Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Frontier Research Center on Fundamental and Applied Sciences of Matters, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu 30013, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Fibrosis is an excessive accumulation of the extracellular matrix within solid organs in response to injury and a common pathway that leads functional failure. No clinically approved agent is available to reverse or even prevent this process. Herein, we report a nanotechnology-based approach that utilizes a drug carrier to deliver a therapeutic cargo specifically to fibrotic kidneys, thereby improving the antifibrotic effect of the drug and reducing systemic toxicity.

Background To mitigate uncertainty that may arise in the judgment of emergency medical technicians when relying on a prehospital stroke scale at the scene, we propose a hospital selection protocol that considers the uncertainty of a prehospital stroke scale and the actual door-to-treatment durations, and we have developed a web-based system to be used with mobile devices. Methods and Results This hospital selection protocol incorporates real-time, estimated transport time obtained from Google Maps, historical median door-to-treatment duration at hospitals that only provide the standard intravenous thrombolysis treatment, and at hospitals with endovascular thrombectomy for probable large-vessel occlusion cases. We have validated the efficiency of the proposed protocol and compared it with other strategies used by emergency medical technicians when deciding on a receiving hospital.

Objective: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common type of secondary hypertension, and it is associated with a higher rate of cardiovascular complications. KCNJ5 somatic mutations have recently been identified in aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA), however their influence on vascular remodeling and injury is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between KCNJ5 somatic mutation status and vascular status.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between gut microbiome changes and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by analyzing fecal samples from 44 subjects (19 with AMI and 25 controls).
  • Findings show that certain bacteria were more abundant in AMI patients, while Selenomonadales were less so, suggesting significant microbiome differences associated with AMI.
  • The research indicates a potential new avenue for preventing and treating AMI by focusing on the role of specific gut bacteria and seleno-compounds.

Background: In studies of stage IV epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), <10% of patients underwent surgery; thus, the effect of surgery in these patients remains unclear. We investigated whether primary lung tumor resection could improve the survival of patients with stage IV EGFR-mutant NSCLC without progression after first-line EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) treatment.

Methods: This retrospective case-control study included patients treated with first-line EGFR-TKIs without progression on follow-up imaging.

Background: Prone positioning enables the redistribution of lung weight, leading to the improvement of gas exchange and respiratory mechanics. We aimed to evaluate whether the initial findings of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) on computed tomography (CT) are associated with the subsequent response to prone positioning in terms of oxygenation and 60-day mortality.

Methods: We retrospectively included patients who underwent prone positioning for moderate to severe ARDS from October 2014 to November 2020 at a medical center in Taiwan.

(1) Background: The role of using artificial intelligence (AI) with electrocardiograms (ECGs) for the diagnosis of significant coronary artery disease (CAD) is unknown. We first tested the hypothesis that using AI to read ECG could identify significant CAD and determine which vessel was obstructed. (2) Methods: We collected ECG data from a multi-center retrospective cohort with patients of significant CAD documented by invasive coronary angiography and control patients in Taiwan from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2020.

Tissue microenvironment dictates inflammation and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.

J Formos Med Assoc

June 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Electronic address:

The recent advance in treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has significantly improved the prognosis of RA patients. However, these novel therapies do not work well for all RA patients. The unmet need suggests that the current understanding about how inflammatory response arises and progresses in RA is limited.

Objectives: Synergistic combinations of daptomycin and β-lactam antibiotics are currently recommended for treatment of VRE bloodstream infection (BSI). The efficacy of these combinations is jeopardized by VRE inherently resistant to β-lactam antibiotics. The combination of daptomycin and fosfomycin is recommended as an alternative therapy for VRE BSI; however, clinical data to support use of this combination are lacking.

Although the negative impact of immunosuppression on survival in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) treated by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is well known, short-term outcomes such as successful weaning rate from ECMO and subgroups benefit most from ECMO remain to be determined. The aims of this study were (1) to identify the association between immunocompromised status and weaning from ECMO in patients of ARDS, and (2) to identify subgroups of immunocompromised patients who may benefit from ECMO. This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients who received ECMO for ARDS from 2010 to 2020.

Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) is a rare clinical condition characterized by the development of multiple smooth muscle-like nodules in the peritoneal or abdominal cavity. Here, we report a case of a patient who was diagnosed with LPD after laparoscopic myomectomy with power morcellation. Growing evidence has shown that LPD might develop after using power morcellation for hysterectomy or myomectomy, and this can worsen the prognosis if the spreading tissue contains malignancies, such as leiomyosarcoma.
