Background: Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is an important organ resource, especially in countries with low deceased donation rates. Strategies for expanding access to transplantation should be developed by identifying the modifiable factors. In this study, we evaluated these factors in the relatives of patients from both medical centers and dialysis clinics using questionnaires.

Background And Purpose: The NOTCH3 mutation is a common cause of hereditary cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and may be a cause of spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). The aim was to investigate the clinical/imaging features for identifying the NOTCH3-mutation-related ICH.
Methods: The study was based on a cohort of 749 CSVD patients in Taiwan who received next-generation sequencing of CSVD genes including NOTCH3.

Cecropins are a family of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are widely found in the innate immune system of Cecropia moths. Cecropins exhibit a broad spectrum of antimicrobial and anticancer activities. The structures of Cecropins are composed of 34-39 amino acids with an N-terminal amphipathic α-helix, an AGP hinge and a hydrophobic C-terminal α-helix.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common cancer with an increasing incidence worldwide. The implementation of a mass screening program has been proven effective in reducing the global burden of CRC, but its effectiveness is not ideal and some metabolic derangements and lifestyle factors were reported to be attributable for such a deficit. Implementing positive lifestyle intervention as primary prevention therefore becomes critical because colorectal carcinogenesis can be promoted by several lifestyle factors, such as a lack of physical activity.

Fibrosis is an excessive accumulation of the extracellular matrix within solid organs in response to injury and a common pathway that leads functional failure. No clinically approved agent is available to reverse or even prevent this process. Herein, we report a nanotechnology-based approach that utilizes a drug carrier to deliver a therapeutic cargo specifically to fibrotic kidneys, thereby improving the antifibrotic effect of the drug and reducing systemic toxicity.

This study aimed to evaluate whether quantitative analysis of wrist photoplethysmography (PPG) could detect atrial fibrillation (AF). Continuous electrocardiograms recorded using an electrophysiology recording system and PPG obtained using a wrist-worn smartwatch were simultaneously collected from patients undergoing catheter ablation or electrical cardioversion. PPG features were extracted from 10, 25, 40, and 80 heartbeats of the split segments.

Continuous blood pressure (BP) measurement is crucial for long-term cardiovascular monitoring, especially for prompt hypertension detection. However, most of the continuous BP measurements rely on the pulse transit time (PTT) from multiple-channel physiological acquisition systems that impede wearable applications. Recently, wearable and smart health electronics have become significant for next-generation personalized healthcare progress.

Nail psoriasis significantly impacts the quality of life in patients with psoriasis, which affects approximately 2-3% of the population worldwide. Disease severity measures are essential in guiding treatment and evaluation of therapeutic efficacy. However, due to subsidy, convenience and low costs of health care in Taiwan, doctor usually needs to manage nearly hundreds of patients in single outpatient clinic, leading to difficulty in performing complex assessment tools.

Purpose: In the phase III ADAURA trial, adjuvant treatment with osimertinib versus placebo, with/without prior adjuvant chemotherapy, resulted in a statistically significant and clinically meaningful disease-free survival benefit in completely resected stage IB-IIIA EGFR-mutated (EGFRm) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We report health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes from ADAURA.
Patients And Methods: Patients randomized 1:1 received oral osimertinib 80 mg or placebo for 3 years or until recurrence/discontinuation.

This study aimed to compare stent graft with balloon tamponade for ruptured dialysis access during percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. Patients over an 8-year period (2010-2018) were identified from a database of 11,609 procedures. The primary endpoint was target lesion primary patency at 12 months.

Twenty-one consecutive patients (21 eyes) having proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and fibrovascular proliferation (FVP) with optical coherence tomography (OCT) available before and after full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) formation were retrospectively reviewed. Four types of FTMH formation pathways in PDR were identified and were quite different from those in idiopathic conditions. The activity, severity and locations of FVP varied in PDR eyes destined to develop FTMHs.

Hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) is a well-established and common treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly in East Asia. However, HAIC is not recognized internationally. Although several trials have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of HAIC, evidence corroborating its overall survival (OS) benefits compared with standard treatments is insufficient.

Objectives: Substantial inconsistencies exist in current guidelines regarding recommendations of metformin usage with the administration of a contrast medium. We aimed to perform a meta-analysis to determine whether the risks of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) and lactic acidosis increase with metformin use in diabetic patients receiving a contrast medium.
Methods: Studies were retrieved from databases from inception to May 15, 2021.

Background: Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia and it is associated with a higher risk of mortality and morbidity. The goal of this study was to assess the correlation between physical activity (PA) and atrial high rate episodes (AHREs) detected by cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs).
Methods: We prospectively collected data from 81 patients from March 2017 to June 2019.

Introduction: Adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended in patients with resected stages II to IIIA (and select IB) NSCLC; however, recurrence rates are high. In the phase 3 ADAURA study (NCT02511106), osimertinib was found to have a clinically meaningful improvement in disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with resected stages IB to IIIA EGFR-mutated (EGFRm) NSCLC. Here, we report prespecified and exploratory analyses of adjuvant chemotherapy use and outcomes from ADAURA.

Background/purpose: Sport-specific adaptations of athlete's hearts are still under investigation. This study sought to 1) identify athlete groups with similar characteristics by clustering echocardiographic data; 2) externally validate the data-driven clusters with sport classifications of various dynamic or static loads to support the conventional hypothesis-driven approach in delineating the athlete's heart.
Methods: Anthropometric, echocardiographic and electrocardiographic assessments were collected during the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taiwan.

The global spread of antibiotic-resistant infections has meant that there is an urgent need to develop new antimicrobial alternatives. In this study, we developed a strategy to boost and/or synergize the activity of conventional antibiotics by combination with antimicrobial peptides tagged with the bulky non-natural amino acid β-naphthylalanine (Nal) to their N- or C-terminus. A checkerboard method was used to evaluate synergistic effects of the parent peptide and the Nal-tagged peptides.

Here, we summarize the initial results from the ADAURA clinical study looking at treatment with osimertinib in patients with a specific type of non-small cell lung cancer (also called NSCLC). Osimertinib (TAGRISSO®) is a medication used to treat a type of NSCLC with a change (mutation) in the EGFR gene, known as EGFR-mutated NSCLC. EGFR stands for 'epidermal growth factor receptor'.
