The therapeutical advances in recent years in the field of oncology treatment have increased survival rates and improved the quality of life of oncology patients, thus turning cancer into a chronic disease. However, most of the new cancer treatments come at the expense of serious cardiovascular adverse events threatening the success story of these patients. The establishment of multidisciplinary medical teams to prevent, monitor, and treat cardiovascular diseases in cancer-treated patients is needed now more than ever.

The evolving field of nonpharmacological therapies to improve functional capacity in chronic heart failure.

Hellenic J Cardiol

Clinical investigations in chronic heart failure (HF) have been increasingly including endpoints related to functional and exercise capacity. Noninvasive ventilation support (NIVS) constitutes a therapeutic option that could improve several markers of cardiovascular performance and functional capacity along with improvements in HF symptoms such as dyspnea. NIVS with bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) is a therapeutic option that can be better tolerated by patients than continuous positive airway pressure (cPAP) and potentially improve the adherence of patients with HF to NIVS.

Modern educational programs for specialization in psychiatry should follow the developments in psychiatric science, both in the part of acquired knowledge about mental disorders and their treatment, as well as in the part of clinical practice in the diverse spectrum of modern psychiatric services. In Greece, the institutional framework for psychiatric training during specialization has yet to modernize and conform to European standards. For the moment, it is covered by a 1994 Presidential Decree, which briefly describes the time of specialization in psychiatry and the duration of clinical practice in the relevant educational subjects.

[Pro-inflammatory cytokines in Alzheimer's disease].

Psychiatriki

May 2017

1st Department of Psychiatry, National & Kapodestrian University of Athens Medical School, Eginition Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common progressive neurodegenerative disorder in the elderly, is clinically characterized by progressive impairment of cognitive functions, including reduced critical capacity, weakness of decision-making and problem orientation, while in the more advanced stages it is accompanied by behavioral disorders and impaired verbal ability. Neuropathological characteristics of the disease are the neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), the neuritic plaques (NP), the prominent synaptic loss and eventually the neuronal loss. The presence of inflammatory process seems to be playing important role in the progression of the disease.

Exercise intolerance in chronic heart failure: the role of cortisol and the catabolic state.

Curr Heart Fail Rep

March 2014

1st Critical Care Medicine Department, Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing and Rehabilitation Laboratory, "Evgenidio Hospital", National & Kapodestrian University of Athens, Papadiamantopoulou str., 20, Athens, 11528, Greece.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome leading to exercise intolerance due to muscular fatigue and dyspnea. Hemodynamics fail to explain the reduced exercise capacity, while a significant skeletal muscular pathology seems to constitute the main underlying mechanism for exercise intolerance in CHF patients. There have been proposed several metabolic, neurohormonal and immune system abnormalities leading to an anabolic/catabolic imbalance that plays a central role in the pathogenesis of the wasting process of skeletal muscle myopathy.

The Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) represents one of the biggest nightmares of all physicians involved in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Every year, several hundreds of women are hospitalized and to date several deaths have been reported. The pivotal event in the development of OHSS is the disruption of capillary integrity that results in leakage of intravascular fluid and proteins into third space.
