Introduction: Fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) improve overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with pancreatic cancer, compared with gemcitabine (GEM). However, whether PFS is a surrogate marker of OS in pancreatic cancer chemotherapy focusing on FOLFIRINOX or GEM plus nab-paclitaxel remains unknown. We aimed to verify whether PFS can be a surrogate marker of OS in prognosis prediction.

Nanoliposomal irinotecan with fluorouracil and folinic acid (NFF) is a standard regimen after gemcitabine-based therapy for patients with unresectable or recurrent pancreatic cancer. However, there are limited clinical data on its efficacy and safety in the real-world. We therefore initiated a retrospective and prospective observational study (NAPOLEON-2).

Acquired tracheobronchomalacia (ATBM) is a condition in which the tracheobronchial wall and cartilage progressively lose their rigidity, resulting in dynamic collapse during exhalation. In this report, we present a case of ATBM that developed following voice prosthesis implantation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of such a condition in the medical English literature based on a PubMed search.

Aims: p16 is a sensitive surrogate marker for transcriptionally active high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection in endocervical adenocarcinoma (ECA); however, its specificity is not perfect.
Methods And Results: We examined p16 and Rb expressions by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and the transcriptionally active HR-HPV infection by mRNA in-situ hybridisation (ISH) with histological review in 108 ECA cases. Thirteen adenocarcinomas of endometrial or equivocal origin (six endometrioid and seven serous carcinomas) were compared as the control group.

Background/aim: Recent research has demonstrated that laparoscopic multivisceral resection (MVR) for advanced colorectal cancer is safe, practicable, and yields satisfactory oncological results, which is in line with the growing usage of laparoscopic surgery. The effectiveness of laparoscopic MVR is still debatable, though. The goal of this study was to compare the short- and long-term results of patients with advanced colorectal cancer treated with open MVR with laparoscopic procedures.

First-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer (MPC) includes gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) and FOLFIRINOX (FFX). However, the efficacy of second-line chemotherapy and the role of combination chemotherapy in clinical practice is still unknown. Data was gathered from 14 hospitals in the Kyushu area of Japan from December 2013 to March 2017.

Background/aim: Radiomics, which links radiological image features with patient prognoses, is expected to be applied for the prediction of the clinical outcomes of radiotherapy. We investigated the clinical and radiomic factors associated with recurrence patterns after stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 125 patients with histologically confirmed NSCLC who underwent SBRT between April 2003 and June 2017 at our institution.

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical impact of the level of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation in patients with advanced low rectal cancer.
Patients And Methods: All enrolled patients (n=350) underwent curative resection of rectal cancer with D3 lymph node dissection, with either IMA (high-tie) or superior rectal artery (SRA) (low-tie) ligation.
Results: There were 27 and 65 patients in the high-tie and low-tie groups, respectively.

Background: Long-term survival can be achieved with radical local therapy in some cases of postoperative recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we evaluated post-recurrence survival (PRS) after treatment of postoperative recurrent epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutated NSCLC and examined the effectiveness of radical local therapy.
Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted in 14 hospitals.

The actin regulatory protein, cofilin plays a key signaling role in many cells for numerous cellular responses including in proliferation, development, motility, migration, secretion and growth. In the pancreas it is important in islet insulin secretion, growth of pancreatic cancer cells and in pancreatitis. However, there are no studies on its role or activation in pancreatic acinar cells.

Methods: Patients with completely resected NSCLC were randomized to receive three cycles of docetaxel plus cisplatin (DC) or paclitaxel plus carboplatin (PC) on day 1 every 3 weeks.

Background/aim: Peritoneal metastasis (PM) of gastric cancer (GC) leads to poor clinical outcomes. Tumor-derived exosomes promote metastasis via communication between tumor cells and host cells. In this study, we investigated the effect of Rab27, which is required for exosome secretion, on the PM of GC.

Aims: Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) and fumarate hydratase-deficient renal cell carcinoma (FH-deficient RCC) have similar histological morphologies and both show a poor prognosis. Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitor has been approved for the treatment of RCC. However, tumour-infiltrating neutrophils stimulated by interleukin-8 (IL-8) interfere with PD-L1 inhibitors.

Summary: Surgeons have traditionally believed that swallowing is mainly dependent on gravity after total glossolaryngectomy. However, swallowing function after total glossolaryngectomy varies widely among patients, and a thorough analysis is lacking. The authors aimed to clarify the swallowing function after total glossolaryngectomy and determine whether it is primarily dependent on gravity.

Objectives: The optimal treatment for recurrent non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been standardized. In this prospective cohort study, we evaluated post-recurrence survival (PRS) after treatment of recurrent NSCLC and identified prognostic factors after recurrence.
Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted in 14 hospitals.

Background/aim: This study investigated the effectiveness of pembrolizumab with or without chemotherapy on advanced-stage head and neck cancer (HNC), including nasopharyngeal, sinonasal cavity and external auditory canal cancer, in a real-world setting.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively collected data from 97 HNC patients who were treated with pembrolizumab alone (n=60) or with chemotherapy (n=37), and we investigated the association between clinicopathological findings and treatment response or prognosis.
Results: Patients treated with pembrolizumab and chemotherapy had a 1-year overall survival (OS) of 72.
