Here, we employed a fluorescence-based single molecule method called nuclease-induced stepwise photodropping (NISP) to measure in real time the DNA degradation mediated by mitochondrial genome maintenance exonuclease 1 (MGME1), a bidirectional single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-specific exonuclease. The method detects a stepwise decrease in fluorescence signals from Cy3 fluorophores labeled on an immobilized DNA substrate. Using NISP, we successfully determined the DNA degradation rates of 6.

Article Synopsis
  • Oxygen bubbles from seagrass during photosynthesis may create low-amplitude sounds, which we studied in seagrass beds in Taiwan.
  • These sounds occur in the morning, peak around midday, and fade by midafternoon, reaching frequencies between 1-4 kHz.
  • Factors like sunlight exposure and mechanical pressure can influence the pulse rate of these sounds, leading to the suggestion that they are caused by internal oxygen transport mechanisms in the plant rather than cavitation.

Electrochemical binders used to immobilize electrocatalysts on electrodes are essential in all fields of electrochemistry. However, conventional organic-based binders like Nafion generally suffer from oxidative decomposition at high potentials on anodic electrodes and have high charge transport resistivity. This work proposes the use of acidic redox-assisted deposition to form cobalt manganese oxyhydroxides (CMOH) as a solid-state inorganic binder.

Woman's breast cancer has always been among the top ten causes of cancer death, and nearly 2% to 5% of locally advanced breast cancers develop a fungating breast wound. Fungal breast cancer leads to skin ulcers, wound ruptures, and other bacterial infections in patients. Ursolic acid (UA), a natural pentacyclic triterpene compound, is widely distributed in many fruits.

In Vivo Effect of Halicin on Methicillin-Resistant -Infected and Its Clinical Potential.

Antibiotics (Basel)

September 2024

Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, College of Health Sciences, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung 807, Taiwan.

Recently, the high proportion of methicillin-resistant infections worldwide has highlighted the urgent need for novel antibiotics to combat this crisis. The recent progress in computational techniques for use in health and medicine, especially artificial intelligence (AI), has created new and potential approaches to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as repurposing existing drugs, optimizing current agents, and designing novel compounds. Halicin was previously used as a diabetic medication, acting as a c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK) inhibitor, and has recently demonstrated unexpected antibacterial activity.

Article Synopsis
  • An updated meta-analysis investigated the effects of intravenous iron supplementation on reducing red blood cell (RBC) transfusion risk in adult patients after cardiac surgery, incorporating recent data from 14 randomized controlled trials with a total of 2,043 subjects.
  • Results revealed that intravenous iron significantly decreased the likelihood of RBC transfusions (relative risk 0.77) and improved postoperative hemoglobin levels and iron status compared to control groups.
  • The findings suggest that integrating intravenous iron supplementation into perioperative care could enhance patient outcomes in blood management without increasing mortality risk.

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature extended excellent porosity properties and fully conjugated electronic systems, making them highly effective for several uses, including photocatalysis, dye adsorption, CO capture, supercapacitors, and so on. These polymers are known for their high specific surface area and adjustable porosity. To synthesize DHTP-CMPs (specifically TPE-DHTP CMP and Anthra-DHTP CMP) with abundant nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) adsorption sites and spherical structures, we employed a straightforward Schiff-base [4 + 2] condensation reaction.

Background: Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are currently the mainstay treatment for preventing thrombosis-induced ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or previous infarction. However, such management may potentially induce antithrombotic-associated intracranial hemorrhage, leading to significantly adverse clinical outcomes. To investigate the risk of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) in patients under therapeutic anticoagulation.

Nitrosamines and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are carcinogenic contaminants in water and biological matrices. Conventional analytical methods often struggle to detect trace concentrations due to poor extraction efficacies. This study presents a novel, low-cost, in-syringe-assisted fast extraction cum cleanup technique coupled with GC-FID for monitoring four nitrosamines and two SVOCs in drinking water and human urine samples to measure the contamination and exposure levels.

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, Min-Sheng General Hospital, Taoyuan.

Article Synopsis
  • Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the α-galactosidase A gene, leading to harmful buildup of glycosphingolipids in various tissues and classified into classic and late-onset phenotypes.
  • Classic phenotype shows severely reduced enzyme activity, resulting in a progressive disease with multi-organ issues, while late-onset often presents with milder symptoms and mainly affects the heart due to some remaining enzyme activity.
  • Early diagnosis through enzyme testing, imaging, and genotyping is crucial for effective treatment, which includes enzyme replacement therapy and new pharmacological options to prevent irreversible damage and optimize patient care based on genetic and gender considerations.

This study developed a dual-readout system utilizing fluorescence and colorimetry based on iron oxide quantum dots (IO-QDs) for detecting tetracycline (TCy). IO-QDs were synthesized within 6 h using L-leucine as a surface modifier, achieving a more efficient route. Upon interaction with TCy, IO-QDs exhibited a significant decrease in fluorescence response and observable color changes, while fluorescence lifetime remained consistent regardless of TCy presence.
