People's ability to critically assess cancer-related information is essential from a preventional and therapeutic, as well as a general democratic perspective. Such cancer literacy is not just about acquiring factual knowledge. It also involves the ability to analyze how the information is contextualized-how cancer is framed.

Purpose: The majority of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors (CAYACS) are at risk of late effects but may not receive long-term follow-up care for these. Here, we investigated (1) self-reported late effects, (2) long-term follow-up care, and (3) factors associated with receiving follow-up care in a population-based sample of Norwegian long-term CAYACS.
Methods: Survivors were identified by the Cancer Registry of Norway.

Electronic address:
Objective: To explore whether negative emotions expressed by adolescent cancer survivors during follow-up consultations were associated with potential late effects (persisting disease or treatment-related health problems).
Methods: We video-recorded 66 follow-up consultations between 10 pediatricians and 66 adolescent survivors of leukemia, lymphoma or stem-cell transplantations. In transcripts of the recordings, we identified utterances coded as both 1) expressions of negative emotions (VR-CoDES), and 2) late effect-related discussions.

Electronic address:
Purpose: Little is known about the emotional concerns expressed by adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients in consultations when a diagnosis of cancer is delivered. Here, we investigated the content of such concerns and how health care providers respond to them.
Method: We audio-recorded nine consultations with AYA cancer patients (ages: 12-25 years) at the time of diagnosis.

Purpose: Information about late effects is a prerequisite for survivors of childhood cancers to engage in self-management of their health. Yet, many lack such knowledge. This study investigated to what extent: (1) potential late effects were discussed with adolescent and young adult (AYA)-aged survivors (of pediatric cancer), and (2) information about late effects was provided by the pediatric oncologists (POs) during routine follow-up consultations.

Purpose: Factors associated with the long-term dental effects after chemotherapy for childhood malignancies have not been well described. The primary aims of this study were as follows: (1) to assess whether age at diagnosis and treatment-related factors are associated with dental defects in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and (2) to assess the survivors' annual expenses for dental treatment compared to reference data.
Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 111 Norwegian survivors of ALL diagnosed before the age of 16.

Aims: Among male cancer survivors, cisplatinum-based chemotherapy (CBCT) is associated with impaired left ventricle (LV) diastolic function, increased risk of metabolic syndrome, and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Comparable data in females are limited. The long-term effects of cisplatin on right ventricle (RV) function are unknown in both genders.

Background: There is a concern regarding long-term cognitive late effects after treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The present study assessed neuropsychological function in very long-term childhood ALL survivors treated with chemotherapy only. We also investigated associations between neurocognitive performance and individual treatment load.

Purpose: Patient-reported outcomes should ideally be adapted to the individual patient while maintaining comparability of scores across patients. This is achievable using computerized adaptive testing (CAT). The aim here was to develop an item bank for CAT measurement of the pain domain as measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire.

Objective: To explore practices regarding communication about emotional concerns in follow-up consultations with adolescent cancer survivors and pediatrician.
Method: Seven video-taped follow-up consultations with adolescent survivors which contained many examples of emotional cues and concern were analyzed according to principles of conversation analysis.
Results: During talk about emotional concerns, a task-focused asymmetric pattern of pediatrician questions and patient responses was most often upheld.

Background: Narcissism is a personality trait associated with both psychological health and resilience as well as with aggression and interpersonal problems.
Aim: This study compares levels of total narcissism and subscale scores in inpatients, outpatients and a community sample.
Methods: Inpatients (N = 186) were recruited from consecutively admitted patients to two closed units, and the outpatient group (N = 144) consisted of patients attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic.

Background: Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at risk for late cardiotoxic effects of cancer treatment, but conflicting evidence exists on the effects of anthracyclines on left ventricular (LV) diastolic function and exercise capacity.
Procedure: We performed a cross-sectional study with comprehensive echocardiography in 138 adult survivors of childhood ALL, median 23.4 years after diagnosis.

Purpose: By self-report and serum levels of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) this study aims to assess post-treatment fertility after modern treatment of women with malignant ovarian germ cell tumors (MOGCT).
Patients And Methods: In 2013 a questionnaire-based survey was performed in 61 MOGCT patients diagnosed at age <40years from 1980-2009. Forty-nine of them also attended the out-patient clinic.

Background: Patients with advanced cancer commonly experience multiple somatic symptoms and declining functioning. Some highly prevalent symptoms also overlap with diagnostic symptom-criteria of depression. Thus, assessing depression in these patients can be challenging.

Survivors of childhood lymphoma (CL) have markedly increased risk of developing heart failure. Echocardiographic studies after cardiotoxic treatment have primarily demonstrated left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction. In the present study, we hypothesized that longer follow-up and a more comprehensive echocardiographic examination would reveal more cardiac abnormalities.

Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic significance of age at diagnosis, extent of the disease (EOD) and socioeconomic (SES) and sociodemographic status (civil status, residency) on cause specific survival (CSS) in patients with malignant ovarian germ cell tumours (MOGCTs). To explore the cumulative incidence of a second cancer in 10-year MOGCT survivors.
Patients And Methods: 2541 patients with MOGCT, reported to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results programme (1978-2010), were identified.

Context: Prevalence rates of depression in patients with advanced cancer vary considerably. This may be because of heterogeneous samples and use of different assessment methods. Adequate sample descriptions and consistent use of measures are needed to be able to generalize research findings and apply them to clinical practice.

Context: The difficulties in defining a palliative care patient accentuate the need to provide stringent descriptions of the patient population in palliative care research.
Objectives: To conduct a systematic literature review with the aim of identifying which key variables have been used to describe adult palliative care cancer populations in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Methods: The data sources used were MEDLINE (1950 to January 25, 2010) and Embase (1980 to January 25, 2010), limited to RCTs in adult cancer patients with incurable disease.

Purpose: To quantify and compare survival in women with malignant ovarian germ cell tumors (MOGCTs) in Norway before and after the introduction of cisplatin-based chemotherapy (around 1980), and to explore the association between different types of treatment and the development of a second cancer.
Patients And Methods: We identified 351 patients diagnosed with MOGCTs from 1953 to 2009 in the Cancer Registry of Norway. Ovarian cancer-specific survival was calculated separately for patients diagnosed before and after 1980.
