Motivation: Enzymes are key targets to biosynthesize functional substances in metabolic engineering. Therefore, various machine learning models have been developed to predict Enzyme Commission (EC) numbers, one of the enzyme annotations. However, the previously reported models might predict the sequences with numerous consecutive identical amino acids, which are found within unannotated sequences, as enzymes.

Introduction: Insufficient evidence exists on the sex-specific associations of body mass index (BMI) and weight change through midlife with dementia incidence, especially in Asian populations.
Methods: For 37,414 Japanese residents aged 40 to 59 years, BMIs at baseline (year 1990 or 1993) and 10-year follow-ups were obtained. Weight changes between baseline and 10-year follow-ups were determined.

Myocardial damage caused by the newly emerged coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection is one of the key determinants of COVID-19 severity and mortality. SARS-CoV-2 entry to host cells is initiated by binding with its receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2, and the ACE2 abundance is thought to reflect the susceptibility to infection. Here, we report that ibudilast, which we previously identified as a potent inhibitor of protein complex between transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) 3 and NADPH oxidase (Nox) 2, attenuates the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein pseudovirus-evoked contractile and metabolic dysfunctions of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs).

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a group of respiratory disorders characterized by chronic inflammation and fibrosis of the pulmonary interstitial tissues. Although the etiology of ILD remains unclear, some drug treatments are among the primary causes of ILD. In the present study, we analyzed the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System and JMDC Inc.

A number of disease states, including type 2 diabetes (T2D), are associated with an increased risk of pulmonary infection. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are used to treat T2D and exert anti-inflammatory actions through a single, well-defined GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R). Although highly expressed in the lung, little is known about the role of the GLP-1R in the context of pulmonary inflammation.

We recently identified 17,18-epoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (17,18-EpETE) as a lipid metabolite endogenously generated from eicosapentaenoic acid that exhibits potent anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, chemically synthesized 17,18-EpETE is enantiomeric due to its epoxy group-17(),18()-EpETE and 17(),18()-EpETE.

Radiobiological research continues to focus on finding newer strategies for enhanced killing of tumor cells by ionizing radiation. In recent years, chemotherapeutic drugs have been found to possess the capabilities to sensitize tumor cells without affecting the normal cells. There have been increasing research efforts to identify novel and nontoxic compounds which cause minimal or no harm to normal cells but maximize tumor toxicity response to radiation exposure.

Adjuvants improve the potency of vaccines, but the modes of action (MOAs) of most adjuvants are largely unknown. TLR-dependent and -independent innate immune signaling through the adaptor molecule MyD88 has been shown to be pivotal to the effects of most adjuvants; however, MyD88's involvement in the TLR-independent MOAs of adjuvants is poorly understood. Here, using the T-dependent antigen NIPOVA and a unique particulate adjuvant called synthetic hemozoin (sHZ), we show that MyD88 is required for early GC formation and enhanced antibody class-switch recombination (CSR) in mice.

Crosstalk between the autonomic nervous system and the immune system by means of the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways is a critical process in host defence. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system results in the release of catecholamines as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY). Here, we investigated whether phagocytes are capable of the de novo production of NPY, as has been described for catecholamines.

DNA shape is emerging as an important determinant of transcription factor binding beyond just the DNA sequence. The only tool for large scale DNA shape estimates, DNAshape was derived from Monte-Carlo simulations and predicts four broad and static DNA shape features, Propeller twist, Helical twist, Minor groove width and Roll. The contributions of other shape features e.
