Division of Pharmacology and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Graduate Institute of Medicine, College of Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung City 80708, Taiwan.

Ferroptosis, a mode of cell death characterized by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation, has a substantial therapeutic potential for the treatment of various cancers. This study investigated the effects of trifluoperazine (TFP), an FDA-approved drug traditionally utilized for mental health disorder, on oral cancer cells, with a particular focus on the mechanisms involved in its potential anti-tumor properties. Our findings indicate that TFP significantly elevates the levels of lipid-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induces ferroptotic cell death in oral cancer cells through pathways involving autophagy, the SLC7A11/GPX4 axis, and mitochondrial damage.

Cervical spinal cord injury usually leads to cardiorespiratory dysfunction due to interruptions of the supraspinal pathways innervating the phrenic motoneurons and thoracic sympathetic preganglionic neurons. Although clinical guidelines recommend maintaining the mean arterial pressure within 85-90 mmHg during the first week of injury, there is no pre-clinical evidence from animal models to prove the therapeutic efficacy of hemodynamic management. Accordingly, the present study was designed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of hemodynamic management in rats with cervical spinal cord contusion.

This study reveals the mechanisms behind the ultralow lattice thermal conductivity κ in β-ZnSb single crystals through inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Analyzing phonon behaviors and the interaction between acoustic phonons and rattling modes, the first experimental evidence of avoided crossing in β-ZnSb is provided. The rattler-phonon avoided crossings contribute to the low κ in a β-ZnSb single crystal, enhancing the thermoelectric figure-of-merit (zT).

Background: Environmental exposure to arsenic has long been associated with various clinical and pathophysiological aspects of urothelial carcinoma (UC), although the role of arsenic in UC and its impact on circadian proteins, particularly BMAL-1, remains unestablished. Previous research suggests that arsenic upregulates Aurora kinase A (AURKA), subsequently inhibiting GSK-3β, which might lead to overexpression of BMAL-1; nevertheless, the underlying pathway and its clinical significance in UC with arsenic exposure have yet to be validated. This study focuses on two potential upstream regulators of BMAL-1, AURKA and GSK-3β.

This study explores the enhancement in magnetic and photoluminescence properties of Mn-doped (CdSe) nanoclusters, significantly influenced by the introduction of paramagnetic centers through doping, facilitated by optimized precursor chemistry and precisely controlled surface ligand interactions. Using a cost-effective and scalable synthesis approach with elemental Se and NaBH (Se-NaBH) in n-octylamine, we tailored bonding configurations (Cd-O, Cd-N, and Cd-Se) on the surface of nanoclusters, as confirmed by EXAFS analysis. These bonding configurations allowed for tunable Mn-doping with tetrahedral coordination, further stabilized by hydrogen-bonded acetate ligands, as evidenced by C NMR and IR spectroscopy.
