Despite measures taken world-wide, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues. Because efficient antiviral drugs are not yet widely available, vaccination is the best option to control the infection rate. Although this option is obvious in the case of COVID-19-naive individuals, it is still unclear when individuals who have recovered from a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection should be vaccinated and whether the vaccination raises immune responses against the coronavirus and its novel variants.

In the Turkish saddle area, there is a wide variety of pathological processes, the vast majority of which present as tumors of various origins (up to 90%). For a clear morphological verification of the diagnosis, it is proposed to use a diagnostic algorithm that includes the stages of differential diagnosis of normal adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis with tumors in the anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary gland, non-pituitary origin neoplasms, as well as with non-tumor pathological processes (inflammation, cystic masses, and hyperplasia). For morphological diagnosis, histochemical and immunohistochemical methods are recommended using various staining techniques (silver impregnation, periodic acid Schiff reaction) of tissue specimens and antibody panels (pituitary hormones, low-molecular cytokeratins, pituitary transcription factors, neuroendocrine markers, etc.

The advancement of precision medicine critically depends on the robustness and specificity of the carriers used for the targeted delivery of effector molecules in the human body. Numerous nanocarriers have been explored in vivo, to ensure the precise delivery of molecular cargos via tissue-specific targeting, including the endocrine part of the pancreas, thyroid, and adrenal glands. However, even after reaching the target organ, the cargo-carrying vehicle needs to enter the cell and then escape lysosomal destruction.

Anticancer drugs that target cellular antioxidant systems have recently attracted much attention. Auranofin (AF) is currently evaluated in several clinical trials as an anticancer agent that targets the cytosolic and mitochondrial forms of the selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase, TXNRD1 and TXNRD2. Recently, two novel TXNRD1 inhibitors (TRi-1 and TRi-2) have been developed that showed anticancer efficacy comparable to AF, but with lower mitochondrial toxicity.

Detailed characterization of cell type transitions is essential for cell biology in general and particularly for the development of stem cell-based therapies in regenerative medicine. To systematically study such transitions, we introduce a method that simultaneously measures protein expression and thermal stability changes in cells and provide the web-based visualization tool ProteoTracker. We apply our method to study differences between human pluripotent stem cells and several cell types including their parental cell line and differentiated progeny.

The article describes a very rare case of bony regrowth after deep lateral orbital decompression for thyroid eye disease. Bony regrowth was observed in the area of the resected «trigone» of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and in the area of the exposed dura mater. This case demonstrates that bony regrowth can be a possible cause of exophthalmos (proptosis) recurrence after orbital decompression in thyroid eye disease without clinical or laboratory evidence of reactivation of the disease.

Avian influenza is one of the largest known threats to domestic poultry. Influenza outbreaks on poultry farms typically lead to the complete slaughter of the entire domestic bird population, causing severe economic losses worldwide. Moreover, there are highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strains that are able to infect the swine or human population in addition to their primary avian host and, as such, have the potential of being a global zoonotic and pandemic threat.

Transplantation of miPSC/mESC-derived retinal ganglion cells into healthy and glaucomatous retinas.

Mol Ther Methods Clin Dev

June 2021

The Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 02114, USA.

Optic neuropathies, including glaucoma, are a group of neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by the progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), leading to irreversible vision loss. While previous studies demonstrated the potential to replace RGCs with primary neurons from developing mouse retinas, their use is limited clinically. We demonstrate successful transplantation of mouse induced pluripotent stem cell (miPSC)/mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC)-derived RGCs into healthy and glaucomatous mouse retinas, at a success rate exceeding 65% and a donor cell survival window of up to 12 months.

Background: Insulin resistance accelerates the aging process, but its speed depends on the individual characteristics of the metabolism. One of the reasons for the different aging rates in individuals with insulin resistance is the initially different "genetic protection" of cells, which many scientists associate with replicative cellular aging.

Aims: to study the relationship between the state of carbohydrate metabolism and markers of replicative cell aging in individuals with different sensitivity to insulin.

Radioactive iodine, flying out of the destroyed reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, like a corona virus quickly spread throughout Europe. Iodine deficiency in the regions of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia adjacent to nuclear power plants became a factor in increased uptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland in children and after 5 years led to an epidemic of thyroid cancer. Optimal iodine intake could become a kind of vaccination, which sharply reduces the risk of developing thyroid cancer, as has happened after the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

Currently, only two drugs for reducing uric acid (UA), allopurinol and febuxostat, are registered in the Russian Federation, but their use does not allow to achieve the target level of UA in all cases. According to the results of numerous randomized trials, hyperuricemia and gout are associated with the corresponding components of the metabolic syndrome, including diabetes mellitus. The influence of factors is due to the need to search for new drugs that have a complex effect on several components of metabolic syndrome at once.

[Intravitreal therapy of diabetic macular edema in Russian Federation: current state of the problem].

Vestn Oftalmol

October 2019

I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Department of Ophthalmology, 8-2 Trubetskaya St., Moscow, Russian Federation, 119991.

Currently there is a significant increase in the incidence of diabetes mellitus all over the world, and Russia is not an exception. With the increase in patients with diabetic retinopathy, also rises the incidence of diabetic macular edema, which can lead to persistent loss of vision and disability dramatically affecting the quality of life. Antiangiogenic therapy that is effectively used all over world has specific features for clinical practice in Russia because of its high cost, insufficient public funding, low patient compliance, remoteness of patients from the places of medical care, and low awareness of both patients and doctors about the treatment effectiveness and required regimen.

Tumor-associated antigen (TAA)-specific autoantibodies have been widely implicated in cancer diagnosis. However, cancer cell lines that are typically exploited as candidate TAA sources in immunoproteomic studies may fail to accurately represent the autoantigen-ome of lower-grade neoplasms. Here, we established an integrated strategy for the identification of disease-relevant TAAs in thyroid neoplasia, which combined NRAS oncogene expression in non-tumorous thyroid Nthy-ori 3-1 cells with a multi-dimensional proteomic technique DISER that consisted of profiling NRAS-induced proteins using 2-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) coupled with serological proteome analysis (SERPA) of the TAA repertoire of patients with thyroid encapsulated follicular-patterned/RAS-like phenotype (EFP/RLP) tumors.

Non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) account for about 30% of all pituitary tumors. NFPAs are characterized by the lack of secretory potential or its weak expression insufficient for determination of the blood level of adenohypophyseal tropic hormones and for development of a specific clinical picture. Morphologically, NFPAs are a heterogeneous group of tumors, the classification of which was previously based only on immunoreactivity for pituitary tropic hormones.

Papillary carcinoma is the most commonly diagnosed form of well-differentiated thyroid cancer that is generally characterized by a favorable prognosis. However, a number of relatively rare variants of this tumor, such as papillary carcinoma of high cells, papillary carcinoma of columnar cells, a diffuse sclerosing variant and recently described cancer of shoe nail cell type, are characterized by a less favorable clinical course, a high frequency of distant metastasis, and relatively low overall and relapse-free survival rates. In this connection, it is important to recognize these options at the stage of a primary morphological study.
