Colanic acid (CA) is an exopolysaccharide found in . Recently, its ability to stimulate physical activity in mice and to prolong the lifespan of invertebrates has been described. In the current work, we use standard MTT assay, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry to describe CA action on several cell lines of different origins.

The search for relevant molecular targets is one of the main tasks of modern tumor chemotherapy. To successfully achieve this, it is necessary to have the most complete understanding of the functioning of a transcriptional apparatus of the cell, particularly related to proliferation. The p53 protein plays an important role in regulating processes such as apoptosis, repair, and cell division, and the loss of its functionality often accompanies various types of tumors and contributes to the development of chemoresistance.

A large number of experimental studies have demonstrated that globular proteins can be absorbed from the solution by both polycationic and polyanionic brushes when the net charge of protein globules is of the same or of the opposite sign with respect to that of brush-forming polyelectrolyte chains. Here, we overview the results of experimental studies on interactions between globular proteins and polycationic or polyanionic brushes, and present a self-consistent field theoretical model that allows us to account for the asymmetry of interactions of protein-like nanocolloid particles comprising weak (pH-sensitive) cationic and anionic groups with a positively or negatively charged polyelectrolyte brush. The position-dependent insertion free energy and the net charge of the particle are calculated.

Holographic interferometry is a well-established field of science and optical engineering. It has a half-century history of successful implementation as the solution to numerous technical tasks and problems. However, fast progress in digital and computer holography has promoted it to a new level of possibilities and has opened brand new fields of its application.

In 2010, an estimated 860 million people were living in slums worldwide, with around 60 million added to the slum population between 2000 and 2010. In 2011, 200 million people in urban Indian households were considered to live in slums. In order to address and create slum development programmes and poverty alleviation methods, it is necessary to understand the needs of these communities.

Thin bactericidal ZnO coatings prepared with the polymer-salt method are shown to be highly transparent in the visible. The spectral measurements and XRD analysis data show that coatings prepared are formed by ZnO nanoparticles ~ 10 nm in size. The coatings demonstrate the bactericidal effect against the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 209P and gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 bacteria both under the natural light and in the darkness.

Scale invariance analysis for genetic networks applying homogeneity.

Scalability is a property describing the change of the trajectory of a dynamical system under a scaling of the input stimulus and of the initial conditions. Particular cases of scalability include the scale invariance and fold change detection (when the scaling of the input does not influence the system output). In the present paper it is shown that homogeneous systems have this scalability property while locally homogeneous systems approximately possess this property.

Excessive migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) has been observed as a major factor contributing to the development of in-stent restenosis after coronary stenting. Building upon the results from in vivo experiments, we formulated a hypothesis that the speed of the initial tissue re-growth response is determined by the early migration of SMCs from the injured intima. To test this hypothesis, a cellular Potts model of the stented artery is developed where stent struts were deployed at different depths into the tissue.

Performance of distributed multiscale simulations.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

August 2014

Computer Science Department, University of Geneva, 1227 Carouge, Switzerland.

Multiscale simulations model phenomena across natural scales using monolithic or component-based code, running on local or distributed resources. In this work, we investigate the performance of distributed multiscale computing of component-based models, guided by six multiscale applications with different characteristics and from several disciplines. Three modes of distributed multiscale computing are identified: supplementing local dependencies with large-scale resources, load distribution over multiple resources, and load balancing of small- and large-scale resources.

Multiscale modelling and simulation: a position paper.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

August 2014

Centre for Computational Science, University College London, London, UK.

We argue that, despite the fact that the field of multiscale modelling and simulation has enjoyed significant success within the past decade, it still holds many open questions that are deemed important but so far have barely been explored. We believe that this is at least in part due to the fact that the field has been mainly developed within disciplinary silos. The principal topics that in our view would benefit from a targeted multidisciplinary research effort are related to reaching consensus as to what exactly one means by 'multiscale modelling', formulating a generic theory or calculus of multiscale modelling, applying such concepts to the urgent question of validation and verification of multiscale models, and the issue of numerical error propagation in multiscale models.

A framework for multi-scale modelling.

Department of Computational Science, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands National Research University ITMO, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

We review a methodology to design, implement and execute multi-scale and multi-science numerical simulations. We identify important ingredients of multi-scale modelling and give a precise definition of them. Our framework assumes that a multi-scale model can be formulated in terms of a collection of coupled single-scale submodels.

Compositional surface-layered sorbents for pre-concentration of organic substances in the air analysis.

We juxtapose methods of synthesis of non-polar surface-layered sorbents on the platform of a carrier, which combines macro-porous coarse-dispersed polytetrafluoroethylene with micro-dispersed activated carbon. Further, we present data about the sorption properties of the said materials alongside perspectives of their analytical applications. Our study established that with respect to efficacy of dynamic sorption from gaseous phases these sorbents outperform bulk-porous analogues in their normal, granular form.
