Introduction: Cochlear implantation is an effective treatment for children with deafness. Although the binaural effect of bilateral cochlear implantation on sound localization and speech perception in noisy environments has been demonstrated, the outcome and performance predictors of the second cochlear implant (CI2) remain uncertain for patients receiving sequential implantation. This study evaluated the hearing performance between the first cochlear implant (CI1), CI2, and bilateral cochlear implants (CI1+2) among children with sequential bilateral cochlear implantation.

The most robust and economical method for laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) is to identify mycobacteria acid-fast bacilli (AFB) under acid-fast staining, despite its disadvantages of low sensitivity and labor intensity. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in TB-smear microscopy to assist medical technologists with routine AFB smear microscopy. In this study, we evaluated the performance of a TB automated system consisting of a microscopic scanner and recognition program powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a well-established, popular treatment choice for renal stones. Traditionally, the semi-liquid gel is used as a coupling medium in ESWL. During ESWL, body fluid or blood might transmit between the patients when the probe or gel used in the procedure is contaminated and cause potential nosocomial infections.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study developed a cross-domain deep learning course in vocational senior high schools using a SPOC (small private online course) format and a specific teaching model known as the Double Diamond 4D model.
  • - The research involved participatory action research and analyzed student learning effectiveness through a technology acceptance model, revealing positive impacts on students' understanding of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (AIoT) after a 16-week course.
  • - Findings suggest that the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode successfully enhances students' learning outcomes in AIoT, and recommendations are made for advancing this educational approach in the future.

Towards cultural landscapes of care.

Health Place

November 2022

National Kaohsiung Normal University, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Electronic address:

This paper sets out a theoretical agenda for Cultural Landscapes of Care. It highlights the importance of engaging the cultural vectors within different 'care-ful geographies', in order to highlight the role of culture as both a lens of knowing a meaningful way of life, and a critical hermeneutic. Through revisiting discussions around everyday practices of care, both in this journal and elsewhere, we outline a research agenda that re-engages culture with inquiries into the relations between place and care, including spatialities of care, ethics and justice.

June 2023

Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences; Graduate Institute of Audiology and Speech Therapy, National Kaohsiung Normal University.

Using a cross-modal picture-word interference (PWI) task, we examined phonological representations and encoding in Mandarin-speaking children and adults. Pictures of monosyllabic words were presented visually, with auditory primes presented before, concurrent with, or after the picture's appearance (SOA -200, -100, 0, +150). Primes were related to the targets in terms of Onset, Rhyme, Tone, Onset and Tone, Rhyme and Tone, or were unrelated.

A simple, rapid, and sensitive technique for measuring mirtazapine and its metabolites enantiomers in human fluids, such as urine and serum, was developed by applying ultrasound-enhanced and surfactant-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (USA-DLLME) integrated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC)-mediated stacking in capillary electrophoresis (CE). The parameters that affect extraction and stacking performance, such as the extraction volume, surfactant types, surfactant concentrations, salt additives, extraction time, solution pH, and background electrolytes, were comprehensively studied and optimized to achieve optimal detection performance. Under optimal extraction conditions (injection of 120 µL of CHCl into 1 mL of a sample solution containing 0.
