We studied the effects of single and combined action of protons and carbon ions C on the pool of MCF-7 human breast cancer stem cells. Single irradiation with a beam of protons or carbon ions had no significant effects on the relative number of cancer stem cells (CSC). The effects of combined irradiation in a total equieffective dose of 4 Gy depended on the sequence of exposure to ionizing radiations: the relative number of CSC did not change after irradiation with carbon ions and then with protons, but increased in the case of the reverse sequence.

Obesity is a significant risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Adipose tissue dysfunction can affect the pool of circulating exosomal miRNAs, driving concomitant disease in obesity. These exosomal miRNAs can reflect adipose tissue functionality, thus serving as prognostic biomarkers for disease monitoring in case of T2DM.

Heterochromatin and euchromatin form different spatial compartments in the interphase nucleus, with heterochromatin being localized mainly at the nuclear periphery. The mechanisms responsible for peripheral localization of heterochromatin are still not fully understood. The nuclear lamina and nuclear pore complexes were obvious candidates for the role of heterochromatin binders.

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is a yet unobserved nuclear process that would demonstrate Lepton number violation, a clear evidence of beyond standard model physics. The process two neutrino double beta decay (2νββ) is allowed by the standard model and has been measured in numerous experiments. In this Letter, we report a measurement of 2νββ decay half-life of ^{100}Mo to the ground state of ^{100}Ru of [7.

The anaerobic oxidation of fatty acids and alcohols occurs near the thermodynamic limit of life. This process is driven by syntrophic bacteria that oxidize fatty acids and/or alcohols, their syntrophic partners that consume the products of this oxidation, and the pathways for interspecies electron exchange via these products or direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). Due to the interdependence of syntrophic microorganisms on each other's metabolic activity, their isolation in pure cultures is almost impossible.

The genetic architecture of ischemic stroke (IS), which is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, is complex and underexplored. The traditional approach for associative gene mapping is genome-wide association studies (GWASs), testing individual single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the genomes of case and control groups. The purpose of this research is to develop an alternative approach in which groups of SNPs are examined rather than individual ones.

The potential of standard methods of radiation therapy is limited by the dose that can be safely delivered to the tumor, which could be too low for radical treatment. The dose efficiency can be increased by using radiosensitizers. In this study, we evaluated the sensitizing potential of biocompatible iron oxide nanoparticles coated with a dextran shell in A172 and Gl-Tr glioblastoma cells in vitro.

Formation of carbon propeller-like molecules (CPLMs) from starphenes on a graphene substrate under electron irradiation with about 100% yield is observed in molecular dynamics simulations using the REBO-1990EVC_CH potential and CompuTEM algorithm. A CPLM consists of three carbon atomic chains connected to the central hexagon and is formed as a result of the spontaneous breaking of bonds between zigzag atomic rows in starphene arms after hydrogen removal by electron impacts. In the absence of the substrate, the CPLM yield is slightly decreased due to sticking between forming chains, while the formation time is increased threefold.

Entomopathogenic bacteria of the genus Photorhabdus secrete protease S (PrtS), which is considered a virulence factor. We found that in the Photorhabdus genomes, immediately after the prtS genes, there are genes that encode small hypothetical proteins homologous to emfourin, a recently discovered protein inhibitor of metalloproteases. The gene of emfourin-like inhibitor from Photorhabdus laumondii subsp.

Inhibitors of human poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) are considered as promising agents for treatment of cardiovascular, neurological, and other diseases accompanied by inflammation and oxidative stress. Previously, the ability of natural compounds 7-methylguanine (7mGua) and 8-hydroxy-7-methylguanine (8h7mGua) to suppress activity of the recombinant PARP protein was demonstrated. In the present work, we have investigated the possibility of PARP-inhibitory and cytoprotective action of 7mGua and 8h7mGua against the rat cardiomyoblast cultures (undifferentiated and differentiated H9c2).
