Background: The burden of mental ill health in working-age populations has prompted research on possible links between work-related factors and mental ill health. Long working hours and night shift work are some of the factors that have been studied in relation to the risk of developing mental ill health. Yet, previous studies have not generated conclusive evidence, and further studies of high quality are needed.

Objectives: Previous studies indicated that stress diagnoses increase the risk of dementia. However, previous results may be biased by confounding, reverse causation and misclassification. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to investigate the association between clinically diagnosed stress in midlife and later dementia risk, while addressing limitations of previous studies.

Background: Prevention of sickness absence (SA) is a major public health challenge. Sufficient levels of physical activity may be an important protective factor. In contrast to the North European countries, little is known about physical activity behavior and its influence over SA in South European countries.

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing joint estimates of the work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO Joint Estimates). For this, systematic reviews of studies estimating the prevalence of exposure to selected occupational risk factors will be conducted to provide input data for estimations of the number of exposed workers. A critical part of systematic review methods is to assess risk of bias (RoB) of individual studies.

Birth weight for gestational age and the risk of infertility: a Danish cohort study.

Hum Reprod

January 2020

Research Unit for Epidemiology, Department of Public Health, Aarhus University, 8100 Aarhus C, Denmark.

Study Question: Is birth weight for gestational age associated with infertility in adulthood among men and women?

Summary Answer: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) was associated with infertility in adulthood among men.

What Is Known Already: Fetal growth restriction may affect fertility, but results from previous studies have been inconsistent.

Study Design, Size, Duration: In this population-based cohort study, we used data from a Danish birth cohort, including 5594 men and 5342 women born between 1984 and 1987.

Background: Previous research has suggested high levels of physical activity (PA), either in occupational or leisure-time, to be associated with low levels of perceived stress at work (PSW). However, because studies have been set in particular conditions, there is no possibility to generalize results on other populations of workers. This study investigated the association between PA and PSW in university workers.

Aim: To evaluate labour market outcomes in type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Methods: Individuals with type 1 (n = 431) and type 2 diabetes (n = 4047) were identified in Danish national registers from 1994 to 2011 and compared with individuals without diabetes (n = 101 295). Multi-state Cox proportional hazards analyses estimated hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for transitions between work, sickness absence, unemployment and disability pension.

Objective: Depressive symptoms are associated with sickness absence, work disability and unemployment, but little is known about worklife expectancy (WLE). This study investigates the impact of depressive symptoms on the WLE of a large sample of Danish employees.

Methods: We used occupational health survey data of 11 967 Danish employees from 2010 and linked them with register data on salary and transfer payments from 2010 to 2015.

Nitrous oxide (N O) is widely used as inhalation analgesic and anaesthetic in medical, paramedical, and veterinary practice. Previous evaluations resulted in classification of N O as a possible risk factor for adverse reproductive health outcomes based on evidence from animal data. Available human data were considered inadequate, partly due to the possibility that other risk factors, such as co-exposures to other inhalation anaesthetics may have contributed to the adverse outcomes.

Objectives: Methanogenic archaea have been found to make up part of the bioaerosols in pig, cattle, and poultry farms. So far no attempts have been made to determine how season, farm type, and farm characteristics may affect workers' exposure to archaea.

Methods: Personal filter samples from 327 farmers working on 89 Danish farms were analysed for the number of 16S rRNA gene copies from archaea and bacteria and for their dust and endotoxin content.

Test materials, like manufactured nanomaterials (MN), may interact with serum proteins, interleukins (IL) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cause measurement artefacts as a result of e.g., physical adsorption and electrostatic forces, and/or interaction with dissolved species or conditional chemical changes during testing.

Background: Violence and threats of violence against personnel at psychiatric wards as well as in the prison service is a major work environment problem. To date results from interventions to prevent violence and threats in these sectors have been inconclusive or of small effect. One of the reasons may be that violence and threats of violence occur as a consequence of a complex interaction between employee-level and management-level factors.

Hamstring rate of torque development is more affected than maximal voluntary contraction after a professional soccer match.

Eur J Sport Sci

November 2019

Exercise Research Laboratory, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, and Dance School, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul , Porto Alegre , Brazil.

Match-induced fatigue of knee muscle strength and agonist-antagonist strength-ratios may affect both performance and risk of injury in soccer players. Once explosive tasks are imperative in soccer as well as hamstring strain injuries occur during high-velocity moments, rapid force capacity of this muscle group is especially important. This study evaluated the effect of match-induced fatigue on knee muscle strength and strength-ratio parameters after a single professional soccer match.

EU countries are obliged to adopt national legislation regarding duration of weekly working hours and rest periods. Yet, working hour characteristics and schedules are likely to differ with respect to starting times and duration depending e.

Industrial sensitizing agents (allergens) in living and working environments play an important role in eliciting type 1 allergic disorders including asthma and allergic rhinitis. Successful management of allergic diseases necessitates identifying their specific causes (ie, identify the causative agent(s) and the route of contact to allergen: airborne, or skin contact) to avoid further exposure. Identification of sensitization by a sensitive and validated measurement of specific IgE is an important step in the diagnosis.

Objectives: Chronic bronchitis (CB) is an important chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-related phenotype, with distinct clinical features and prognostic implications. Occupational exposures have been previously associated with increased risk of CB but few studies have examined this association prospectively using objective exposure assessment. We examined the effect of occupational exposures on CB incidence in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey.

Background: With increasing interest in exposure effects across generations, it is crucial to assess the validity of information given on behalf of others.

Aims: To compare adult's report of their parent's smoking status against parent's own report and examine predictors for discrepant answers.

Methods: We studied 7185 offspring (18-51 years) and one of their parents, n = 5307 (27-67 years) participating in the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe, Spain and Australia (RHINESSA) generation study.

Association Between Trapezius Muscle Tenderness and Tension-Type Headache in Female Office Workers: A Cross-sectional Study.

J Manipulative Physiol Ther

October 2019

National Research Center for the Working Environment, Copenhagen Ø, Denmark; Physical Activity and Human Performance Group, SMI, Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the link between trapezius muscle tenderness and tension-type headaches in female office workers.
  • A survey of 256 participants revealed that higher levels of trapezius tenderness correlated with increased headache intensity and frequency, specifically showing a strong association for those with high intensity headaches and those experiencing headaches for more than 14 days.
  • However, the study found no significant connection between the duration of headaches or the use of pain relief medications and trapezius muscle tenderness.
