Neoadjuvant therapy followed by radical surgery is standard for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). However, compared to younger patients, elderly patients often had multiple commodities and may refuse surgery due to being medically unfit or the high risk of operative mortality. This study aims to explore the effects of surgery on short- and long-term mortality in elderly LARC patients using a nationwide cancer registry.

Microscopic vascular invasion (MVI) has been demonstrated as a strong risk factor associated with tumor recurrence and poor overall survival among hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after resection, but the preoperative prediction of MVI is still challenging. We aimed to build and validate a novel model to predict MVI in the preoperative setting. We retrospectively collected 857 patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage 0 or A HCC who underwent primary resection at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Hospital between January 2001 and June 2016.

In 2023, a new nomenclature, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), replaced the term non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). With the global rise in MASLD prevalence, concurrent MASLD and chronic hepatitis B (CHB)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are becoming increasingly common. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical impact of concurrent MASLD on long-term survival outcomes in patients with CHB-related early-stage HCC following curative resection.

Electrochemical binders used to immobilize electrocatalysts on electrodes are essential in all fields of electrochemistry. However, conventional organic-based binders like Nafion generally suffer from oxidative decomposition at high potentials on anodic electrodes and have high charge transport resistivity. This work proposes the use of acidic redox-assisted deposition to form cobalt manganese oxyhydroxides (CMOH) as a solid-state inorganic binder.

Inorganic arsenic (iAs)-induced urothelial carcinoma (UC) develops into a poor-prognosis malignancy. Arsenic-induced oxidative stress contributes to circadian rhythm disruption altered metabolism. Glutamine anaplerosis is a common metabolic feature of rapidly proliferating malignant cells, in which glutaminase (GLS) is a key enzyme in this process.

Mg-doped CdO NPs are synthesized co-precipitation, and their composition, structure, and elemental distribution are analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), along with optical characterization and impedance analysis. Doping with Mg changes the morphology from rod-like to quasi-spherical, reduces the crystallite size, and impacts their structural and functional properties.

A new species, , is described based on 18 specimens collected from Daxi Creek (Yilan) and Babian Creek (Taitung) in Taiwan. The new species is characterized by having a yellowish body with scattered spots on the sides, a black blotch on the caudal fin, the absence of free pectoral-fin rays, and more than 40 vertebrae. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: AAA distance (anus to anal-fin origin) shorter than twice the body depth at anus, 4.

The chemical screening of an octocoral identifed as has led to the isolation of five chlorinated briarane-type diterpenoids, including three known metabolites, gemmacolide X (1), frajunolide I (2), and fragilide F (3), along with two new analogs, 12α-acetoxyfragilide F (4) and 12α-acetoxyjunceellin (5). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was carried out to determine the absolute configurations of 1 and 2, while the structures of new compounds 4 and 5 were ascertained with 2D NMR experiments. Briaranes 1 and 3-5 were active in enhancing alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity.

Background: Long-term monitoring is needed to understand the statuses and trends of wildlife communities in montane forests, such as those in Yushan National Park (YSNP), Taiwan. Integrating passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) with an automated sound identifier, a long-term biodiversity monitoring project containing six PAM stations, was launched in YSNP in January 2020 and is currently ongoing. SILIC, an automated wildlife sound identification model, was used to extract sounds and species information from the recordings collected.

One-carbon metabolism plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis as it supplies the one-carbon units necessary for nucleotide synthesis, epigenetic regulation, and redox metabolism, ensuring the rapid proliferation of cancer cells. However, their roles in prostate cancer progression remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the association between genetic variants in the one-carbon metabolism pathway and clinical outcomes in patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer.

The KSO-mediated generation of -iminoquinone contributed to the regioselective substitution of isoquinolin-5,8-dione. This hydroxyl group-guided substitution was also applied to selected heterocycles and addressed the regioselectivity issue of quinones. This study has provided an expeditious pathway from isoquinolin-5-ol (5) to ellipticine (1) and isoellipticine (2), which benefits the comprehensive comparison of their activity.

However, limitations hinder its widespread adoption in solar energy harvesting, comprising the band gapless in the molecular orbital of graphene lattice, its vulnerability to oxidation in oxidative environments, and specific toxic properties that require careful consideration during development. Beyond current challenges, researchers have explored doping graphene with ionic liquids to raise the lifespan of solar cells (SCs).

A rare spiny-scale pricklefish, Kotlyar, 1981, is redescribed based on four specimens collected from Taiwan. Their sampling locality represents the northernmost record of the family, which extends the family's distribution from the eastern Indian Ocean and the South China Sea to northeastern Taiwan in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. A detailed description of these specimens and the first description of its sagittal otoliths are provided.

A simple and novel method is proposed for preparation of water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots), which have potential to be applied in detecting reactive oxygen species (ROS). The C-dots with high fluorescence quantum yield were created by hydrothermal methods with lactose as the carbon source and tris(hydroxylmethyl)aminomethane (Tris) as the surface passivation reagent. The C-dots have some unique characteristics such as excellent biocompatibility with a broad pH working range of 5-11 and high fluorescence, which makes them especially useful in the bio-detection field.

Over decades of research on photoluminescence (PL) of silicon quantum dots (Si-QDs), extensive exploratory experiments have been conducted to find ways to improve the photoluminescence quantum yield. However, the complete physical picture of Si-QD luminescence is not yet clear and needs to be studied in depth. In this work, which considers the quantum size effect and surface effect, the optical properties of Si-QDs with different sizes and surface terminated ligands were calculated based on first principles calculations.

Owing to its inertness toward refractory organic pollutants and the release of Mn, the use of permanganate was limited in soil and groundwater remediation. The present study proposed an improvement strategy based on glucose-derived carbonaceous materials, which enhanced the potential of permanganate degrading organic pollutants. The glucose-derived carbonaceous material with 1000 °C charring temperature was named C1000, which was exploited in activating KMnO for the elimination of refractory organic contaminants.

Chemical composition screening of an octocoral identified as species led to the isolation of a novel diterpenoid, sinulariaone A (1), featuring a 13-membered carbocyclic skeleton. The structure of 1 was established by spectroscopic elucidation, computed calculation, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of chlorofurancembranoid B (2), obtained in our previous study from the same octocoral species, was reported for the first time to demonstrate the absolute configuration.
