to other options.
  • - The study concluded that conducting aggressive re-biopsies after the first-line treatment could lead to better-tailored second-line therapies, ultimately improving patient outcomes for those who experience disease progression.

Electronic address:

Background: Previous epidemiological researchers have used various algorithms to identify a second hip fracture; however, there has been no validation of these algorithms to date. This study aimed to verify existing algorithms for identifying second hip fracture under the International Classification of Diseases diagnostic coding systems. Furthermore, we examined the validity of two newly proposed algorithms that integrated the concept of periprosthetic fractures and laterality of the ICD-10 coding system.

Background And Objectives: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a syndrome of a hereditary neurodegenerative condition affecting the peripheral nervous system and is a single gene disorder. Deep phenotyping coupled with advanced genetic techniques is critical in discovering new genetic defects of rare genetic disorders such as CMT.

Methods: We applied multidisciplinary investigations to examine the neurophysiology and nerve pathology in a family that fulfilled the diagnosis of CMT2.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between brain imaging signatures and neurological deficits in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
  • The researchers used MRI to analyze gray matter volume and various white matter properties in 39 ALS patients and 32 control subjects.
  • Results showed that lower gray matter volume in a specific brain area correlated with muscle strength and nerve function, suggesting a concurrent impact on both upper and lower motor neurons in ALS.

Background: Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease that benefits from many newly developed anti-osteoporosis medications (AOMs). Reimbursement policies need to allocate medical budgets properly based on evidence-based data. This study aimed to investigate the 11-year secular trend, focusing on older age and males in this adjustment wave of the National Health Insurance reimbursement.

Purpose: To investigate the clinical features, management, and prognosis of full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs) inadvertently created during vitrectomy for eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and fibrovascular proliferation (FVP).

Methods: Eyes with PDR and FVP that had intraoperatively created FTMHs were retrospectively collected as the study group, and age- and sex-matched subjects with PDR and FVP who did not have intraoperative FTMHs were selected as the control group. Fundus abnormalities, optical coherence tomography (OCT) features, and anatomical and functional outcomes were compared between the two groups.

Benefits and Harms of COVID-19 Vaccines in Cardiovascular Disease: A Comprehensive Review.

J Lipid Atheroscler

May 2023

Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan.

Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) who contract coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) tend to have a worse prognosis and more severe cardiovascular side effects. COVID-19 vaccines, which are intended to prevent COVID-19, may also potentially reduce the severity and complications (including cardiovascular sequelae) of COVID-19, especially in patients with a history of CVD. However, there have also been reports of cardiovascular side effects from COVID-19 vaccines of various brands and types.

  • Adiponectin, a protein important for metabolism, is affected by DEHP, a chemical used in plastics, which lowers its levels in the body.
  • The study analyzed data from 699 Taiwanese individuals to explore the connection between DEHP metabolites, epigenetic markers, ACE gene variations, and adiponectin levels.
  • Results indicated that higher levels of DEHP metabolites corresponded with lower adiponectin, with significant interactions based on genetic factors, suggesting epigenetic changes influence this relationship.

Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a higher risk of incident and aggravating frailty over time. Frailty-initiating risk factors have been identified, but modulators of frail severity over time remain poorly defined. We aimed to explore the influences of glucose-lowering drug (GLD) strategy on DM patients' risk of increasing frail severity.

Background: The initial cardiac rhythm in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) portends different prognoses and affects treatment decisions. Initial shockable rhythms are associated with good survival and neurological outcomes but there is conflicting evidence for those who initially present with non-shockable rhythms. The aim of this study is to evaluate if OHCA with conversion from non-shockable (i.
