Vascular calcification (VC) is a complex process of calcium deposition on the arterial wall and atherosclerotic plaques and involves interaction between vascular smooth muscle cells, inflammatory and VC mediators. The latter are independent predictors of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and potential targets of pharmaceutical therapy. This paper is a narrative review of the complex mechanisms of VC development and in this context the potential anti-atherosclerotic effects of statins.

Background: Autolοgous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (AHSCT) is a treatment οption fοr patients with hematological malignancies that improves prοgnοsis and survival. Thus, it is necessary tο deal with its long-term cοmplications, such as sexual dysfunction and trauma that significantly affect survivors' quality οf life.
Objective: The aim οf this study was to evaluate the Sexual Function (SF) and the Pοst-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) οf survivοrs οf hematolοgical malignancy and AHSCT.

Objective: Remote healthcare services is an upgrowing dynamic field that has been used to reduce potential disease spread and prevent overloading of the healthcare system during COVID-19 pandemic. The need for online interventions during the pandemic required immediate response with sometimes inadequate preparation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of remote healthcare services in the field of neuropsychological interventions.

The presence and contribution of senescent cells in premalignant lesions is well documented, but not in germ cell neoplasia in situ. The purpose of this study is to identify the presence of senescent cells in pre-malignant testicular conditions and in different histological types of testicular cancer. Thirty patients who underwent orchiectomy due to testicular tumors were included.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a highly prevalent and aggressive malignancy, with mortality rates reaching 60%, mainly due to its excessive diagnostic delay. MiRNAs, a class of crucial epigenetic gene-expression regulators, have emerged as potential diagnostic biomarkers, with >200 molecules exhibiting expressional dysregulation in OSCC. We had previously established an in silico methodology for the identification of the most disease-specific molecules by bridging genetics and epigenetics.

A plethora of biological molecules regulate chondrogenesis in the epiphyseal growth plate. Disruptions of the quantity and function of these molecules can manifest clinically as stature abnormalities of various etiologies. Traditionally, the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) axis represents the etiological centre of final stature attainment.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is associated with obesity and other related comorbidities, which impose an additional burden on disease activity and response to treatment. We investigated the impact of Mediterranean diet, and exercise on the presentation and severity of PsA. Three hundred fifty-five patients with PsA (n = 279) and psoriasis (PsO) (n = 76) were included in a cross-sectional study.

Objectives: The optimal duration of immunosuppressive (IS) treatment for lupus nephritis (LN) remains uncertain. We assessed the prevalence and predictors of IS tapering and discontinuation (D/C) in LN patients.
Methods: Data from 137 inception cohort LN patients were analyzed.

Objectives: The Thyroidectomy-Related Voice Questionnaire (TVSQ) is a useful tool in the detection of voice changes and dysfunctions and the diagnosis of other symptoms related to transient or permanent laryngeal nerve damage in patients after thyroidectomy. The aim of our study is the translation and validation of (TVSQ) in the Greek language and in Greek population for the first time.
Methods: The TVSQ was translated from English to Greek and vice versa by two independent researchers, while before the application of the TVSQ in clinical practice, a control group of 20 people was used.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a rare, life-threatening, immune-mediated adverse effect of heparin administration. This study compares frequently used laboratory assays in terms of their effectiveness in HIT diagnosis. Fifty patients with suspected HIT were tested by gel immunoassay and solid phase PF4/heparin antibody ELISA.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) represent a novel, mechanism-based, and migraine-specific prophylactic approach. Four mAbs, namely, erenumab, fremanezumab, galcanezumab, and eptinezumab, have been marketed, although head-to-head trials with standard anti-migraine treatments are absent.

Random linear vector channels have been known to increase the transmission of information in several communications systems. For Gaussian priors, the statistics of a key metric, namely, the mutual information, which is related to the free energy of the system, have been analyzed in great detail for various types of channel randomness. However, for the realistic case of non-Gaussian priors, only the average mutual information has been obtained in the asymptotic limit of large channel matrices.

Iron is an essential nutrient and a constituent of ferroproteins and enzymes crucial for human life. Generally, nonmenstruating individuals preserve iron very efficiently, losing less than 0.1% of their body iron content each day, an amount that is replaced through dietary iron absorption.

Precise classification of sarcomas is crucial to optimal clinical management. In this prospective, multicenter, observational study within the Hellenic Group of Sarcoma and Rare Cancers (HGSRC), we assessed the effect of expert pathology review, coupled with the application of molecular diagnostics, on the diagnosis and management of sarcoma patients. Newly diagnosed sarcoma patients were addressed by their physicians to one of the two sarcoma pathologists of HGSRC for histopathological diagnostic assessment.

It has recently been proposed that the study of microbial dynamics in humans may gain insights from island biogeographical theory. Here, we test whether the diversity of the intratumoral microbiota of colorectal cancer tumors (CRC) follows a power law with tumor size akin to the island species-area relationship. We confirm a direct correlation between the quantity of Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) within CRC tumors and tumor sizes, following a (log)power model, explaining 47% of the variation.

The paper highlights the necessity for a robust regulatory framework for assessing nanomedicines and their off-patent counterparts, termed as nanosimilar, which could be considered as 'similar' to the prototype nanomedicine, based on essential criteria describing the 'similarity'. The term 'similarity' should be focused on criteria that describe nanocarriers, encompassing their physicochemical, thermodynamic, morphological, and biological properties, including surface interactions and pharmacokinetics. Nanocarriers can be regarded as advanced self-assembled excipients (ASAEs) due to their complexity and chaotic behavior and should be evaluated by using essential criteria in order for off-patent nanomedicines be termed as nanosimilars, from a regulatory perspective.

Spinal cord compression is a formidable complication of advanced cancer, and clinicians of copious specialities often have to encounter significant complex challenges in terms of diagnosis, management, and prognosis. Metastatic lesions from cancer are a common cause of spinal cord compression, affecting a substantial portion of oncology patients, and only in the US has the percentage risen to 10%. Acute metastasis-correlated spinal cord compression poses a considerable clinical challenge, necessitating timely diagnosis and intervention to prevent neurological deficits.
