According to the theory of coordinated reset (CR) stimulation, multifocal bursts of stimuli delivered in a random order with a specific interval may reduce the resonance power of the oscillatory generator in the epicenter. We develop a noninvasive coordinated multifocal burst stimulation (COMBS) with three repetitive transcranial stimulation machines based on CR theory to modulate the target frequency in the primary motor cortex and to assess its effect on motor cortical excitability in separate experiments. Electroencephalography and electromyography were recorded in 16 healthy participants during a finger-tapping task, both before and after the intervention.

Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is more common in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis than in the general population. Critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most severe form of PAD, is associated with high amputation and mortality risk. However, few prospective studies are available evaluating this disease's presentation, risk factors and outcomes for patients receiving hemodialysis.

Background: MRI is crucial in diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIO) are liver-specific contrast agents which enhance lesions in T -weighted images. Iron oxide nano-particle m-PEG-silane (IOP) Injection, a newly developed SPIO, showed promising imaging effects and good safety profile in preclinical studies and in phase I clinical trial.

Background: Travel, especially international travel, has become one of the most popular leisure activities in the world. The risk of accidents and travel-related illnesses, including infectious and non-communicable diseases, should not be neglected. To provide a more comprehensive pre-travel consultation to international travelers, this study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of travelers about travel health insurance.

Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is the gold standard for tissue characterization in routine pathological diagnoses. However, these visible light dyes do not exclusively label the nuclei and cytoplasm, making clear-cut segmentation of staining signals challenging. Currently, fluorescent staining technology is much more common in clinical research for analyzing tissue morphology and protein distribution owing to its advantages of channel independence, multiplex labeling, and the possibility of enabling 3D tissue labeling.

Adolescents and children play an important role in SARS-CoV-2 transmission and epidemiology. MVC-COV1901 is a subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccine based on stabilized spike protein adjuvanted with CpG 1018 and aluminum hydroxide that has received emergency use approval (EUA) for adults in Taiwan. In this study, we have investigated the safety and immunogenicity of two doses of MVC-COV1901 in adolescents.

Sleep disturbance in adults with untreated primary brain tumors: prevalence and impact on quality of life.

Sleep Biol Rhythms

April 2023

School of Nursing, College of Nursing, Taipei Medical University, No. 250, Wuxing St., Xinyi Dist., Taipei City, 110 Taiwan.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed high rates of insomnia (59.2%), poor sleep quality (77.7%), and circadian rhythm disruptions in the participants, with insomnia being the only sleep issue significantly linked to lower quality of life.
  • * The findings suggest that addressing sleep disturbances could enhance life quality for patients with brain tumors, highlighting the need for targeted healthcare interventions.

Background: Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is one of the major complications of allogenic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The manifestation of ocular GVHD (oGVHD) is variable and may involve cornea, lacrimal gland, conjunctiva, eyelid, and/or nasolacrimal duct. We reviewed and summarized the current managements of oGVHD with specific focus on the emerging therapeutic advances.

Electronic address:

Background: Myostatin is a negative regulator of skeletal muscle and myocardial mass. The relationship between myocardial ischemia and scar burden and levels of myostatin has not been established.

Methods: We enrolled symptomatic patients with heart failure (HF) with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 45 % and controls (LVEF ≥ 45 %).

Cross-protective humoral immunity to coronaviruses from SARS coronavirus 2-naïve sera of children with Kawasaki disease.

Clin Microbiol Infect

February 2023

Institute of Molecular and Genomic Medicine, National Health Research Institutes, Zhunan Town, Miaoli County, Taiwan; Paediatrics, En Chu Kong Hospital, Sanxia District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Objectives: SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-associated multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children indicates that viruses can trigger a Kawasaki disease (KD)-like hyperinflammation. A plausible hypothesis was that coronavirus-specific 'holes' in humoral immunity could cause both diseases.

Methods: To determine whether SARS-CoV-2-naïve patients with KD have inferior humoral immunity for the novel coronavirus, sera of children with KD and control children from year 2015 to 2021 were subjected to ELISA, microwestern, and neutralization assays to evaluate the capabilities in recognizing the receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV-2, spotting spike proteins of three respiratory syndromic coronaviruses, and blocking SARS-CoV-2 from binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors in vitro, respectively.

After kidney transplantation, patients exhibit a poor response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination. However, the efficacy and adverse effects of vaccines based on different platforms in these patients remain unclear. We prospectively analyzed both anti-spike protein antibody and cellular responses 1 month after the first and second doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in 171 kidney transplant patients.

Background: Methods synthesizing multiple data sources without prospective datasets have been proposed for absolute risk model development. This study proposed methods for adapting risk models for another population without prospective cohorts, which would help alleviate the health disparities caused by advances in absolute risk models. To exemplify, we adapted the lung cancer risk model PLCOM2012, well studied in the west, for Taiwan.

Abdominal or pelvic radiotherapy (RT) often results in small intestinal injury, such as apoptosis of epithelial cells and shortening of the villi. Atorvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitor, has many biological effects including cholesterol reduction, protection from cell damage, and autophagy activation. To reduce the extent of radiotherapy- (RT-) induced enteritis, we investigated the protective effects of atorvastatin against RT-induced damage of the intestinal tract.

Background: Cognitive impairment is a disabling non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). It remains uncertain whether declines in specific cognitive domains relate to imaging or plasma biomarkers across the disease continuum.

Objective: We investigated whether neuroimaging and plasma biomarkers correlate with individual task-specific cognitive domain declines evidenced by computerized neuropsychological tests in PD patients.

Pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) and islet cell microadenoma are exocrine and endocrine neoplasms of human pancreas that have been linked to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and neuroendocrine tumor, respectively. However, in health and at the surgical margin of pancreatic cancer, it remains unresolved how to simultaneously characterize duct and islet remodeling to investigate the exocrine-endocrine association in the lesion microenvironment. Here, we develop a new vibratome-based approach to detect, confirm, and analyze the two types of pancreas remodeling via stereo/three-dimensional (3-D) and classic/two-dimensional (2-D) histology.

Background: Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is an important organ resource, especially in countries with low deceased donation rates. Strategies for expanding access to transplantation should be developed by identifying the modifiable factors. In this study, we evaluated these factors in the relatives of patients from both medical centers and dialysis clinics using questionnaires.
