Objectives: The singular focus on self-identified race and ethnicity in health disparities research may not fully convey the individual and structural components of experiencing race in society, or in a racialized context such as prison. Processes of racialization create boundaries between incarcerated individuals and regulate their daily interactions and access to resources, with possible effects on well-being. However, the relationship between perceived race and health has not been examined within the imprisoned population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate a new mathematical model for measuring insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, as traditional methods are impractical for large-scale research.
  • The researchers used data from previous studies involving 130 obese youths to compare their model-derived indices against standard clamp measurements and other indices.
  • The findings indicated that the new model (mDI-woI) was more effective at detecting insulin resistance and prediabetes than traditional methods, suggesting it could serve as a cost-effective tool for large epidemiological studies.

April 2024

Laboratory of Biological Modeling, National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, United States.

Efficient and accurate methods to estimate insulin sensitivity () and β-cell function (BCF) are of great importance for studying the pathogenesis and treatment effectiveness of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Existing methods range in sensitivity, input data, and technical requirements. Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) are preferred because they are simpler and more physiological than intravenous methods.

Health equity is the aspirational assurance of optimal health for all. Synonymous with fair and just opportunities for physical and mental health, equity work reflects intentional efforts to remove access barriers and allocate high-quality, need-based resources. Health equity is not possible without meaningful reductions in disparities-and evaluating progress goes further to describe, assess, and continuously evaluate fairness and social justice within structures, community contexts, and healthcare.

Toward informatics-enabled preparedness for natural hazards to minimize health impacts of climate change.

J Am Med Inform Assoc

November 2022

Division of Biomedical Informatics, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, USA.

Natural hazards (NHs) associated with climate change have been increasing in frequency and intensity. These acute events impact humans both directly and through their effects on social and environmental determinants of health. Rather than relying on a fully reactive incident response disposition, it is crucial to ramp up preparedness initiatives for worsening case scenarios.

Visualizations form an important part of public health informatics (PHI) communications. Visualizing data facilitates discussion, aids understanding, makes patterns apparent, promotes analysis, and fosters recall. How rare are novel visualizations in the PHI literature? In Phase 1, we used a rapid review methodology to test the commonness of the Sankey diagram in the PHI theory literature via an automated text search for key terms.

The characteristics of a person's health status are often guided by how they live, grow, learn, their genetics, as well as their access to health care. Yet, all too often, studies examining the relationship between social determinants of health (behavioral, sociocultural, and physical environmental factors), the role of demographics, and health outcomes poorly represent these relationships, leading to misinterpretations, limited study reproducibility, and datasets with limited representativeness and secondary research use capacity. This is a profound hurdle in what questions can or cannot be rigorously studied about COVID-19.

COVID-19 Health Disparities and Adverse Social Determinants of Health.

Behav Med

April 2022

Office of the Director, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare and health outcomes are longstanding. The real-time emergence of COVID-19 disparities has heightened the public and scientific discourse about structural inequities contributing to the greater risk of morbidity and mortality among racial and ethnic minority populations and other underserved groups. A key aspect of assuring health equity is addressing social determinants that lead to adverse health outcomes among minoritized groups.

Background: Surgical axillary staging demonstrating positive nodal disease before neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) necessitates axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) post-NAC. Despite evidence supporting post-NAC surgical staging, we hypothesized that there is persistent use of pre-NAC staging and that it is associated with aggressive clinicopathologic features and a higher rate of subsequent ALND.

Patients And Methods: Stage I-III breast cancer patients who underwent lymph node staging surgery and received NAC between 2013 and 2017 in the National Cancer Database were included.

Psychosocial stress correlates with cardiovascular (CV) events; however, associations between physiologic measures of stressors and CVD remain incompletely understood, especially in racial/ethnic minority populations in resource-limited neighborhoods. We examined associations between chronic stress-related neural activity, measured by amygdalar Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake, and aortic vascular FDG uptake (arterial inflammation measure) in a community-based cohort. Forty participants from the Washington, DC CV Health and Needs Assessment (DC-CHNA), a study of a predominantly African-American population in resource-limited urban areas and 25 healthy volunteers underwent detailed phenotyping, including FDG PET/CT for assessing amygdalar activity (AmygA), vascular FDG uptake, and hematopoietic (leukopoietic) tissue activity.

No Populations Left Behind: Vaccine Hesitancy and Equitable Diffusion of Effective COVID-19 Vaccines.

J Gen Intern Med

July 2021

Office of the Director, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA.

Racial/ethnic minority communities are experiencing an undue burden from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and the availability of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized vaccines is critical for improving population health. National surveys assessing vaccination willingness and reports of vaccination administration by race/ethnicity indicate at least two areas that warrant attention: elevated vaccine hesitancy among African American and Latino adults, and the need to ensure equitable access to vaccination. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy is not uniform within racial/ethnic minority populations; yet, given the disproportionate impact, understandable distrust, and widespread misinformation, there is an imperative to overcome challenges associated with vaccination willingness and uptake, as well as implementation and access.

Recovery in Special Emphasis Populations.

Alcohol Res

July 2021

Center for Health Equity Research and NIMHD RCMI Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona.

Special emphasis populations in the current context can be defined as groups experiencing health disparities resulting in elevated risk to health, safety, and well-being from drinking alcohol. Individuals from marginalized minority populations often encounter barriers to accessing and receiving effective alcohol treatment due to social inequities and disadvantaged life contexts, which also may adversely affect recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD). Recovery from AUD often involves the adoption of a stable non-drinking lifestyle (sobriety), increased health and well-being, and increased social connection.
