Bio-fillers are intensively studied for advanced polymer composite circular design and production. In this context, the algal biomass may be considered an important and relatively low-cost resource, when harvested as a by-product from wastewater treatment plants. The biomass of the algal species is frequently used in this type of environmental process, and its macro constituents' composition ranges from around 15-25% carbohydrates, 10-20% lipids, and 50-60% proteins.

The preparation of polymer composites that incorporate material of a biogenic nature in the polymer matrices may lead to a reduction in fossil polymer consumption and a potentially higher biodegradability. Furthermore, microalgae biomass as biogenic filler has the advantage of fast growth and high tolerance to different types of culture media with higher production yields than those provided by the biomass of terrestrial crops. On the other hand, algal biomass can be a secondary product in wastewater treatment processes.

Azole compounds are utilized to combat fungal infections in plants to protect them and also used for treating mycosis in humans. Adsorption of toxic compounds from water using zeolites and magnetite was developed due to the various advantages of their applicability. In the last twenty years, the use of zeolite-based compositions in the form of zeolite/inorganic or zeolite/polymer and magnetite has been accelerated for the adsorption of emergent compounds from water sources. The current study aimed to determine the concentration levels of nine perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the five most significant Romanian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their transfer to natural receivers. The analytes were concentrated using a solid-phase extraction/ultrasonic-assisted extraction procedures and then selectively quantified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using electrospray ionization. In most of the wastewater samples investigated, the dominant compounds were perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctansulfonate acid (PFOS), with the maximum concentration range between 105 and 316 ng/L in influents, 14.

In the last decades, increased intakes of contaminants and the habitats' destruction have produced drastic changes in the aquatic ecosystems. The environmental contaminants can accumulate in aquatic organisms, leading to the disturbance of the antioxidant/prooxidant balance in fish. The paper presents the validation of an electrochemical procedure for on-site Hg ions determination in wastewater samples using a modified carbon screen-printed electrode (SPE) with a complexing polymeric film based on poly(2,2'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis((2-(azulen-2-ylamino)-2-oxoethyl)azanediyl))diacetic acid) (poly). Using metal ions accumulation in an open circuit followed by anodic stripping voltammetry, the SPE-poly electrode presents a linear range in the range of 20 µg/L to 150 µg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) = 6 µg/L, limit of quantification (LOQ) = 20 µg/L, and an average measurement uncertainty of 26% of mercury ions. The results obtained in situ and in the laboratory using the SPE-poly modified electrode were compared with those obtained by the atomic absorption spectrometry coupled with the cold vapor generation standardized method, with the average values indicating excellent recovery yields.

Amberlite IRA 402 strongly basic anion exchange resin in Cl− form (IRA 402 (Cl−) together with Amberlite XAD7HP acrylic ester co-polymer (XAD7HP) were functionalized with chelating agent Direct red 23 (DR 23). Mine water as a result of meteoric and/or underground water's contact with tailings and underground workings could have an elevated content of metals associated with sulfate, often acidic, due to the bio-oxidation of sulfides. When entering aquatic ecosystems, the mine water can cause significant changes in the species' trophic levels, therefore a treatment is required to adjust the alkalinity and to remove the heavy metals and metalloids. The conventional mine water treatment removes metals, but in many cases it does not reduce the sulfate content.

This research had two stages of development: during the first stage, the purpose of the research was to evaluate the adsorption properties of the natural polymer represented by shredded maize stalk (MS) and by Amberlite XAD7HP (XAD7HP) acrylic resin for removal of toxic diazo Acid Blue 113 (AB 113) dye from aqueous solutions. The AB 113 concentration was evaluated spectrometrically at 565 nm. In the second stage, the stability of MS loaded with AB 113 (MS-AB 113) and of XAD7HP loaded with AB 113 (XAD7HP-AB 113) in acidic medium suggests that impregnated materials can be used for selective removal of metal ions (Cr, Zn and Mn).
