Background: Perianeurysmal edema (PAE) has a tendency to occur in embolized aneurysms but also in partially thrombosed, large, or giant aneurysms. However, there are only a few cases recorded in which PAE was detected in untreated or small aneurysms. We suspected that PAE might be an impending sign of aneurysm rupture in these cases.

Pitavastatin Ameliorates Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction.

Biomedicines

July 2021

Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98108, USA.

Statins have neuroprotective effects on neurological diseases, including a pleiotropic effect possibly related to blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. In this study, we investigated the effects of pitavastatin (PTV) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced BBB dysfunction in an in vitro BBB model comprising cocultured primary mouse brain endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes. LPS (1 ng/mL, 24 h) increased the permeability and lowered the transendothelial electrical resistance of the BBB, and the co-administration of PTV prevented these effects.

Treatment of Periorbital and Palpebral Arteriovenous Malformations.

Adv Wound Care (New Rochelle)

June 2019

Department of Plastic Surgery, Wound Repair, School of Medicine, Fukuoka University, Fukuoka, Japan.

To clarify clinically challenging palpebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and to propose a novel therapeutic modality, we developed a multi-disciplinary approach for the management of AVMs with ulcer. First, the central retinal artery was secured with embolization by the transophthalmic arterial, a terminal branch of the internal carotid artery (ICA), and then, the branches of the external carotid artery (ECA) were embolized to cause a response in the AVM vasculature followed by sclerotherapy and surgery. Over a 3-year follow-up of palpebral and periorbital AVMs in four females and one male 20 to 50 years of age with a mean age of 38 years, complete remission of the lesions were seen with no major complication, such as blindness, ptosis, or cerebral infarction, with functionally sound and esthetically acceptable results, with no recurrence or worsening even with one case of ulceration postembolization.

Rationale: The superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator (SCIP) free flap is a popular method used in foot reconstruction. Although the SCIP flap has a relatively short pedicle and does not require intramuscular dissection, general anesthesia is largely preferred for SCIP flap reconstruction. We report 2 cases with the free SCIP flap for skin and soft tissue reconstruction of the foot under local anesthesia.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study involved a genome-wide association study (GWAS) focused on identifying genetic factors associated with HBV-related liver cancer (HCC) among Japanese individuals, including 473 HCC patients and 516 HBV carriers.
  • - Researchers found 65 significant SNPs in the HLA class I region, and confirmed three of these SNPs through further analysis, showing strong links to HCC risk in multiple East Asian populations.
  • - The study also highlighted a specific HLA allele (HLA-A 33:03) linked to disease progression to HCC, but additional genetic influences in the HLA class I region were suggested since conditioning on HLA did not eliminate the associations of the three SNPs.

Electroencephalography (EEG)-the direct recording of the electrical activity of populations of neurons-is a tremendously important tool for diagnosing, treating, and researching epilepsy. Although standard procedures for recording and analyzing human EEG exist and are broadly accepted, there are no such standards for research in animal models of seizures and epilepsy-recording montages, acquisition systems, and processing algorithms may differ substantially among investigators and laboratories. The lack of standard procedures for acquiring and analyzing EEG from animal models of epilepsy hinders the interpretation of experimental results and reduces the ability of the scientific community to efficiently translate new experimental findings into clinical practice.

Lhermitte-Duclos disease (LDD) is a neurological disease caused by a hamartomatous lesion in the cerebellum. Clinically, LDD is commonly associated with progressive space-occupying lesion effects in the posterior fossa, increasing intracranial pressure, occlusive hydrocephalus, and focal neurological deficits of adjacent structures. The authors report the case of a 10-year-old boy with LDD who had been suffering from vomiting attacks (VAs).

Background: Secondary lymphedema is often observed in postmalignancy treatment of the breast and the gynecologic organs, but effective therapies have not been established in chronic cases even with advanced physiologic operations. Currently, reconstructive surgery with novel approaches has been attempted.

Methods: The hindlimbs of 10-week-old male C57BL/6J mice, after 30-Gy x-irradiation, surgical lymph node dissection, and 5-mm gap creation, were divided into four groups, with vascularized lymph node transfer abdominal flap and 1.

Aim Of The Study: Pediatric hand deep dermal and deep burns may lead to serious hand deformity with functional impairment and result in an esthetically unfavorable outcome. Since there is no guideline regarding the use of growth factors for pediatric hand burns, we sought to investigate the effectiveness of an angiogenic and regenerative growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF).

Methods: Consecutive series of second degree or third degree palmer burns at less than 3 years of age seen from January 2010 to June 2014 were included for evaluation at 6 months post-wound healing.

Effects of HLA-DPB1 genotypes on chronic hepatitis B infection in Japanese individuals.

Tissue Antigens

December 2015

Department of Hepatic Disease, The Research Center for Hepatitis and Immunology, National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Chiba, Japan.

Significant associations of HLA-DP alleles with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection are evident in Asian and Arabian populations, including Japanese, Han Chinese, Korean, and Saudi Arabian populations. Here, significant associations between CHB infection and five DPB1 alleles (two susceptibility alleles, DPB1(*) 05:01 and (*) 09:01, and three protective alleles, DPB1(*) 02:01, (*) 04:01, and (*) 04:02) were confirmed in a population comprising of 2582 Japanese individuals. Furthermore, odds ratios for CHB were higher for those with both DPB1 susceptibility alleles than for those with only one susceptibility allele; therefore, effects of susceptibility alleles were additive for risk of CHB infection.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is an uncommon autoimmune disease with a homogeneous clinical phenotype that reflects incomplete disease concordance in monozygotic (MZ) twins. We have taken advantage of a unique collection consisting of genomic DNA and mRNA from peripheral blood cells of female MZ twins (n = 3 sets) and sisters of similar age (n = 8 pairs) discordant for disease. We performed a genome-wide study to investigate differences in (i) DNA methylation (using a custom tiled four-plex array containing tiled 50-mers 19,084 randomly chosen methylation sites), (ii) copy number variation (CNV) (with a chip including markers derived from the 1000 Genomes Project, all three HapMap phases, and recently published studies), and/or (iii) gene expression (by whole-genome expression arrays).
