Background: The global shortage and maldistribution of health care workers, especially medical doctors, pose a significant threat to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goal 3 of ensuring well-being and healthy lives for all. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are disproportionately affected by this crisis, with a high rate of brain drain from rural to urban areas, as well as to high-income countries. Various retention strategies have been implemented in different settings and organizations.

Background: Postnatal care (PNC) in Malaysia is believed to have played a role in reducing maternal and child mortality. A pilot study was thereby conducted to estimate the cost of PNC in public primary care facilities in Negeri Sembilan from the perspective of healthcare providers.
Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design that involved six public primary care facilities in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.

Oxidative stress is one of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases. It has been reported that a secretory phospholipase A known as A2-EPTX-NSm1a has lower cytotoxicity in neuronal cells compared to its crude venom. In this study, A2-EPTX-NSm1a was tested for its neuroprotective activity on human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) differentiated into cholinergic neurons against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (HO).

Background: The popularity of mobile health (mHealth) applications (or apps) in the field of health and medical education is rapidly increasing, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to assess awareness, attitudes, practices, and factors associated with the mHealth app usage among medical students.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving medical students at a government university in Sarawak, Malaysia, from February to April 2021.

Among several vector control methods commonly used, environmental management is one of the control measures to mitigate dengue in such vulnerable communities. Since there is no curative treatment for dengue yet, targeted environmental and ecosystem management is increasingly relevant. Hence, this review was conducted to identify the effectiveness of environmental management intervention strategy to reduce dengue cases.

Silage produced in tropical countries is prone to spoilage because of high humidity and temperature. Therefore, determining indigenous bacteria as potential inoculants is important to improve silage quality. This study aimed to determine bacterial community and functional changes associated with ensiling using amplicon metagenomics and to predict potential bacterial additives associated with silage quality in the Malaysian climate.

Background: The standard for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis is RT-PCR from nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs. Major airports require COVID-19 screening, and saliva has the potential as a substitute specimen for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. We investigated the utility of fresh drooled saliva against NPS for COVID-19 screening of travelers.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the most common type of high-altitude sickness. The incidence of AMS varies by mountain location, trail characteristics, and study design. The lack of local epidemiology data has driven us to investigate the incidence and severity of AMS and its associated factors at Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia.

Introduction: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts (a type of white blood cell), red blood cells or platelets. Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) holds promise as a new agent that also could be efficacious in newly diagnosed AML with acceptable toxicity. This paper describes the design of a protocol to conduct a systematic review of published studies assessing GO for the treatment of AML.

This is the first record of phoretic histiostomatid mites found on a forensically important blow fly species, Chrysomya villeneuvi (Diptera: Calliphoridae), collected from decomposing rabbit carcasses placed in Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve, Sungai Buloh and MARDI Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The blow flies frequenting around the carcasses were first captured using an insect net. After pinning, they were examined under a stereomicroscope and mites phoretic on their body were carefully removed and preserved in 70% ethanol.

Quorum sensing (QS) is a term used to describe cell-to-cell communication that enables bacteria to orchestrate group behaviours according to density of bacterial cells. In Gram-negative bacteria, this signalling system is widely known to regulate a variety of different phenotypes such as antibiotic production and biofilm formation. In this study, we report the production of N-acyl homoserine lactones produced by Chromobacterium haemolyticum strain KM2, a bacterium isolated from a river water of a reserved tropical national park.
