Introduction And Aims: Acute pancreatitis (AP) can rapidly progress from a stable condition to multiple organ failure with high mortality. We aimed to describe the characteristics of AP patients requiring admission to a critical care facility and to identify predictors of disease progression.

Methods: We conducted a post-hoc analysis using prospectively collected data from AP patients admitted to the high dependency unit (HDU) and intensive care unit (ICU) at the University of Pécs, Hungary, from 2016 to 2019.

Background: Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type 1 (LAD-1) is an inborn error of immunity characterized by a defect in leukocyte trafficking.

Methods: Patients with clinical suspicion of LAD-1 were referred to our institution. Complete blood count and flow cytometric analysis, to identify the expression of CD18, CD11b, and the lymphocyte population phenotyping, were performed, and statistical analysis was completed.

PKDCC encodes a component of Hedgehog signalling required for normal chondrogenesis and skeletal development. Although biallelic PKDCC variants have been implicated in rhizomelic shortening of limbs with variable dysmorphic features, this association was based on just two patients. In this study, data from the 100 000 Genomes Project was used in conjunction with exome sequencing and panel-testing results accessed via international collaboration to assemble a cohort of eight individuals from seven independent families with biallelic PKDCC variants.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy with historically poor outcomes and no worldwide consensus treatment approach. Unique among most hematologic malignancies for its frequent cutaneous involvement, BPDCN can also invade other extramedullary compartments, including the central nervous system. Generally affecting older adults, many patients are unfit to receive intensive chemotherapy, and although hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is preferred for younger, fit individuals, not all are eligible.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of several metabolic conditions predisposing to chronic diseases. Individuals diagnosed with MetS are physiologically heterogeneous, with significant sex-specific differences. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the potential sex-specific serum modifications of amino acids and acylcarnitines (ACs) and their relationship with MetS in the Mexican population.

Recent evidence shows that obesity correlates negatively with bone mass. However, traditional anthropometric measures such as body mass index could not discriminate visceral adipose tissue from subcutaneous adipose tissue. The visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a reliable sex-specified indicator of visceral adipose distribution and function.

COVID-19 affects the paediatric population less frequently than adults. A retrospective study was performed in a tertiary paediatric hospital in Mexico City in children <18 years of age who were hospitalized with a positive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction for SARS-CoV-2. Included in the study were 86 patients with a median age of 10 years old (IQR 2.

Background: Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) has become more common due to higher life expectancy with cystic fibrosis. Early recognition and prompt treatment of CFRD leads to improved outcomes.

Methods: We performed a network meta-analysis (NMA) in order to identify the most valuable diagnostic metrics for diagnosing CFRD out of available screening tools (index test), using the oral glucose tolerance test as a reference standard.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by cerebellar ataxia and retinal degeneration, is caused by an abnormal CAG repeat expansion in the gene coding region. The onset and severity of SCA7 are highly variable between patients, thus identification of sensitive biomarkers that accurately diagnose the disease and monitoring its progression are needed. With the aim of identified SCA7-specific metabolites with clinical relevance, we report for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a metabolomics profiling of circulating acylcarnitines and amino acids in SCA7 patients.

Pyrethroid insecticides are commonly used worldwide. The chronic effects of these compounds are of concern given that epidemiological studies have suggested an association with hematological cancer, particularly in children. However, the biological evidence at molecular and cellular levels is limited.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how adipose tissue proteins, leptin and adiponectin, affect breast cancer development, specifically focusing on the AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 receptors in an obesity model.
  • - Researchers analyzed the expression of AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 in breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and HCC1937) under varying leptin concentrations using immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR.
  • - Results showed that leptin increased cell growth in both cell lines while impacting AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 expressions differently, indicating leptin's regulatory role in their mRNA expression connected to breast cancer.

Unlabelled: The authors compared the safety and efficacy of a ready-to-use, premixed, rice-based oral rehydration solution (R-ORS) with a glucose-based oral rehydration solution (G-ORS), each containing 75 mmol/L sodium, in Mexican children with acute diarrhea for less than 5 days.

Methods: One hundred eighty-nine boys 3 to 24 months old admitted to the hospital with acute diarrhea and signs of dehydration were randomly assigned to receive either G-ORS or R-ORS. Intake and output were measured every 3 hours.
