The field of designing artificial metalloproteins has yet to effectively tackle the incorporation of multimetal clusters, which is a key component of natural metalloproteins, such as metallothioneins (MTs) and calmodulin. MT is a physiological, essential, cysteine-rich metalloprotein that binds to a variety of metals but is only known to form metal-thiolate clusters with Cd, Zn, and Cu. Bismuth is a xenobiotic metal and a component of metallodrugs used to treat gastric ulcers and cancer, as well as an emerging metal used in industrial practices.

Improving the quality of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is highly imperative to stabilize the Li-metal anodes for the practical application of high-energy-density batteries. However, controllably managing the formation of robust SEI layers on the anode is challenging in state-of-the-art electrolytes. Herein, we discuss the role of dual additives fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and lithium difluorophosphate (LiPOF, LiPF) within the commercial electrolyte mixture (LiPF/EC/DEC) considering their reactivity with Li metal anodes using density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations.

In the search for rational design strategies for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, linking the catalyst structure to activity and stability is key. However, highly active catalysts such as IrO and RuO undergo structural changes under OER conditions, and hence, structure-activity-stability relationships need to take into account the operando structure of the catalyst. Under the highly anodic conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), electrocatalysts are often converted into an active form.

Fuel cells are considered potential energy conversion devices for utopia; nevertheless, finding a highly efficacious and economical electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great interest. By keeping this in view, we have proposed a novel design of a trimetallic nanocatalyst (NC) comprising atomic Pt clusters at the heterogeneous Ni(OH)-to-Pd interface (denoted NPP-70). The as-prepared material surpasses the commercial J.

Electrochemical stability and interfacial reactions are crucial for rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries. Electrolyte engineering with low-cost aqueous electrolytes is highly required to stabilize their interfacial reactions. Herein, we propose a design strategy using glutamic additive and its derivatives with modification of hydrogen-bonding network to enable Zn aqueous battery at a low concentration (2 m ZnSO + 1 m LiSO).

Using low-energy electron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the lattice and electronic structures of the Pb(111) surface upon the adsorption of Au atoms at the low temperature T = 40 K. Unlike earlier results showing the formation of PbAu-alloy layers at room temperature, we found that Au atoms form a ultra-thin superstructure, Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3, on top of the Pb(111) surface. Moreover, three surface-state bands, S, S, and S, are induced within and immediately adjacent to the Pb bulk projected band gap centered at the surface zone boundary [Formula: see text] at the energies of - 0.

Anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) have been extensively studied due to their intrinsic high energy and safety without a metallic Li anode in cell design. Yet, the dendrite and dead-Li buildup continuously consumes the active Li upon cycling, leading to the poor lifespan of AFLMBs. Here, we introduce lithium oxalate into the cathode as an electrode additive providing a Li reservoir to extend the lifespan of AFLMBs.

The search of novel quasi-1D materials is one of the important aspects in the field of material science. Toroidal moment, the order parameter of ferrotoroidic order, can be generated by a head-to-tail configuration of magnetic moment. It has been theoretically proposed that 1D dimerized and antiferromagnetic (AFM)-like spin chain hosts ferrotoroidicity and has the toroidal moment composed of only two antiparallel spins.

Lithium (Li) metal is the ultimate negative electrode due to its high theoretical specific capacity and low negative electrochemical potential. However, the handling of lithium metal imposes safety concerns in transportation and production due to its reactive nature. Recently, anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) have drawn much attention because of several of their advantages, including higher energy density, lower cost, and fewer safety concerns during cell production compared to LMBs.

Electrochemical CO reduction provides a promising strategy to product value-added fuels and chemical feedstocks. However, it remains a grand challenge to further reduce the overpotentials and increase current density for large-scale applications. Here, spontaneously Sn doped Bi/BiOx nanowires (denoted as Bi/Bi(Sn)O NWs) with a core-shell structure were synthesized by an electrochemical dealloying strategy.

Although high-entropy alloys have been intensively studied in the past decade, there are still many requirements for manufacturing processes and application directions to be proposed and developed, but most techniques are focused on high-entropy bulk materials and surface coatings. We fabricated high-entropy ceramic (HEC) nanomaterials using simple pulsed laser irradiation scanning on mixed salt solutions (PLMS method) under low-vacuum conditions. This method, allowing simple operation, rapid manufacturing, and low cost, is capable of using various metal salts as precursors and is also suitable for both flat and complicated 3D substrates.

3D morphology of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), crystallized in the presence of diluents of poly(1,3-trimethylene adipate) and poly(ethylene oxide), is probed using a novel approach coupled with selective etching. For interpreting the mechanisms of crystal periodic aggregation, various microscopic techniques and synchrotron microbeam X-ray analysis are used to observe the top surface in connection with the 3D crystal assemblies. Periodic grating architectures, with the cross-bar pitch exactly matching with the optical band spacing, are proved in banded PHB.

Using photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we have systematically investigated the behavior of polar organic molecule, chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc), adsorbed in the Cl-down configuration on the Ag(111) substrate at low temperature - 195 °C under UV irradiation with a range of different photon fluxes. Judging from the evolution of photoemission spectral line shapes of molecular energy states, we discovered that the Cl atoms are so robustly anchored at Ag(111) that the impinging photons cannot flip the ClAlPc molecules, but instead they crouch them down due to radiation pressure; we observe that the phthalocyanine (Pc) lobes bend down to interact with Ag atoms on the substrate and induce charge transfer from them. As photon flux is increased, radiation pressure on the Pc plane initiates tunneling of the Cl atom through the molecular plane to turn the adsorption configuration of ClAlPc from Cl-down to an upheld Cl-up configuration, elucidating an optomechanical way of manipulating the dipole direction of polar molecules.

We report the stimulating effects of interfacial charge transfer process between spherical Ag nanoparticles and shuttlecock-shaped ZnO nanostructures observed by UV-visible spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In specific, ZnO nanorods and shuttlecock-shaped ZnO/Ag nanostructures were developed using a simple chemical colloidal method and characterized for structural variations using XRD. The observed red shift in plasmonic peak and the increase in Urbach energy signify interfacial interactions and increased randomness in the hybrid ZnO/Ag nanostructures.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S-cPAN) has been recognized as a particularly promising cathode material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries due to its ultra-stable cycling performance and high degree of sulfur utilization. Though the synthetic conditions and routes for modification of S-cPAN have been extensively studied, details of the molecular structure of S-cPAN remain yet unclear. Herein, a more reasonable molecular structure consisting of pyridinic/pyrrolic nitrogen (N/N) is proposed, based on the analysis of combined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, C/N solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional theory data.

Anode-free lithium metal batteries are the most promising candidate to outperform lithium metal batteries due to higher energy density and reduced safety hazards with the absence of metallic lithium anode during initial cell fabrication. In general, researchers report capacity retention, reversible capacity, or rate capability of the cells to study the electrochemical performance of anode-free lithium metal batteries. However, evaluating the behavior of batteries from limited aspects may easily overlook other information hidden deep inside the meretricious results or even lead to misguided data interpretation.
