Concomitant virus infection increases mortality and worsens outcome of acute pancreatitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Pancreatology

December 2024

Centre for Translational Medicine, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary; Institute for Translational Medicine, Medical School, University of Pécs, Pécs, Hungary. Electronic address:

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a major health threat, with a high mortality rate in severe forms. Though alcohol and bile-induced factors are the most common causes, increasing evidence suggests that viral infections such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may also trigger AP development. Our study aims to explore this association in greater detail.

Severe clinical manifestations of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) are associated with the dysregulation of immune response following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore, we analyzed the levels of 10 selected cytokines at admission to estimate disease severity and to predict the length of hospitalization. In remission samples, these mediators were followed after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment before discharge.

Purpose: In PAX6 syndrome, it is still not clear, whether prenatally, parallel to the iris tissue developmental anomaly, there is neural ectodermal, neural crest, or mesodermal cell deposition at the corneal endothelium, affecting endothelial structure and function. In addition, because of the postnatal corneal inflammation and commonly appearing secondary glaucoma, progressive endothelial changes are expected. Our purpose was to study the corneal endothelium in subjects with PAX6 aniridia, using in vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Background And Aims: Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) is a byproduct of the heme group that indicates irregularities in the metabolism of several important biological molecules, such as hemoglobin. UCB is processed by hepatic UGT1A1, which catalyzes its conjugation to the metabolites bilirubin diglucuronide (BDG) and bilirubin monoglucuronide (BMG). The serum concentrations of BDG and BMG may indicate liver injury or dysfunction.

Head-to-head comparison of influenza vaccines in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Transl Med

October 2024

Pediatric Center, MTA Center of Excellence, Semmelweis University, Bókay Unit, Bókay János Utca 53-54, 1083, Budapest, Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vaccination against influenza varies globally in terms of coverage, policies, and funding; however, child-focused nasal vaccines that are pain-free are rarely implemented, despite their potential for herd immunity.
  • - A review of clinical trials showed no significant differences in efficacy between live-attenuated intranasal vaccines and inactivated intramuscular vaccines, but some multi-center studies indicated an advantage for the live-attenuated version in certain settings.
  • - The study recorded few serious adverse events from vaccines, suggesting that increasing the use of pediatric nasal flu vaccines could be advantageous, and there's a call for more research, especially involving younger children and those in tropical regions.

Appendicitis in children: correlation between the surgical and histological diagnosis.

Pediatr Surg Int

October 2024

Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Pediatrics, Medical School, University of Pecs, 7 Jozsef Attila Street, Pecs, 7633, Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how well doctors diagnose appendicitis in kids during surgery compared to what the lab finds after.
  • It included 1444 kids who had their appendices taken out between 2011 and 2020, comparing two types of surgery: laparoscopic (small cuts) and open (bigger cut).
  • The results showed that when surgeons believed the problem was less severe than it really was, kids stayed in the hospital longer and had more complications.

We discovered high-titer neutralizing autoantibodies against interleukin-10 in a child with infantile-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a phenocopy of inborn errors of interleukin-10 signaling. After B-cell-depletion therapy and an associated decrease in the anti-interleukin-10 titer, conventional IBD therapy could be withdrawn. A second child with neutralizing anti-interleukin-10 autoantibodies had a milder course of IBD and has been treated without B-cell depletion.
