Lactoferrin, a glycoprotein derived from breastmilk, is recognized for its health benefits in infants and children; however, its protective effects when administered during gestation and lactation against offspring hypertension remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether maternal lactoferrin supplementation could prevent hypertension in offspring born to mothers with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with a focus on nitric oxide (NO), renin-angiotensin system (RAS) regulation, and alterations in gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Prior to pregnancy, female rats were subjected to a 0.

A novel five-surface phosphor-in-glass (FS-PiG) structure for high illumination and excellent color uniformity in large-view scale LEDs for sensor light source application is demonstrated. YAG phosphor (YAlO:Ce) was uniformly mixed with ceramic and sintered at 680 °C to form a phosphor wafer. Sophisticated laser engraving was employed on the phosphor wafer to form saddle-shaped large-view scale FS-PiG LEDs.

Pregnant women with chronic kidney disease (CKD) face increased risks of adverse outcomes in their adult offspring. Offspring rats born to dams fed an adenine diet develop hypertension, coinciding with dysregulated hydrogen sulfide (HS) and nitric oxide (NO) pathways, as well as alterations in gut microbiota. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a multifunctional food known for its diverse bioactivities.

We evaluated the influence of organic matter in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in port sediments using multiple linear regression (MLR) and prediction models. Total sediment PAHs ranged between 45 and 3230 ng/g dw (average: 557 ± 962 ng/g dw), with PAHs primarily originating from river inputs, confined to areas near the estuaries. Coal/biomaterial combustion and petroleum mainly contribute to the presence of PAHs along estuaries, with medium-high to high ecological risks.

Trehalose synthase (TreS) catalyzes the reversible interconversion of maltose to trehalose, playing a vital role in trehalose production. Understanding the catalytic mechanism of TreS is crucial for optimizing the enzyme activity and enhancing its suitability for industrial applications. Here, we report the crystal structures of both the wild type and the E324D mutant of trehalose synthase in complex with the trehalose analogue, validoxylamine A.

This study presents a thermo-economic assessment of three low-global-warming-potential (GWP) substitutes, R1233zd(E), R1234ze(Z) and R1234ze(E), for R245fa used in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems, considering two models with different heat sources. The exhaust heat from a diesel generator is served as heat source of Model I, while the waste heat of exhaust and jacket cooling water are used as heat source of Model II. It is noted that the working pressure of R1234ze(E) is much higher than that of R1233zd(E), R1234ze(Z) and R245fa in a fixed evaporation-temperature range.

Background: Neutrophilic inflammation, characterized by dysregulated neutrophil activation, triggers a variety of inflammatory responses such as chemotactic infiltration, oxidative bursts, degranulation, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation, and delayed turnover. This type of inflammation is pivotal in the pathogenesis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and psoriasis. Despite current treatments, managing neutrophil-associated inflammatory symptoms remains a significant challenge.

The emergence of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has elicited both excitement and apprehension among consumers, who find themselves influenced by the perceived scarcity and the perceived risks surrounding these novel digital assets. This study investigates the factors influencing consumer adoption of NFTs by integrating the concepts of perceived scarcity and perceived risks within the theoretical framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Employing structural equation modeling, the research evaluates the impact of perceived scarcity, perceived ease of use, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and perceived risk on NFT purchase intentions.

Gastric cancer significantly contributes to global cancer mortality, often leading to inoperable stages and high recurrence rates post-surgery. Elevated levels of G-17 and G-gly have been identified as potential risk factors, particularly in patients with duodenal ulcers. This study introduces an innovative D-shaped grinding long-period fiber grating sensor (D-LLPFGs) designed for non-invasive detection of the gastrin G-17 antigen, employing a layer-by-layer chemical self-assembly to bond G-17 antibodies onto the fiber surface through hydrogen bonding.

Marine organisms, especially top predators such as sharks, are susceptible to environmental pollutants like microplastics (MPs) and phthalate esters (PAEs), leading to ecosystem risks. Research on contamination in these apex species is, however, still limited. This study investigated MPs and PAEs in multiple shark species (Isurus oxyrinchus, Alopias superciliosus, Alopias pelagicus, Carcharhinus brevipinna, and Sphyrna zygaena) off Taiwan's eastern coast.
