Biodegradable nanomaterials can significantly improve the safety profile of nanomedicine. Germanium nanoparticles (Ge NPs) with a safe biodegradation pathway are developed as efficient photothermal converters for biomedical applications. Ge NPs synthesized by femtosecond-laser ablation in liquids rapidly dissolve in physiological-like environment through the oxidation mechanism.

Nanoscale morphological features of branched processes of glial cells may be of decisive importance for neuron-astrocyte interactions in health and disease. The paper presents the results of a correlation analysis of images of thin processes of astrocytes in nervous tissue of the mouse brain, which were obtained by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with high spatial resolution. Samples were prepared and imaged using a unique hardware combination of ultramicrotomy and SPM.

Spatial-energy correlations strongly influence charge and exciton transport in weakly ordered media such as organic semiconductors and nanoparticle assemblies. Focusing on cases with shorter-range interparticle interactions, we develop a unified analytic approach that allows us to calculate the temperature and field dependence of charge carrier mobility in organic quadrupole glasses and the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of excitons in quantum dot solids. We obtain analytic expressions for the energy distribution of hopping centers, the characteristic escape time of charge/exciton from the energy well stemming from energy correlations around deep states, and the size of the well.

We present a study of the intermolecular interactions in van der Waals complexes of methane and neon dimers within the framework of the CCSD method. This approach was implemented and applied to calculate and examine the behavior of the contracted two-particle reduced density matrix (2-RDM). It was demonstrated that the region near the minimum of the two-particle density matrix correlation part, corresponding to the primary bulk of the Coulomb hole contribution, exerts a significant influence on the dispersion interaction energetics of the studied systems.

In this study, we present a novel and ultrasensitive magnetic lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) tailored for the precise detection of zearalenone, a mycotoxin with significant implications for human and animal health. A versatile and straightforward method for creating non-covalent magnetic labels is proposed and comprehensively compared with a covalent immobilization strategy. We employ the magnetic particle quantification (MPQ) technique for precise detection of the labels and characterization of their functionality, including measuring the antibody sorption density on the particle surface.

This paper describes a fast and flexible microfabrication method for thermal conductivity gas sensors useful in high-temperature applications. The key parts of the sensor, the microheater and the package, were fabricated from glass-coated platinum wire and the combination of laser micromilling (ablation) of already-sintered monolithic ceramic materials and thick-film screen-printing technologies. The final thermal conductivity gas sensor was fabricated in the form of a complete MEMS device in a metal ceramic package, which could be used as a compact miniaturized surface-mounted device for soldering to standard PCB.

Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) are highly favored materials for a wide range of applications, from smart composite materials and biosensors to targeted drug delivery. These multifunctional applications typically require the biofunctional coating of MNPs that involves various conjugation techniques to form stable MNP-biomolecule complexes. In this study, a cost-effective method is developed for the chlorostannate modification of MNP surfaces that provides efficient one-step conjugation with biomolecules.

Photonic crystals (PCs) are promising tools for label-free sensing in drug discovery screening, diagnostics, and analysis of ligand-receptor interactions. Imaging of PC surface modes has emerged as a novel approach to the detection of multiple binding events at the sensor surface. PC surface modification and decoration with recognition units yield an interface providing the highly sensitive detection of cancer biomarkers, antibodies, and oligonucleotides.

Biomolecular corona is the major obstacle to the clinical translation of nanomedicines. Since corona formation is governed by molecular interactions at the nano-bio interface, nanoparticle surface properties such as topography, charge and surface chemistry can be tuned to manipulate biomolecular corona formation. To this end, as the first step towards a deep understanding of the processes of corona formation, it is necessary to develop nanoparticles employing various biocompatible materials and characterize their surface structure and dynamics at the molecular level.

In December 2019, a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, was found to in Wuhan, China. Cases of infection were subsequently detected in other countries in a short period of time, resulting in the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020. Questions about the impact of herd immunity of pre-existing immune reactivity to SARS-CoV-2 on COVID-19 severity, associated with the immunity to seasonal manifestation, are still to be resolved and may be useful for understanding some processes that precede the emergence of a pandemic virus.

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino charged-current cross section on ^{127}I with pion decay-at-rest neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy (≤50 MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos of 9.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used in the biomedical industry. In this study, we developed a new method for obtaining a metal-organic structure of strontium and terephthalic acid, Sr(BDC), and an alternative activation method for removing DMF from the pores. Sr(BDC) MOFs were successfully prepared and characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, and SEM.

The recent data indicating the presence of local thermal gradients associated with the sites of high-rate thermogenesis, on the one hand, demonstrate the possibility for the existence of "thermal signaling" in a cell and, on the other, are criticized on the basis of thermodynamic calculations and models. Here, we review the main thermometric techniques and sensors developed for the determination of temperature inside living cells and diverse intracellular compartments.

The problem of modeling the mass peak shape of a quadrupole mass filter (QMF) with round rods is considered. A number of factors leading to the degradation of the mass peak shape are studied, namely, displacement of the electrodes with respect to their original position, changes in the diameter of the electrodes, and asymmetry of the supply potentials. Decomposition of the rod set field on multipole fields allows to obtain an analytical representation of the ion motion equations.

Nuclear medicine presents one of the most promising modalities for efficient non-invasive treatment of a variety of cancers, but the application of radionuclides in cancer therapy and diagnostics is severely limited by their nonspecific tissue accumulation and poor biocompatibility. Here, we explore the use of nanosized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as carriers of radionuclides to order to improve their delivery to tumour. To demonstrate the concept, we prepared polymer-coated MIL-101(Cr)-NHMOFs and conjugated them with clinically utilized radionuclideRe.

Polyelectrolyte capsules (PCs) are a promising tool for anticancer drug delivery and tumor targeting. Surface functionalization of PCs with antibodies is widely used for providing their specific interactions with cancer cells. The efficiency of PC-based targeted delivery systems can be affected by the cellular heterogeneity of the tumor, particularly by the presence of tumor-associated macrophages.

The acquisition of reliable knowledge about the mechanism of short laser pulse interactions with semiconductor materials is an important step for high-tech technologies towards the development of new electronic devices, the functionalization of material surfaces with predesigned optical properties, and the manufacturing of nanorobots (such as nanoparticles) for bio-medical applications. The laser-induced nanostructuring of semiconductors, however, is a complex phenomenon with several interplaying processes occurring on a wide spatial and temporal scale. In this work, we apply the atomistic-continuum approach for modeling the interaction of an fs-laser pulse with a semiconductor target, using monolithic crystalline silicon (c-Si) and porous silicon (Si).
