Cross-linking chitosan at room and subzero temperature using a series of diglycidyl ethers of glycols (DEs)-ethylene glycol (EGDE), 1,4-butanediol (BDDE), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGDE) has been investigated to demonstrate that DEs can be a more powerful alternative to glutaraldehyde (GA) for fabrication of biocompatible chitosan cryogels with tunable properties. Gelation of chitosan with DEs was significantly slower than with GA, allowing formation of cryogels with larger pores and higher permeability, more suitable for flow-through applications and cell culturing. Increased hydration of the cross-links with increased DE chain length weakened intermolecular hydrogen bonding in chitosan and improved cryogel elasticity.

Ten new decalin polyketides, zosteropenilline M (), 11--8-hydroxyzosteropenilline M (), zosteropenilline N (), 8-hydroxyzosteropenilline G (), zosteropenilline O (), zosteropenilline P (), zosteropenilline Q (), 13-dehydroxypallidopenilline A (), zosteropenilline R () and zosteropenilline S (), together with known zosteropenillines G () and J (), pallidopenilline A () and 1-acetylpallidopenilline A (), were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the fungus KMM 4679 associated with the seagrass . The structures of isolated compounds were established based on spectroscopic methods. The absolute configurations of zosteropenilline Q () and zosteropenilline S () were determined using a combination of the modified Mosher's method and ROESY data.

The symbiotic relationships between coral animal host and autotrophic dinoflagellates are based on the mutual exchange and tight control of nutritional inputs supporting successful growth. The corals Sinularia heterospiculata and Acropora aspera were cultivated using a flow-through circulation system supplying seawater during cold and warm seasons of the year, then sorted into host cells and symbionts and subjected to phylogenetic, morphological, and advanced lipid analyses. Here we show, that the lipidomes of the dinoflagellates Cladocopium C1/C3 and acroporide-specific Cladocopium hosted by the corals, are determined by lipidomic features of different thermosensitivity and unique betaine- and phospholipid molecular species.

Rotenone, as a common pesticide and insecticide frequently found in environmental samples, may be present in aquatic habitats worldwide. Exposure to low concentrations of this compound may cause alterations in the nervous system, thus contributing to Parkinsonian motor symptoms in both vertebrates and invertebrates. However, the effects of chronic exposure to low doses of rotenone on the activity of neurotransmitters that govern motor functions and on the specific molecular mechanisms leading to movement morbidity remain largely unknown for many aquatic invertebrates.

Based on the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of specimens taken from two mussel species ( and ), an investigation was performed by means of the complex approaches of the genomics, molecular phylogenetics, and evolutionary genetics. The mitogenome structure of studied mussels, like in many other invertebrates, appears to be much more variable than in vertebrates and includes changing gene order, duplications, and deletions, which were most frequent for tRNA genes; the mussel species' mitogenomes also have variable sizes. The results demonstrate some of the very important properties of protein polypeptides, such as hydrophobicity and its determination by the purine and pyrimidine nucleotide ratio.

Samples of the holothurian (Djakonov & Baranova in Djakonov, Baranova & Saveljeva, 1958) from the Sea of Japan were studied and the relationships of the genera and , as well as related taxa, were evaluated on the basis of phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial DNA COI and 16S rRNA genes. Using three methods, phylogenetic trees were constructed, and the degree of reliability of topological reconstructions was estimated by means of a nonparametric bootstrap test for the neighbor joining (NJ) and maximum likelihood (ML) techniques, as well as by a posteriori probability for Bayesian inference (BI) analysis. Genetic data confirm the validity of the assignment of to the genus Deichmann, 1938.

Currently, the molecular signatures of these populations in homeostasis and repair in the vertebrate forebrain are being intensively studied. Outside the telencephalon, the regenerative plasticity of NSPCs and their biological significance have not yet been practically studied.

In adult fish, neurogenesis occurs in many areas of the brain, including the cerebellum, with the ratio of newly formed cells relative to the total number of brain cells being several orders of magnitude greater than in mammals. Our study aimed to compare the expressions of aromatase B (AroB), glutamine synthetase (GS), and cystathionine-beta-synthase (CBS) in the cerebellum of intact juvenile chum salmon, . Three new bibenzochromenones named phanogracilins A-C (-) were isolated from the crinoid . The structure of was established using X-ray crystallography as 5,5',6,6',8,8'-hexahydroxy-2,2'-dipropyl-4H,4'H-[7,9'-bibenzo[g]chromene]-4,4'-dione. This allowed us to assign reliably 2D NMR signals for compound and subsequently for its isomer that differed in the connecting position of two benzochromenone moieties (7,10' instead of 7,9'), and compound for that differed in the length of the aliphatic chain of one of the fragments.
