Autosomal recessive hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) type 2 (ARHR2) is a rare form of HR caused by variant of the gene encoding ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (). Our patient presented with a history of unsteady gait and progressively bowing legs that had commenced at the age of 1 year. Laboratory tests revealed an elevated level of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), hypophosphatemia, and a high urine phosphate level.

Transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS) has emerged as a promising neuromodulation technique that delivers acoustic energy with high spatial resolution for inducing long-term potentiation (LTP)- or depression (LTD)-like plasticity. The variability in the primary effects of tFUS-induced plasticity could be due to different stimulation patterns, such as intermittent versus continuous, and is an aspect that requires further detailed exploration. In this study, we developed a platform to evaluate the neuromodulatory effects of intermittent and continuous tFUS on motor cortical plasticity before and after tFUS application.

Background: The I-FEED classification, scored 0-8, was reported to accurately describe the clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal impairment after colorectal surgery. Therefore, it is interesting to determine whether the I-FEED scoring system is also applicable to patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery.
Methods: Adult patients undergoing elective lumbar spine surgery were enrolled, and the I-FEED score was measured for 4 days after surgery.

Objective: Evaluating pain in individuals with dementia can be difficult when verbal communication is limited. Vocalization has emerged as a potential avenue for assessments of pain in nonverbal populations. This study aimed to evaluate if physiological assessments of vocalization were correlated with observational assessments of pain during routine blood tests for persons with dementia.

Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders, and somatic symptom disorder (SSD) are associated with quality of life (QoL) reduction. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between these conditions as categorical diagnoses and related psychopathologies with QoL, recognizing their frequent overlap.
Methods: We recruited a total of 403 clinical patients and healthy individuals, administering diagnostic interviews based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene fusions are rare in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) but may serve as a therapeutic target. This study aims to evaluate the preoperative cytologic findings and clinicopathologic features of a series of eight ALK-rearranged PTCs from our pathology archives and consultations. All cases were confirmed by ALK D5F3 immunohistochemistry and six with additional targeted RNA-based next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Objective: Individuals with hyperthyroidism are at an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), but the association between autoantibodies and AF or cardiovascular mortality in individuals who have returned to normal thyroid function remains unclear.
Methods: The study utilized electronic medical records from National Taiwan University Hospital between 2000 and 2022. Each hyperthyroidism patient had at least 1 thyrotropin-binding inhibiting immunoglobulin (TBII) measurement.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among patients on hemodialysis, with approximately 40% of the cardiovascular deaths linked to acute coronary syndrome. We aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors of acute coronary syndrome in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Methods: Patients undergoing hemodialysis were prospectively enrolled from January 2018.

Background: Late recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after curative resection significantly influences long-term patient survival outcomes, and yet it remains understudied. This study aims to explore the risk factors and patterns of late recurrence and predictors of subsequent outcome.
Methods: This single-center retrospective study analyzed 1,701 consecutive patients who achieved a disease-free survival period exceeding 2 years after curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma between 2001 and 2018.

Background: Afatinib, an irreversible ErbB family inhibitor, is widely used as first-line treatment in advanced lung adenocarcinoma patients harbouring mutant epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). With the advancements in next-generation sequencing (NGS), comprehensive research into the clinical impact of co-occurring genetic mutations and the molecular mechanisms of acquired resistance is required for afatinib users.
Materials: From January 2010 to December 2019, we enrolled patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma with mutations using afatinib as first-line treatment, and we retrospectively collected pre- and post-afatinib treatment specimens from these patients for NGS testing.

Background: Patients with hematological malignancies (HM) were at a high risk of developing severe disease from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to assess the clinical outcome of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients with HM.
Methods: Adult patients with HM who were hospitalized with a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 between May, 2021 and November, 2022 were retrospectively identified.

Purpose: This study seeks to build a normative database for the vessel density of the superficial retina (SVD) and evaluate how changes and trends in the retinal microvasculature may be influenced by age and axial length (AL) in non-glaucomatous eyes, as measured with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
Methods: We included 500 eyes of 290 healthy subjects visiting a county hospital. Each participant underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examinations and OCTA to measure the SVD and thickness of the macular and peripapillary areas.

Ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and home blood pressure (HBP) monitoring is currently recommended for management of hypertension. Nonetheless, traditional HBP protocols could overlook diurnal fluctuations, which could also be linked with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. In this observational study, we studied among a group of treated hypertensive patients (N = 62, age: 52.

Objectives: Postoperative neurocognitive disorder following thoracoscopic surgery with general anaesthesia may be linked to reduced intraoperative cerebral oxygenation and perioperative inflammation, which can potentially be exacerbated by mechanical ventilation. However, nonintubated thoracoscopic surgery, which utilizes regional anaesthesia and maintains spontaneous breathing, provides a unique model for studying the potential benefits of avoiding mechanical ventilation. This approach allows investigation into the impact on perioperative neurocognitive profiles, inflammatory responses and intraoperative cerebral oxygen levels.

Neural regulation of hepatic metabolism has long been recognized. However, the detailed afferent and efferent innervation of the human liver has not been systematically characterized. This is largely due to the liver's high lipid and pigment contents, causing false-negative (light scattering and absorption) and false-positive (autofluorescence) results in in-depth fluorescence imaging.
