Loving-kindness meditation (LKM) was first practiced by Buddhists and then developed by clinical psychologist. Previous studies on LKM have mainly focused on the impact of real person-guided meditation on depression, anxiety, and other negative psychology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this study explored the effect and mechanism of media-guided LKM on the improvement of social presence, mindfulness, spirituality, and subjective wellbeing (SWB).

Primers are critical for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and influence PCR experimental outcomes. Designing numerous combinations of forward and reverse primers involves various primer constraints, posing a computational challenge. Most PCR primer design methods limit parameters because the available algorithms use general fitness functions.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal disorder that occurs in preterm infants with low birth weight and is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children. Early identification of high-risk patients and early diagnosis and timely treatment of ROP can substantially improve patients' visual outcomes. However, manual screening consumes both time and resources.

The reproductive cycle, larval development, and juvenile growth of and were investigated to improve their hatchery production for conservation and commercial use in Taiwan. To study the giant clam reproductive cycle, hypodermic extraction of oocytes from and was conducted in Dongsha and Kenting, Taiwan, from March 2013 to May 2014; ripe eggs were observed in both species from March to August. There was no apparent correlation between reproduction and water temperature.

Identifying and characterizing the interaction between risk factors for multiple outcomes (multi-outcome interaction) has been one of the greatest challenges faced by complex multifactorial diseases. However, the existing approaches have several limitations in identifying the multi-outcome interaction. To address this issue, we proposed a multi-outcome interaction identification approach called MOAI.

Synthesis of lipophilic arbutin ester by enzymatic transesterification in high pressure carbon dioxide.

Enzyme Microb Technol

August 2021

Department of Food Science, National Penghu University of Science and Technology, Makung City, Penghu, 880011, Taiwan, ROC. Electronic address:

In this study, a novel one-step enzymatic acylation was developed for the synthesis of hydrophobic arbutin ester, by using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO) as the reaction solvent. Immobilized Novozym 435 from Candida antarctica was identified as the best biocatalyst for producing arbutin palmitate through transesterification between arbutin and palmitic acid ethyl ester in SC-CO. A transesterification yield of 85.

The Crustacean Hyperglycemic Hormone Superfamily: Progress Made in the Past Decade.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

June 2021

Graduate Program of Biotechnology and Department of Biology, National Changhua University of Education, Changhua, Taiwan.

Early studies recognizing the importance of the decapod eyestalk in the endocrine regulation of crustacean physiology-molting, metabolism, reproduction, osmotic balance, etc.-helped found the field of crustacean endocrinology. Characterization of putative factors in the eyestalk using distinct functional bioassays ultimately led to the discovery of a group of structurally related and functionally diverse neuropeptides, crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH), molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH), gonad-inhibiting hormone (GIH) or vitellogenesis-inhibiting hormone (VIH), and mandibular organ-inhibiting hormone (MOIH).

This study investigates the effects of Phyllanthus amarus extract (PAE) on immune responses, growth, and resistance to Vibrio alginolyticus in white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). In vitro PAE treatment did not alter the cell viability of haemocytes and significantly enhanced immune parameters such as phenoloxidase (PO) activity, phagocytic activity, and superoxide anion (O) production. We conducted two feeding trials to examine the effects of PAE on the growth, disease resistance, and innate immune parameters of white shrimp.

Plasmid transfers among bacterial populations can directly influence the ecological adaptation of these populations and their interactions with host species and environment. In this study, we developed a selective multiply-primed rolling circle amplification (smRCA) approach to enrich and characterize circular plasmid DNA from sponge microbial symbionts via high-throughput sequencing (HTS). DNA (plasmid and total community DNA) obtained from sponge (Cinachyrella sp.

This study investigates the effects of three medicinal herbal extracts, namely Bidens pilosa (BPE), Lonicera japonica (LJE), and Cyathula officinalis (COE), on nonspecific immune parameters of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) in vitro and in vivo. During in vitro tests, BPE treatment increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in a dose-dependent manner in primary head kidney leukocytes. Similarly, ROS production rates were enhanced by LJE (50 and 100 mg/ml) and COE (100 mg/ml).

Using Long Short-Term Memory for Building Outdoor Agricultural Machinery.

Front Neurorobot

May 2020

Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Ilan University, Yilan City, Taiwan.

Today, climate change has caused a decrease in agricultural output or overall yields that are not as expected; however, with the ongoing population explosion, many undeveloped countries have transformed into emerging countries and have transformed farmland to be used in other types of applications. The resulting decline in agricultural output further increases the severity of the food crisis. In this context, this study proposes an outdoor agricultural robot that uses Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM).
