Article Synopsis
  • Melanoma in Taiwan is rare and primarily consists of acral and mucosal types, which differ from Western melanoma in behavior and genetics.
  • Taiwanese medical experts created a local clinical practice consensus guideline to address diagnosis, staging, and treatment based on local conditions and expert evaluations.
  • The guidelines emphasize surgical management (especially sentinel lymph node biopsies), require BRAF molecular testing before systemic treatment, and prioritize immunotherapy and targeted therapy for patients.

September 2023

Department of Pediatrics, National Taiwan University Hospital and College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Introduction: The life expectancy of Pompe disease patients has increased due to improved neonatal screening and enzyme replacement therapy. Nevertheless, the potential effect of frequent medical device exposure on pubertal development in these patients is not well understood, so further investigation is warranted.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the growth and puberty of nine Pompe disease patients.

Background: Single-dose benzathine penicillin G (BPG) is the preferred therapy for early syphilis, but poorer serologic responses have been observed among people with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH). No enhanced regimen has previously been shown to improve serologic outcomes of early syphilis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to compare the treatment responses to single-dose BPG combined with 7-day doxycycline versus BPG alone in PWH who presented with early syphilis.

Background: The superior effects of gastric bypass surgery in preventing cardiovascular diseases compared with sleeve gastrectomy are well-established. However, whether these effects are independent of weight loss is not known.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we compared the change in cardiometabolic risks of 1073 diabetic patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) (n = 265), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) (n = 619), and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) (n = 189) with equivalent weight loss from the Min-Shen General Hospital.

Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital and National Taiwan University College of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology, National Taiwan University College of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch, Yunlin, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: Antiretroviral regimens containing a second-generation integrase strand-transfer inhibitor (INSTI) plus 2 nucleos(t)ide reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are the recommended therapy for people with HIV (PWH) who are antiretroviral-naïve or on stable antiretroviral therapy (ART) with viral suppression. Real-world data on the virologic effectiveness of co-formulated bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF) among PWH with virologic failure while receiving other ART remain sparse.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of PWH who had viral rebound with plasma HIV RNA >1000 copies/mL and were switched to either dolutegravir combined with 2 NRTIs or BIC/FTC/TAF.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) have varied prognoses and require a risk-adapted treatment strategy for treatment optimization. Recently, a molecular prognostic model (Molecular International Prognostic Scoring System [IPSS-M]) that combines clinical parameters, cytogenetic abnormalities, and mutation topography was proposed. This study validated the IPSS-M in 649 patients with primary MDS (based on the 2022 International Consensus Classification [ICC]) and compared its prognostic power to those of the IPSS and revised IPSS (IPSS-R).

Pupillary light reflex (PLR) assessment is a crucial examination for evaluating brainstem function, particularly in patients with acute brain injury and neurosurgical conditions. The PLR is controlled by neural pathways modulated by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Altered PLR is a strong predictor of adverse outcomes after traumatic and ischemic brain injuries.

The aim of this randomized study was to investigate whether stripping massage (SM) of myofascial trigger points in the lower rhomboid muscle could alleviate chest pain in patients following thoracoscopic surgery. In addition, a literature review was conducted to assess the effectiveness of various pain management techniques. Sixty adult patients who reported a visual analog scale (VAS) score of 4 or higher were randomly assigned to receive conventional analgesics alone (conventional group) or combined with SM twice daily for 2 weeks (SM group).
