Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent pollutants in atmospheric particulate matter that are detrimental to human health. This study collected atmospheric particulate matter during and after the spring festival travel season in Tainan, Taiwan, from various locations and analyzed the carbon composition and PAH isomeric ratios to identify the sources. In this study, EPFR concentrations were measured using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, with the highest concentration found to be 3.

Electronic address:

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease, with tau pathology caused by abnormally activated dual-specificity tyrosine-phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) being one of the culprits. Coumestrol, a phytoestrogen and natural antioxidant found in various plants, has been reported to alleviate AD, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We confirmed coumestrol as a novel DYRK1A inhibitor through enzyme-based assays, X-ray crystallography, and cell line experiments.

Article Synopsis
  • Methane (CH) and nitrous oxide (NO) are potent greenhouse gases that can help address climate change and ozone formation, but their emissions from on-road transport are not well understood.
  • This study used roadside monitoring in Hong Kong to measure concentrations of CH, NO, and carbon monoxide (CO) in vehicle exhaust, employing Middle-Infrared Laser Absorption Spectroscopy and machine learning for vehicle identification.
  • Results showed that double-decker buses and LPG-fueled mini-buses had the highest emission factors, while overall, less than 8% of transport sector emissions in Hong Kong were from CH and NO, with most vehicles meeting emerging Euro 7 standards for non-CO₂ emissions.

Article Synopsis
  • Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is responsible for diseases like Kaposi's Sarcoma and has a high prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa, making vaccine development critical, but existing challenges include the absence of viable animal models for KSHV infection.
  • The study created a chimeric mouse virus (MHV68-K-K8.1) to mimic KSHV infection and tested two K8.1 vaccines (mRNA-LNP and Ferritin nanoparticles) which successfully stimulated immune responses in mice.
  • Results showed that mice vaccinated with K8.1 mRNA LNP vaccines had reduced viral levels and reactivation rates of the surrogate virus, indicating the potential effectiveness of these

Due to the significant increase in transportation, traditional fossil fuels utilised in internal combustion engines will only be accessible for a limited duration. Additionally, the harmful pollutants produced by these fuels, including CO, NO, unburned hydrocarbons, smoke, and a small amount of particulate matter, have a severe negative impact on the environment. Although biodiesel proves efficient without necessitating engine modifications, its performance is hindered by its higher viscosity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of a home-based TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) system designed for patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a condition that affects spinal flexibility and function.
  • Participants were split into two treatment groups (1-month and 2-month durations) to assess various health indicators like the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) and functional scores.
  • Results indicated improvements in functional scores after treatment, though scores worsened during a washout period, suggesting the TENS treatment may be beneficial for managing AS symptoms.

Objective: Multilevel airway surgery for obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSA) has benefits in improving sleep quality, but its effect on polysomnography (PSG) and 6-minute walk test (6MWT) parameters, including walking distance and cardiopulmonary performance, in patients with poor pre-operative cardiopulmonary performance remains understudied, which should be further investigated.

Methods: This prospective pilot study enrolled 27 consecutive OSA patients with poor pre-operative 6MWT results. All patients received multilevel OSA surgery, and the alterations of sleep parameters and 6MWT profiles were studied.

The brainstem region, locus coeruleus (LC), has been remarkably conserved across vertebrates. Evolution has woven the LC into wide-ranging neural circuits that influence functions as broad as autonomic systems, the stress response, nociception, sleep, and high-level cognition among others. Given this conservation, there is a strong possibility that LC activity is inherently similar across species, and furthermore that age, sex, and brain state influence LC activity similarly across species.

Fluoride contamination in groundwater has become a global environmental issue. Magnesium oxide (MgO) has demonstrated effectiveness as an adsorbent in treating fluoride pollution in groundwater. However, its use in powder and fine granular form often results in losses during the adsorption process, posing challenges for post-treatment recovery and potentially causing secondary environmental pollution.

Coral reefs are facing threats from a variety of global change stressors, including ocean warming, acidification, and deoxygenation. It has been hypothesized that growing corals near primary producers such as macroalgae or seagrass may help to ameliorate acidification and deoxygenation stress, however few studies have explored this effect in situ. Here, we investigated differences in coral growth rates across a natural gradient in seawater temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) variability in a nearshore seagrass bed on Dongsha Atoll, Taiwan, South China Sea.
