A Systematic Literature Review of Trauma Systems: An Operations Management Perspective.

Background: Trauma systems provide comprehensive care across various settings, from prehospital services to rehabilitation, integrating clinical and social care aspects. Established in the 1970s, these systems are pivotal yet under-researched in their operational management. This study aims to fill this gap by focussing on the integration of operations management (OM) techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of trauma systems.

Respiratory Muscle Strength Correlation with Functional Capacity, Quality of Life, Demographics and Co-morbidities in Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury.

Objectives: To record Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) and Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP) in neuro-rehabilitation patients and establish correlation with functional status, quality of life, demographics and co-morbidities.

Methods: Respiratory muscle strength was measured in 50 stroke patients and 50 spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Both groups were evaluated with the Modified Barthel Index (MBI-Shah version) and the 36-Item Short Form Survey.

Background: The utility of the suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) in the non-surgical management of shoulder pain continues to be explored, whilst its associated physical harms have not. This systematic review aims to report the physical harms associated with the SSNB in the non-surgical management of shoulder pain.

Methods: A search was undertaken of AMED, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, Pubmed, and Scopus databases.

Inter- and intra-rater reliability of cognitive assessment conducted by assistive robot for older adults living in the community: a preliminary study.

Background: The purpose of this study was to reveal inter- and intra-rater reliability of the detailed evaluation of cognitive function by assistive robot for older adults.

Methods: We investigated the inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination was conducted twice for each participant using an assistive robot and the examiner respectively (Experiment 1).

HAP-PEE: A Danish National Study of Challenges Related to Urinating When Away from Home in Women with Neuromuscular Diseases, Impact on Activity and Participation and Prevalence of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms.

Background: Little is known about the challenges faced by women with a neuromuscular disease (NMD) when having to go to the toilet in other places than home; a topic that is highly important for participation and bladder health.

Objective: The aim was to investigate whether women with NMD have problems in going to the toilet when not at home, the problems' impact on their social activities, education, and working life, which strategies they use to manage the problems, and the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).

Methods: A national survey containing questions on type of NMD, mobility, impacts on social activities, education, working life, and bladder health was developed by women with NMD and researchers.

However, the link between balance impairments and joint kinematics during walking remains unclear. Purpose: Cutting nails is an essential activity of daily living. In this study, a foot-operated safety nail clipper for people with stroke hemiplegia was developed in four phases using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology.

Materials And Methods: A user was identified to develop a foot-operated, safe nail clipper for people with stroke hemiplegia (Phase 1).

A multimodal interdisciplinary rehabilitation programme (HAPPY) for patients undergoing allogeneic non-myeloablative haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A feasibility study.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of the multimodal interdisciplinary rehabilitation programme HAPPY, targeting patients with haematological malignancy and undergoing allogeneic non-myeloablative haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (NMA-HSCT).

Method: A single arm longitudinal design was applied to test the feasibility of the 6-month HAPPY programme, which consisted of motivational interviewing dialogues, individual supervised physical exercise training, relaxation exercises, nutritional counselling, and home assignments. The feasibility measures included acceptability, fidelity, exposure, practicability, and safety.

Development of an International SMA Bulbar Assessment for Inter-professional Administration.

Background: Progressive weakness can affect bulbar muscles in individuals with moderate to severe forms of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The paucity of standardized, valid bulbar assessments capturing clinically significant deficits in SMA impedes the ability to monitor function, facilitate intervention, or detect treatment response.

Objective: To fill this void, an international multidisciplinary team gathered to develop an agreed upon consensus-derived assessment of bulbar function in SMA for inter-professional administration to enhance our ability to monitor disease progression, support clinical management, and evaluate treatment effects.

Objectives: We aimed to develop a Service Capacity Index for Substance Use Disorders (SCI-SUD) that would reflect the capacity of national health systems to provide treatment for alcohol and drug use disorders, in terms of the proportion of available service elements in a given country from a theoretical maximum.

Methods: Data were collected through the WHO Global Survey on Progress with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Health Target 3.5, conducted between December 2019 and July 2020 to produce the SCI-SUD, based on 378 variables overall.

Mental health reported in adult invasive home mechanical ventilation through a tracheostomy: A scoping review.

Background: Although people receiving invasive home mechanical ventilation through a tracheostomy are facing both physical and mental health challenges, healthcare services often focus mainly on physical symptoms. To ensure well-functioning treatment and care for people receiving tracheostomy ventilation in a home setting, their mental health needs to be promoted and seen as an integral part of their health in general.

Objective: This scoping review aimed to provide a summary of the current knowledge on the mental health of people receiving invasive home mechanical ventilation through a tracheostomy.

The Psychological Impact of Isolation on Hospitalised Patients with COVID-19 Infection in the UAE.

Infection prevention and control measures for COVID-19 may include immediate admission to an isolation facility for the infected. However, the mental health impact of this isolation worldwide is not fully documented. This study aims to contribute to global data on the psychological impact of COVID-19 and to be the first study to assess psychological distress among hospitalised patients with COVID-19 in the UAE.

New medicine for neuromuscular diseases: An evolving paradox for patient and family hopes and expectations.

Recent developments in novel therapies for neuromuscular diseases offer parents new perspectives on their affected children's future. This article examines how the emergence of new therapies impacts the lives of parents of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy or spinal muscular atrophy type 2, two genetic neuromuscular disorders characterized by progressive muscle degeneration. Aiming for a first-person perspective, fieldwork was conducted utilizing participant observation, semistructured interviews, and several internet sources.

Background: In Sierra Leone persons with disabilities are at higher risk of living in poverty and have poor access to a fragile healthcare and rehabilitation services. Is radiographic lumbar spinal stenosis associated with the quality of life?: The Wakayama Spine Study.

Objectives: This prospective study aimed to determine the association between radiographic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and the quality of life (QOL) in the general Japanese population.

Methods: The severity of radiographic LSS was qualitatively graded on axial magnetic resonance images as follows: no stenosis, mild stenosis with ≤1/3 narrowing, moderate stenosis with a narrowing between 1/3 and 2/3, and severe stenosis with > 2/3 narrowing. Patients less than 40 years of age and those who had undergone previous lumbar spine surgery were excluded from the study.

Purpose: Several articles have claimed that complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) does not exist. Although a minority view, it is important to understand the arguments presented in these articles. We conducted a systematic literature search to evaluate the methodological quality of articles that claim CRPS does not exist.

Exploratory Economic Evaluation of Buprenorphine Treatment in Opioid Use Disorder.

Background: Burden of opioid use disorder (OUD) is expressed in economic values or health metrics like Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). Disability Weight (DW), a component of DALYs is estimated using economic methods or psychometric tools. Estimating DW at patient level using psychometric tools is an alternative to non-population specific DW overestimated by economic methods.

Research points to the health benefits of rehabilitation in urban green spaces. Nevertheless, more studies indicate complexity of utilising urban green spaces in an established health system context. An understanding of challenges related to rehabilitation in urban green spaces remains unaddressed.

Parents' advice to other parents of children with spinal muscular atrophy: Two nationwide follow-ups.

Being a parent of a child with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a disease that causes progressive muscle weakness, involves a range of challenges. The purpose of this study was to explore what advice parents of children with severe SMA, in absence of effective therapies, would like to give to other parents. This study derives from two nationwide parental surveys in Sweden and Denmark, where content analysis was used to analyse one open-ended question about parents' advice to other parents.

The aim was to examine the potential of outdoor contexts within community-based rehabilitation to empower people with disabilities in their rehabilitation. Interpretive description was applied as the methodology in a 5-month ethnographic fieldwork study, and guided by social practice theory. In total, 115 people with disabilities were included for participant observation, of which 15 participants were recruited for individual walking interviews.

Progression or Not - A Small Natural History Study of Genetical Confirmed Congenital Myopathies.

Background: Clinical characteristics of patients with congenital myopathies (CM) are well known but there is a lack of knowledge about the natural history and course of disease of the different genetic subtypes. In 2010 we assessed the national cohort of Danish patients with CM to decide genetic diagnosing and describe genotype- phenotype relationships.AIM of this follow-up study was to evaluate the course of disease since the initial study and to evaluate the applicability of standard assessment methods to reflect change over time and patients own opinion on the course of disease.
