Noonan, Costello and Cardio-facio-cutaneous syndromes belong to a group of disorders named RASopathies due to their common pathogenetic origin that lies on the Ras/MAPK signaling pathway. Genetics has eased, at least in part, the distinction of these entities as they are presented with overlapping clinical features which, sometimes, become more pronounced with age. Distinctive face, cardiac and skeletal defects are among the primary abnormalities seen in these patients.

Plant long noncoding RNA enod40 is involved in the regulation of symbiotic associations with bacteria, in particular, in nitrogen-fixing root nodules of legumes, and with fungi in phosphate-acquiring arbuscular mycorrhizae formed by various plants. The presence of enod40 genes in plants that do not form such symbioses indicates its other roles in cell physiology. The molecular mechanisms of enod40 RNA function are poorly understood.

Furins are serine endoproteases that process precursor proteins into their biologically active forms, and they play essential roles in normal metabolism and disease presentation, including promoting expression of bacterial virulence factors and viral pathogenesis. Thus, furins represent vital targets for development of antimicrobial and antiviral therapeutics. Recent experimental evidence indicated that dichlorophenyl (DCP)-pyridine "BOS" drugs (, BOS-318) competitively inhibit human furin by an induced-fit mechanism in which tryptophan W254 in the furin catalytic cleft (FCC) functions as a molecular gate, rotating nearly 180 through a steep energy barrier about its chi-1 dihedral to an "open" orientation, exposing a buried (, cryptic) hydrophobic pocket .
